Care does not end when an operation is complete.
Today is the programme’s planned discharge day. Patients are expected to return home following clinical assessment, with one-week follow-up appointments scheduled.
As the hospital-based programme draws towards its close, we thank , our medical volunteers and the families accompanying patients through each stage.
From assessment and preparation to surgery and follow-up, this programme is about more than a single moment. It reflects the importance of coordinated care and continued attention to patients’ needs. Thank you to our supporters for standing alongside this work.

Today’s focus is preparation for the days ahead.
Patients selected for surgery are scheduled to attend laboratory testing today, ahead of the surgical programme at .
Operations are planned for 10 and 11 October, with capacity for up to 18 surgeries, subject to clinical eligibility. This will be Operation Smile UAE’s 19th cleft surgical programme overall.
As we approach the operating days, we thank the medical volunteers and hospital teams preparing to care for patients. Our thoughts are also with the families making arrangements to accompany and support their loved ones.

Before a surgical programme begins, there is time dedicated to preparation.
Our October schedule includes a team leaders’ meeting and a whole-team meeting, bringing medical volunteers together ahead of the programme to discuss important updates in our global medical standards, policies and procedures.
These preparations reflect the collaborative effort behind patient care. Medical professionals from hospitals across the UAE are contributing their time and expertise, supported by the team at .

“Growing in Unity” begins with supporting one another.
During the UAE’s Year of Family 2026, we recognise the parents, guardians and relatives who accompany patients through assessments, treatment decisions and follow-up care.
For our October programme with , family support is an important part of the story—not simply a detail alongside surgery.
Our community also includes medical volunteers, hospital teams, donors and supporters who share a commitment to compassionate care.

One partnership. A 10th programme. A shared commitment to care.
This October, is set to host its 10th Operation Smile UAE surgical programme.
Our first hospital partner, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi has worked alongside us since 2017. Across the nine previous programmes at the hospital, more than 400 patients were screened and 140 received cleft surgery.
“We are so grateful for the amazing support we have received from Cleveland Clinic since 2017,” said Morag Cromey-Hawke, Executive Director of Operation Smile UAE.

Today is screening day—a day dedicated to understanding individual needs.
Approximately 80 patients, accompanied by their families, are expected to meet our multidisciplinary team for comprehensive assessments.
While the upcoming surgical programme has capacity for up to 18 surgeries, decisions will depend on screening and clinical eligibility. The importance of today extends beyond surgical selection: careful assessment is a meaningful part of patient care.

Care begins with listening.
Tomorrow, approximately 80 patients residing in the UAE are expected to attend screening, each accompanied by family. Many are babies and young children whose families will meet our multidisciplinary team for a comprehensive assessment.
Screening is an important opportunity to understand each patient’s needs and assess the care that may be appropriate for them. It is not a promise of surgery: clinical assessment guides decisions.
As we prepare for the programme with , we thank the medical volunteers and supporters helping make this day possible. Every patient deserves thoughtful, individual attention.

15 years of care, made possible together.
Since Operation Smile UAE was established in 2011, we have enabled surgery for more than 4,000 patients in the UAE and internationally. Behind that milestone is a shared commitment from medical volunteers, partners, donors and supporters to help more people access the care they deserve.
As we mark our 15th anniversary, we recognise the vision of our patron, H.H. Sheikha Aljazia bint Saif Al Nahyan, and everyone who has supported this work.

It takes the whole Operation Smile family! 💙
They say it takes a village… and behind our Charity Book Sale was a team that gave long hours, boundless care and plenty of heart.

Meet the people who helped bring it all together:

Morag - Executive Director
Organized the permits and passes, work orders and documentation. Checked and balanced the tills every night and kept the books tidy.

Njoki — Community Volunteer Coordinator
Organized more than 395 volunteers and encouraged everyone to save their plastic water bottles for recycling. Caring for our community and our environment!

Kyla — Programs Coordinator
Stepped into a different role to support our 18 cashiers, help with loading in and out, and ran the information desk.

Henry — Student Programs Coordinator
Helped bring together 52 student volunteers — our biggest student turnout at a book sale yet! Thank you for nurturing that spirit of giving.

Jimmy - Office Coordinator
Organized equipment and books, trained volunteers to sew cloth bags, and organized our second book sale area. So much thoughtful work behind the scenes!

Chelsea - Sponsorships coordinator
Made sure we had material to share on social media, helping our wider community be part of the celebration.

Nisha - Patient Coordinator
Added the new patients we met to our patient list — keeping the people at the heart of our work firmly in focus.
