The National Pavilion UAE – La Biennale di Venezia curates untold stories about the UAE’s arts and architecture and provides a high-profile platform for curatorial concepts that address critical international conversations from a distinctive local perspective. For each annual edition of the Art and Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, one of the world’s most significant and rigorous cultural platforms, the National Pavilion UAE appoints and works with curators, artists and contributors to conceive, research and develop an exhibition and accompanying publication that advance and preserve understanding of the UAE’s cultural landscape. Since 2009, its exhibitions have explored the nation’s cultural evolution from 20th century experimental artists to the diverse contemporary scene. In 2019, the National Pavilion UAE presented an acclaimed installation exploring geographic and psychological displacement from filmmaker Nujoom Alghanem, and in 2021, architects and curators Wael Al Awar and Kenichi Teramoto will present research into an innovative sustainable cement alternative derived from salt and minerals found in the UAE’s Sabkha heritage sites. In parallel with its exhibitions in Venice, the National Pavilion UAE engages with communities in the UAE to support the growth of the local cultural and creative industries, through public programming and professional opportunities. Alongside an extensive pool of artists, curators, researchers and partners who have contributed to its exhibitions over the years, the UAE’s Venice Internship program has provided training and hands-on experience to more than 170 interns, many of whom are now working successfully in cultural fields. The National Pavilion UAE is an independent non-profit organisation, commissioned by the Salama bint Hamdan Al Nahyan Foundation and supported by the UAE Ministry of Culture and Youth. 2021 marks the UAE’s tenth participation in the International Exhibitions of La Biennale di Venezia since 2009.

Across “Washwasha,” conversations emerge between works through shared approaches to memory and identity. Jawad Al Malhi’s “Naiman” (2008/2026) and Mays Albaik’s newly commissioned work, "Kūnī Kai Akūna Kamā Aqūl! (Be, so that I may be as I say!)" speak to one another through their engagement with oral histories. While each artist takes on a different approach, both consider how personal and collective memories can be held, passed on, and preserved through language.

Beyond their work at the National Pavilion UAE, the Venice Interns are immersed in the city itself, an experience built on cultural exchange between UAE and Italian participants alike.

This year, interns took part in a traditional glassmaking workshop, and visited the Peggy Guggenheim Museum, deepening their engagement with Venice's artistic and cultural heritage alongside their daily work at the pavilion.

"Washwasha" closes on 22 November 2026 - one month remains to visit the National Pavilion UAE's exhibition at the Biennale Arte 2026.

What do you hope people take away from your work? We asked the featured artists of “Washwasha” to reflect on this question, each offering a personal perspective shaped by their practice and process.

From questions of language and permanence, to the way sound and repetition shape memory, their reflections offer insight into the intentions behind the work, and an invitation for viewers to form their own understanding.

ما الذي تأمل أن يستنتجه الجمهور من عملك؟؛ سألنا فناني معرض "وشوشة" في الجناح الوطني لدولة الإمارات، ليشارك كل منهم رؤية شخصية نابعة من ممارسته وأسلوبه الفني.

بين تساؤلات اللغة والديمومة، وكيفية تشكيل الصوت والتكرار للذاكرة، تقدم تأملاتهم لمحة عن النوايا الكامنة وراء الأعمال، ودعوة للمشاهدين لبناء فهمهم الخاص.

In Jawad Al Malhi's "Naiman," storyteller Nayef Abu Mayyala recalls the hammam not just as a place to bathe, but as a place to gather. Men would sit together for hours, laughing, joking, and remembering old times, telling stories of Abu Zayd Al-Hilali, playing simple card games after the evening prayer, and staying up late into the night, especially during Ramadan. Uncle Abu Awad would bring them coffee and treat them with respect. "Today," Abu Mayyala reflects, "we miss those days. We truly miss them. Television and satellite dishes have distracted people. People no longer ask about each other like before."

"Washwasha" centers the intangible oral histories that make up the collective memories of historic places.

من خلال العمل الفني "نعيماً" للفنان جواد المالحي، يستحضر الراوي نايف أبو ميّالة ذكريات الحمام لا بوصفه مكاناً للاستحمام فحسب، بل مساحةً يلتقي فيها الرجال ويتشاركون تفاصيل حياتهم. كانوا يجتمعون لساعات، يتبادلون الضحكات والمزاح، ويتذكرون الأيام الماضية، ويروون سيرة أبي زيد الهلالي، ويلعبون ألعاب الورق البسيطة بعد صلاة العشاء، ويمتد بهم السهر حتى ساعات متأخرة من الليل، لا سيما في رمضان. وكان العم أبو عواد يقدّم لهم القهوة ويعاملهم بكل احترام.

ويقول أبو ميّالة مستذكراً تلك الأيام: "اليوم نفتقد تلك الأيام. نفتقدها حقاً". فقد شغلت أجهزة التلفزيون وأطباق استقبال القنوات الفضائية الناس، ولم يعد الناس يسألون عن بعضهم كما كانوا يفعلون من قبل.

يركز معرض "وشوشة" على التواريخ الشفهية غير الملموسة التي تشكل الذاكرة الجماعية للأماكن التاريخية.

For "The Agriculture School: Corpus Memoria," artist Moza Almatrooshi extends her landscape-to-table practice and culinary studio, "ballad," into a sound work that moves through the Hajar Mountains in the UAE, tracing a path between Wadi Qfair, Wadi Al Milh, and the Alreem Plant Nursery, home to Iraqi botanist Dr. Karima Al-Haidari.

The recording layers a guided walk built from reversed speech, a conversation with Dr. Al-Haidari on endangered flora, a solo foraging hike, a register of bees drawn from a moving apiary, and a recording of members of the Dhuhoori tribe singing about a girl named “Moza.”

Taking its cue from Salem Obaid Alaleeli’s Ajman Radio segment "Voice of the Country," Almatrooshi attaches a hot mic to her body as she moves through the landscape, capturing her encounters with the land in real time. "Voice of the Country," a programmatic activation within "Washwasha," honors veteran broadcaster Salem Obaid Alaleeli and the founding of Ajman Radio in 1961.

في عملها الفني "مدرسة الزراعة: أرشيف الذاكرة"، تتوسع الفنانة موزة المطروشي في ممارستها الفنية التي تربط بين الطبيعة والمائدة وكذلك استوديو الطهي الخاص بها "بلد"، لتأخذنا في رحلة صوتية عبر جبال الحجر في دولة الإمارات، مقتفية أثرًا يربط بين وادي قفير، ووادي الملح، ومشاتل الريم، موطن خبيرة النباتات العراقية الدكتورة كريمة الحيدري.

يجمع التسجيل الصوتي بين جولات سير موجهة تعتمد على تسجيلات صوتية معكوسة، وحوار مع الدكتورة الحيدري حول النباتات المهددة بالانقراض، ورحلة فردية لجمع النباتات البرية، إلى جانب أصوات النحل من منحلة متحركة، وتسجيل صوتي لأفراد من قبيلة الظهوري يغنون عن فتاة تدعى "موزة".

واستلهامًا من فقرة "صوت البلد" التي كان يقدمها سالم عبيد العليلي عبر إذاعة عجمان، تضع المطروشي ميكروفون على جسدها أثناء تنقلها في الطبيعة، لتلتقط إيقاع البحث، والتوقف، والتفاعل في اللحظة ذاتها. ويأتي برنامج "صوت البلد"، أحد البرامج المصاحبة لمعرض "وشوشة"، ليكرّم الإعلامي المخضرم سالم عبيد العليلي وتأسيس إذاعة عجمان عام 1961.

"Between Us Is Green" is Roudhah Al Mazrouei's response to learning about the history of Ajman Radio and its segment, "Voice of the Country." In this excerpt, she recalls a moment with her father, who walked her through the different types of berries that grow in the UAE, explaining the process of growing tissue culture across different breeds.

Together, they tasted the different types, and Al Mazrouei found her favorite along the way. She describes the moment as one that brought her back to childhood, to that particular feeling of wonder and curiosity that comes with learning something for the very first time.

"Voice of the Country," a programmatic activation within "Washwasha," honors veteran broadcaster Salem Obaid Alaleeli and the founding of Ajman Radio in 1961.

يأتي عمل "بيننا أخضر" كاستجابة من الفنانة روضة المزروعي لاكتشافها تاريخ "إذاعة عجمان" وبرنامجها الشهير "صوت البلد". وفي هذا المقتطف، تستحضر الفنانة ذكرياتها مع والدها، حين اصطحبها لاستكشاف أنواع التوت المختلفة التي تنمو في دولة الإمارات، شارحًا لها عملية زراعة الأنسجة عبر سلالات متنوعة.

وتذوّقا معًا تلك الأنواع المختلفة حتى اكتشفت المزروعي نوعها المفضل. تصف هذه اللحظة بأنها أعادتها إلى أيام الطفولة، وإلى ذلك الشعور الخاص بالدهشة والشغف الذي يرافق معرفة شيء ما للمرة الأولى على الإطلاق.

ويأتي برنامج "صوت البلد"، ضمن الفعاليات المرافقة لمعرض "وشوشة"، ليكرّم الإعلامي المخضرم سالم عبيد العليلي وتأسيس إذاعة عجمان عام 1961.

The Venice Internship Program is a cultural exchange as much as an experience. Interns from the UAE and Italian students from Ca' Foscari University and IUAV work side-by-side at the National Pavilion UAE through its participation at the International Art and Architecture Exhibitions of La Biennale di Venezia, each gaining something meaningful from the other.
