The National Pavilion UAE – La Biennale di Venezia curates untold stories about the UAE’s arts and architecture and provides a high-profile platform for curatorial concepts that address critical international conversations from a distinctive local perspective. For each annual edition of the Art and Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, one of the world’s most significant and rigorous

cultural platforms, the National Pavilion UAE appoints and works with curators, artists and contributors to conceive, research and develop an exhibition and accompanying publication that advance and preserve understanding of the UAE’s cultural landscape. Since 2009, its exhibitions have explored the nation’s cultural evolution from 20th century experimental artists to the diverse contemporary scene. In 2019, the National Pavilion UAE presented an acclaimed installation exploring geographic and psychological displacement from filmmaker Nujoom Alghanem, and in 2021, architects and curators Wael Al Awar and Kenichi Teramoto will present research into an innovative sustainable cement alternative derived from salt and minerals found in the UAE’s Sabkha heritage sites. In parallel with its exhibitions in Venice, the National Pavilion UAE engages with communities in the UAE to support the growth of the local cultural and creative industries, through public programming and professional opportunities. Alongside an extensive pool of artists, curators, researchers and partners who have contributed to its exhibitions over the years, the UAE’s Venice Internship program has provided training and hands-on experience to more than 170 interns, many of whom are now working successfully in cultural fields. The National Pavilion UAE is an independent non-profit organisation, commissioned by the Salama bint Hamdan Al Nahyan Foundation and supported by the UAE Ministry of Culture and Youth. 2021 marks the UAE’s tenth participation in the International Exhibitions of La Biennale di Venezia since 2009.

One of the rituals recorded in “Naiman,” Jawad Al Malhi's oral history of Hammam Al Ayn in the Old City of Jerusalem, is that of a procession through the city by candlelight. Men carried lanterns through the streets, entered the mosque, and returned home together. It was a ritual known to those who lived it, preserved now only in the voices of those who were there.

“Washwasha” centers these intangible histories — the ones that exist only in the act of being spoken aloud.

إحدى الطقوس التي وثقها جواد المالحي في التاريخ الشفهي لعمله "نعيماً" حول حمام العين في مدينة القدس القديمة، كانت مسيرةً تعبر المدينة على ضوء الشموع؛ حيث يحمل الرجال الفوانيس عبر الأزقة، ويدخلون المسجد، ثم يعودون معًا إلى ديارهم. طقسٌ لم يعرفه إلا من عاشه، ولا يحيى اليوم إلا في أصوات من شهدوه.

The Biennale Arte 2026 theme “In Minor Keys” calls us to attend to what is quiet, communal, and often overlooked. In doing the same, Lamya Gargash’s “Majlis” series leads her to observe lived spaces at homes and the subtle traces left behind.

“This body of work stems from my project “Majlis,” a study of Emirati homes and the majlis, derived from the Arabic verb jalasa, to sit,” shares Lamya Gargash. “The majlis is a space rooted in unity and community, a place to gather, to celebrate, to grieve, and to simply be together. I am deeply drawn to how these spaces have evolved over time, branching into formal and informal settings, as well as spaces designated for men, women, or children. Despite these variations, the essence of camaraderie and connection remains constant.”

يدعونا شعار بينالي الفنون 2026 "في المقامات الصغرى" إلى الالتفات لكل ما هو هادئ، وجماعي، وغالبًا ما يُغفَل عنه. وتماشيًا مع هذا التوجه، تقود سلسلة "مجلس" للفنانة لمياء قرقاش إلى تأمل المساحات المعيشية والآثار الرقيقة الخفية التي تتركها الحياة خلفها هناك.

"ينبع هذا العمل الفني من مشروعي "مجلس"، وهو دراسة للمنازل الإماراتية والمجلس، المستمد اسمه من الفعل (جلس). فالمجلس مساحة متجذرة في الترابط والمجتمع؛ وهو مكان للاجتماع، والاحتفاء، والمواساة، وللتواجد معًا بكل بساطة. يشدّني بعمق كيف تطورت هذه المساحات بمرور الوقت، متفرعةً إلى أطر رسمية وغير رسمية، فضلًا عن كونها مساحات مخصصة للرجال، أو النساء، أو الأطفال. ورغم كل هذه التغيرات، يبقى جوهر الألفة والترابط الإنساني ثابتًا لا يتغير".

“In Minor Keys” asks us to slow down and listen to the whispers, the lower frequencies, the quiet details that often go unnoticed. Artist Mays Albaik reflects on what her practice finds in those overlooked places.

“The experience of displacement or belonging doesn't only appear in the big stories, but in very small details that seep into the body over time. Things we become unable to separate from ourselves. How we sit, how we turn, how we handle intimacy or caution. These things sometimes precede our ability to interpret them through words.

“This is why I return so often to the mouth, the voice, the breath, and to the attempt to turn something very fleeting into a material trace. Perhaps because I am interested in the idea that the body doesn't preserve memory perfectly or in a fixed way, but rather continuously reshapes it. For me, the body is not only a carrier of experience, but also a space in which memory itself changes over time, repetition, and living.”

"تجربة الاغتراب أو الانتماء لا تظهر فقط في الحكايات الكبرى، بل تتجلى في تفاصيل بالغة الصغر تتسلل إلى الجسد بمرور الوقت؛ تفاصيل نصبح عاجزين عن فصلها عن ذواتنا. طريقة جلوسنا، والتفاتنا، وكيفية تعاملنا مع الألفة أو الحذر. هذه الأشياء تسبق أحيانًا قدرتنا على تفسيرها بالكلمات.

"لهذا السبب، أعود مرارًا وتكرارًا إلى الفم، والصوت، والأنفاس، وإلى محاولة تحويل ما هو عابر وزائل إلى أثر مادي ملموس. ولعله يرجع إلى اهتمامي بفكرة أن الجسد لا يحفظ الذاكرة بشكل مثالي أو ثابت، بل يعيد تشكيلها باستمرار. فبالنسبة لي، الجسد ليس مجرد وعاء يحمل التجربة، بل هو مساحة تتغير فيها الذاكرة نفسها مع مرور الوقت، والتكرار، ومعايشة الحياة".

Train and work at the National Pavilion UAE during Biennale Architettura 2027 - the 20th International Architecture Exhibition, running from 8 May – 21 November 2027, curated by Wang Shu and Lu Wenyu.

Selected interns work across all facets of the pavilion, from exhibition operations and visitor engagement, to cultural diplomacy and professional development.

A glimpse into “And What Did You Say?”

Across eight showings, each approximately fifty minutes and shaped to the pavilion's setting, three performers embodied the life cycle of a rumour: Salvatore De Simone as the Source, where gossip begins; Rei Kassandra Co as the Spread, where it travels and changes form; and Anna Abalikhina as the Core, where it is metabolized and released. Audiences were engaged directly into the exchange through movement, costume, and unscripted interaction.

The work remains on view as an installation as part of “Washwasha” at the Sale d'Armi, Arsenale until 22 November 2026 — a bench housing the props, costumes, and objects used during the performance, and an audio journey of inner monologues and scripted conversations on the nature of gossip.

شهد الجناح الوطني لدولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة تقديم ثمانية عروض أدائية لعمل "وماذا قلت؟" للفنانة تاوس ماخاتشيفا، استغرق كل منها نحو خمسين دقيقة وشُكّلت لتتناغم مع مساحة الجناح.

وقد جسّد ثلاثة مؤدين مراحل مختلفة من النميمة: سلفاتوري دي سيمون كمصدر لها، وري كاساندرا كو كوسيلة انتشارها، وآنا أباليخينا كجوهرها؛ حيث بثّ كل منهم الحياة في هذه الأدوار من خلال تصميم الحركات الكوريغرافية، والأزياء، والتفاعل المباشر مع الجمهور.

ويستمر العمل في هيئة تركيب فني، يتمثل في مقعد يضم الأدوات والأزياء المستخدمة أثناء العرض، إلى جانب رحلة صوتية من المونولوجات الداخلية والمحادثات المكتوبة التي تتناول طبيعة النميمة. ويُعرض "وشوشة" في قاعة سالي دي آرمي، الأرسينالي، حتى 22 نوفمبر 2026.

In “The Curse” (2026), Farah Al Qasimi narrates the work through a diary, telling the story of a child who believes their scream brought a curse upon their village. But unfolding across the vignettes is something more intricate: a study of all the ways human beings signal, reach, and attend to one another across distance, ritual, and everyday life.

في عملها "اللعنة" (2026)، تسرد فرح القاسمي تفاصيل العمل من خلال مذكرات يومية، تروي فيها قصة طفل يعتقد أن صرخته قد جلبت لعنة على قريته. ولكن ما يتكشف لنا عبر هذه المشاهد هو أمر أكثر عمقًا وتعقيدًا؛ دراسة لكافة السبل التي يتواصل بها البشر، ويتقاربون، ويلتفتون لبعضهم البعض عبر المسافات، والطقوس، وتفاصيل الحياة اليومية.

“Washwasha” moves between speech and silence, presence and absence. Two works in the exhibition inhabit that threshold without sound.

In "Kuni Kai Akuna K**a Aqul! (Be, so that I may be as I say!)," Mays Albaik casts the inside of her mouth at the moment she attempts to speak. With her mouth full of alginate, Albaik captures the movement of the mouth as it forms the intended word, but is unable to produce any sound.

Through her photographic series, "Majlis," Lamya Gargash records a range of domestic hosting spaces, each one intentionally designed for gathering, listening, and belonging.

While both works embody silence, they reflect on the ways objects and spaces hold personal and collective memory.

يتنقل معرض "وشوشة" بين الكلام والصمت، والحضور والغياب؛ حيث يحلّ عملان فنيان في المعرض عند تلك العتبة الفاصلة بلا صوت.

في عمل "كُوني كي أكون كما أقول!"، تصنع ميس البيك قالبًا لجوف فمها في اللحظة التي تحاول فيها النطق. وبينما يمتلئ فمها بمادة الألجينات، تعجز البيك عن إصدار أي صوت، لكنها تلتقط بصمةً دائمة لحركة الفم وهو يتشكّل لنطق الكلمة المقصودة.

ومن خلال سلسلتها الفوتوغرافية "مجلس"، توثّق لمياء قرقاش مجموعة من فضاءات الضيافة المنزلية، صُمِّم كل منها بعناية ليكون مكانًا للتجمّع، والإنصات، والشعور بالانتماء.

ورغم أن العملين يجسّدان الصمت، فإنهما يتأملان الكيفية التي تحتفظ بها الأشياء والفضاءات بالذاكرة الشخصية والجماعية.

“Washwasha” participating artist Alaa Edris reflects on what she hopes visitors take away from “Wiswas” (2026), on view at the National Pavilion UAE.

“I’m not trying to deliver a single message, but to create a condition the viewer has to sit with. The work asks you to pay attention to what feels familiar but slightly off. If there is something to take away, it’s an awareness of how much we rely on structure, on beginnings, middles, and ends, on clear meaning, and how quickly that structure can collapse. The work reflects on the tension between our need to understand and the reality that not everything can be resolved. So my message, if anything, is to stay with that discomfort a bit longer than usual, and to notice what starts to shift when you do.”

تشارك الفنانة آلاء إدريس، المشارِكة في معرض "وشوشة"، رؤيتها حول ما تأمل أن يخرج به الزوار من تفاعلهم مع عملها الفني "وسواس" (2026) المعروض في الجناح الوطني لدولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة.

"لا أحاول تقديم رسالة أحادية، بل أسعى لخلق حالة يتعين على المشاهد أن يستغرق فيها ويتعايش معها. يدعوك العمل الفني إلى التمعن في الأشياء التي تبدو مألوفة للوهلة الأولى، لكنها تحمل في طياتها مسحة من الاختلال أو الغرابة. وإذا كان ثمة أثر أرجو للزائر أن يخرج به، فهو الوعي بمدى اعتمادنا على الأطر والهياكل؛ على البدايات والمنتصفات والنهايات، وعلى المعاني الواضحة، ومدى السرعة التي يمكن أن تنهار بها هذه الهياكل. فالعمل يجسد التوتر القائم بين حاجتنا الملحّة للفهم، والواقع الذي يثبت لنا أنه ليس كل شيء قابلًا للحل والتفسير. لذا فإن رسالتي، إن كان ثمة رسالة، هي أن نبقى مع هذا الشعور بعدم الارتياح لفترة أطول قليلًا من المعتاد، ونلاحظ ما الذي يبدأ في التبدل والتحول عندما نفعل ذلك."

The National Pavilion UAE welcomes the fourth group of Venice Interns, serving as guides and cultural ambassadors at the exhibition "Washwasha."

➡️ Shahed El Khatib is an architect and art practitioner based in the UAE. Her work brings together architecture, design, and art through creative projects.

➡️ Mariam Ali Al Shehhi is an Assistant Curator at DCT Abu Dhabi with a background in Art History and Archaeology. She has contributed to major public art initiatives, including Manar Abu Dhabi and the Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial.

➡️ Sara Almulla is a multidisciplinary designer. Her practice spans interactive media, visual storytelling, and experimental design.

➡️ Susanna Potapova (continuing) is a second-year Multimedia Arts student at IUAV University. She is passionate about shaping meaningful encounters between art and audiences.

➡️ Amelia Natali is a Master's student in Asian and African Languages for Business and International Cooperation, specializing in Arabic, with interests in the Arab world, international cooperation, and culture's role in fostering dialogue.

يرحب الجناح الوطني لدولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة بمجموعته الرابعة من متدربي برنامج البندقية، الذين يساهمون في توجيه الزوار كممثلين وسفراء ثقافيين في معرض "وشوشة."

⬅️ شهد الخطيب: مهندسة معمارية وممارسة فنية مقيمة في دولة الإمارات. يجمع عملها بين الهندسة المعمارية والتصميم والفن من خلال المشاريع الإبداعية.

⬅️ مريم علي الشحي: قيّم مفاهيمي مساعد في دائرة الثقافة والسياحة أبوظبي، حاصلة على خلفية أكاديمية في تاريخ الفن والآثار. ساهمت في مبادرات فنية عامة بارزة، من بينها منار أبوظبي وبينالي أبوظبي للفن العام.

⬅️ سارة الملا: مصممة متعددة التخصصات، تشمل ممارستها الفنية الإعلام التفاعلي، وسرد القصص بصريًا، والتصميم التجريبي.

⬅️ سوزانا بوتابوفا (مستمرة): طالبة في السنة الثانية تخصص فنون الوسائط المتعددة في جامعة إيواف. شغوفة بصياغة لقاءات ذات مغزى بين الفن والجمهور.
