421 is an independent, anti-disciplinary platform dedicated to emerging artists and creative practitioners in the UAE and across the region. A site for research, learning and experimentation, 421 provides a nurturing environment for emergent creative practices and those who want to harness the arts as an agent for social inquiry and transformation. 421 encourages practitioners to explore the poten

tial of public spaces as a means for progress and community engagement through a wide-ranging programmatic model that facilitates artistic exchange and critical dialogue. Located in Abu Dhabi’s Mina Zayed, 421 presents a year-round program of exhibitions, talks, workshops, special events and educational initiatives that offer accessible learning opportunities to the wider community and the general public. Many of the 421 programs are organized in collaboration with local, regional and international partners, engaging children, students, educators, and creative professionals in a participatory approach to artistic and creative practice. These programs are designed to develop artistic and creative skills, supporting the growth of the UAE’s creative ecosystem.

Meet the artist behind our upcoming exhibition ‘Human in the Loop’!

Dr. Ahmad AlAttar is a robotics engineer and artist based in Dubai whose practice moves between engineering and artistic experimentation. His work explores how emerging technologies, particularly robotics and interactive installations, can reinterpret heritage, memory, and identity.

He leads advanced robotics research at Dubai Future Labs and he's also the founder of REALIITY, an Emirati Art + Tech startup creating immersive installations that blend robotics with cultural storytelling.

‘Human in the Loop’ is his first institutional solo exhibition, developed through 421's Artistic Development Program.

الدكتور أحمد العطّار مهندس روبوتات وفنان مقيم في دبي، تتنقّل ممارسته بين الهندسة والتجريب الفني، ويستكشف في أعماله كيف يمكن للتقنيات الناشئة، ولا سيما الروبوتات والأعمال التركيبية التفاعلية، أن تعيد تأويل التراث والذاكرة والهوية.

يقود أبحاثاً متقدمة في مجال الروبوتات في "مختبرات دبي للمستقبل"، وهو أيضاً مؤسس "رياليتي"، وهي شركة إماراتية ناشئة تعمل في مجالات الفن والتكنولوجيا، وتطوّر أعمالاً تركيبية غامرة تمزج بين الروبوتات والسرد الثقافي.

يمثّل "في الحلقة" أول معرض فردي مؤسسي له، وقد طُوّر من خلال برنامج 421 للتطوير الفني.

We are pleased to announce the opening of ‘Human in the Loop' a sound-based interactive installation by Dr. Ahmad AlAttar.

It's time for a new kind of hide and seek.

Enter the gallery and become part of a game between you and an unseen algorithm. Move through a field of hanging ropes, follow the sound, and find the pattern.

The work draws from a concept in robotics where systems depend on human input to function. Are robots becoming more human? That’s for you to decide.

Dr. AlAttar is a participant of 421's Artistic Development Program, a program supporting early-career artists toward their first institutional solo exhibition.

Step inside ‘Ghosts of Arrival’, curated by Nadine Khalil as part of our ongoing exhibition ‘Rays, Ripples, Residue’.

As we move through this chapter of the exhibition, we offer a closer look at some of the artworks and themes on view.

‘Ghosts of Arrival’ reflects on what it means to enter the UAE’s art scene after the experimental surge of the early to mid-2010s: a time of improvised, off-the-grid cultural production that now feels irretrievable and almost mythic. This chapter considers what remains from that formative moment, and how it continues to shape the ways art is made, experienced, and shared today.

Featuring works by Tarek Al-Ghoussein, Mona Ayyash and Nadine Ghandour, Lucinda Childs, Maria Daher, Sarah Daher, and Cristalina Parra, Bait Juma, Hashel Lamki, Sara Naim, and Isaac Sullivan.

ادخلوا إلى عالم "أشباح الوصول"، من تقييم نادين خليل وذلك ضمن معرضنا المستمر "في السنا والموج وما بقى".

وأثناء تنقّلنا عبر هذا الفصل من المعرض، نمنحكم نظرة أقرب إلى بعض الأعمال والثيمات المعروضة.

يتأمل "أشباح الوصول" معنى الدخول إلى مشهد الفنون في دولة الإمارات عقب موجة التجريب التي اتسمت بها أوائل ومنتصف العقد الثاني من الألفية الثالثة؛ تلك الفترة التي شهدت إنتاجاً ثقافياً ارتجالياً خارج الأطر المؤسسية، ويبدو اليوم عصيّاً على الاستعادة، بل يكاد يكتسب طابعاً أسطورياً. يتوقف هذا الفصل عند ما تبقّى من تلك اللحظة التأسيسية، وكيف ما يزال أثرها ممتداً في أساليب إنتاج الفن وتلقّيه وتداوله حتى يومنا هذا.

Join us for Noor’s Heroes™, a family-friendly storytime and studio session where storytelling meets making! 📖🎨

Gather with us for a live reading by author Myrna Ayad, as we explore the life and legacy of pioneering Lebanese artist Saloua Raouda Choucair whose work reimagined abstraction through geometry, form, and modular structures.

Following storytime, artist Hana El-Sagini will lead a hands-on tactile studio session inspired by Choucair’s artistic language, where families and their little ones can experiment with color and form through painting and clay.

Designed as an intergenerational experience, this session invites parents and children to be creative, whilst learning and making together.

شاركونا جلسة قراءة حيّة مع الكاتبة ميرنا عياد، نستكشف خلالها حياة وإرث الفنانة اللبنانية الرائدة سلوى روضة شقير، التي أعادت تخيّل الفن التجريدي عبر الهندسة، والشكل، والبنى التركيبية المتكرّرة.

وعقب رواية القصص، ننتقل إلى ورشة عملية حسّية بإشراف الفنانة هنا السجيني داخل الاستوديو، مستوحاة من اللغة الفنية لشقير، حيث يمكن للعائلات وأطفالهم اختبار اللون والشكل من خلال الرسم واللعب بالطين.

صمّمت هذه الجلسة كتجربة تجمع بين الأجيال، إذ تدعو الأهالي والأطفال إلى الإبداع والتعلّم والابتكار معاً.

Where does performance begin, and where does it end? 📚💭

Join us for ‘Maktaba: A Speculative Thought Circle’, a monthly gathering for collective reading, viewing, and discussion across disciplines.

For this edition, multidisciplinary and performance artist Yoonsik Chico Park joins as an interlocutor, guiding a session focused on performance studies. Together, we’ll explore how performance moves across boundaries, between art forms, between art and everyday life, and how it can be understood as a durational way of being.

Through selected texts and references shared in advance, participants are invited to read, annotate, and bring their own perspectives into the conversation.

Join us for ‘Can Raisins be Used to Marinate Fish and Meat?’, an assemblage-making session with multidisciplinary artist Richi Bhatia, where food, memory, and making come together in unexpected ways 🍇🐟🥩

Working in dialogue with the book ‘Apricots on the Nile: A Memoir with Recipes’ by Colette Rossant, this session invites you to explore the mythologies, cultural rituals, and sensory experiences tied to food and ecology. Through guided prompts, you’ll create your own assemblage or tablescape by transforming everyday objects into layered, sculptural stories.

Along the way, we’ll reflect on marketplaces, particularly fish and meat markets, as spaces of exchange and performance, drawing connections between personal memory, public life, and the narratives that shape how we gather, cook, and share.

We’ll close by sharing our creations and the stories behind them.

No prior experience required.

انطلاقاً من كتاب "مشمش على ضفاف النيل: مذكّرات مع وصفات" لكوليت روسان، تدعوكم هذه الجلسة إلى استكشاف الأساطير، والطقوس الثقافية، والتجارب الحسيّة المرتبطة بالطعام والبيئة، ومن خلال إرشادات موجّهة، ستبتكرون أعمالكم التجميعية أو موائدكم الفنية الخاصة، عبر تحويل أشياء يومية إلى حكايات نحتية متراكبة.

وخلال الورشة، سنتأمل الأسواق، ولا سيما أسواق السمك واللحوم، بوصفها مساحات للتبادل والأداء، مستحضرين الروابط بين الذاكرة الشخصية، والحياة العامة، والسرديات التي تصوغ لحظات اللقاء، وطقوس الطهو، وتقاسم الطعام.

Commissioned by 421 Arts Campus.

A collaborative installation reflecting on memory, labour, and belonging, the work honors Romulo “Romy” Miclat, the Filipino artist behind Modesh, the mascot of Dubai Summer Surprises.

At its core is a series of takeaway postcards by Filipino creatives living and working across the UAE, each responding to the question: “What is a Dubai Summer Surprise for you?” Paired with a commissioned text, the project brings together personal and collective reflections on moments of joy, distance, care, and home.

The work foregrounds voices often left unseen, reclaiming visibility for those whose labour shapes the UAE’s cultural landscape.

Featuring contributions by Jandri Angelo Aguilor, Farah Fawzi Ali, Preschelle Ann Bigueras, Anna Bernice delos Reyes, Alexandra Chaves, Niño Consorte, John Gatapia, Balaram Ochangco, Augustine Paredes, Nicolas Roa.

بتكليف من مجمّع 421 للفنون.

عمل تركيبي تعاوني يتأمّل الذاكرة والعمل والانتماء، ويستحضر ذكرى وإرث الفنان الفلبيني الراحل رومولو "رومي" ميكلات، مبتكر شخصية "مدهش"، تميمة مهرجان مفاجآت صيف دبي.

في قلب العمل، سلسلة من البطاقات البريدية التي يمكن للزوار اقتناؤها، أنجزها مبدعون فلبينيون يعيشون ويعملون في أنحاء دولة الإمارات، يجيب كل منهم عن سؤال: "ما تعنيه مفاجآت صيف دبي بالنسبة لك؟" إلى جانب نصّ بتكليف خاص، يجمع المشروع بين تأملات شخصية وجماعية حول الفرح، والمسافة، والرعاية، والانتماء.

يستحضر العمل أصواتاً غالباً ما تبقى في الظلّ، ويعيد إبراز حضور أولئك الذين يسهم عملهم في تشكيل المشهد الثقافي في دولة الإمارات.
