421 is an independent, anti-disciplinary platform dedicated to emerging artists and creative practitioners in the UAE and across the region. A site for research, learning and experimentation, 421 provides a nurturing environment for emergent creative practices and those who want to harness the arts as an agent for social inquiry and transformation. 421 encourages practitioners to explore the poten

tial of public spaces as a means for progress and community engagement through a wide-ranging programmatic model that facilitates artistic exchange and critical dialogue. Located in Abu Dhabi’s Mina Zayed, 421 presents a year-round program of exhibitions, talks, workshops, special events and educational initiatives that offer accessible learning opportunities to the wider community and the general public. Many of the 421 programs are organized in collaboration with local, regional and international partners, engaging children, students, educators, and creative professionals in a participatory approach to artistic and creative practice. These programs are designed to develop artistic and creative skills, supporting the growth of the UAE’s creative ecosystem.

It’s time to get a grip!

Here’s what a handful of an artist studio looks like.

And you can look forward to more at The Public Studio. We’ve got our zones, four artists, and a day of fun and creative experimentation! 🧑‍🎨

Join us for The Public Studio where experienced artists will share their passion for their unique artistic expression.

Paint your own motifs onto pre-fired clay tiles with Parneet Pahwa. Learn the petal fold from Arnold Barretto and build a zine from found materials and letter stamps. Grab a linocut stamp from Nagham Hammoush and print it onto a tote bag, a t-shirt, or anything else you want to upcycle. Sit down with Sumayya Sideek, Zoe Cusi, and Nada Almosa from The Memo Club to build a Creative Survival Kit that will keep you inspired after the day ends.

Try something new, get your hands messy, and walk away with artwork you made yourself.

No experience required, just curiosity.

ارسموا نقوشكم الخاصة على بلاطات طينية سبق حرقها مع بارنيت باهوا، وتعلّموا مع أرنولد باريتو تقنية طيّ البتلات، ثم اصنعوا منشوراً فنياً مستقلاً باستخدام مواد معاد توظيفها وأختام الأحرف، ، واختاروا مع نغم حمّوش ختماً محفوراً على اللينوليوم واطبعوه على حقيبة قماشية، أو قميص، أو أي قطعة أخرى تودّون منحها حياة جديدة، ثم اجلسوا مع سمية صديق، وزوي كوزي، وندى الموسى من نادي ميمو لصنع عدّة النجاة الإبداعية التي ستبقي جذوة إلهامكم حيّة حتى بعد انتهاء اليوم.

جرّبوا شيئاً جديداً، وانغمسوا في متعة الابتكار التطبيقي، لتغادروا بقطعة فنية فريدة صاغتها أناملكم.

Step into Roudha Al Mazrouei's studio at 421, where she let go of perfectionism and embraced creative play. ⁠

When she discovered oil sticks, it changed everything and her personal visual language showed up on the canvas.⁠
⁠
Although she’s primarily a painter, she has also worked in printmaking and video. What unites these different mediums is her subject matter: Her work pulls from her culture and everyday life, reshaping them again and again in her art.⁠

For Roudha, the impact of 421's Artist Residency Program went beyond studio time. From studio visits with personal heroes to deep brainstorming sessions, she’s used her time to move her artmaking forward.⁠

ادخلوا إلى استوديو روضة المزروعي في 421، حيث تخلّت عن سعيها وراء الكمال، واحتضنت عفوية المرح الإبداعي.⁠

ومع اكتشافها لأقلام الزيت، تغيّر الكثير في ممارستها، وبدأت لغتها البصرية الخاصة تتجلّى على القماش.⁠
وعلى الرغم من أن الرسم يشكّل جوهر ممارستها، فقد عملت روضة أيضاً في الطباعة الفنية والفيديو، وما يجمع بين هذه الوسائط المختلفة هو الموضوع الذي تنطلق منه أعمالها، إذ تستمد مادتها من ثقافتها وحياتها اليومية، ثم تعيد صياغتها مراراً في أعمالها الفنية. وتنسجم هذه المقاربة مع ممارستها متعددة التخصصات، التي تمتد بين الرسم والطباعة الفنية وصناعة الأفلام وغيرها من الوسائط.⁠

أما أثر برنامج الإقامة الفنية في 421، فلم يقتصر بالنسبة إلى روضة على ما أتاحه لها من وقت ومساحة للعمل في الاستوديو. فمن زيارات الاستوديو مع فنانين لطالما ألهموها، إلى جلسات مطوّلة لتبادل الأفكار، استثمرت فترة إقامتها في دفع ممارستها الفنية إلى الأمام، ويأتي ذلك منسجماً مع ما يتيحه برنامج الإقامة من مساحة مخصصة للتجريب، إلى جانب زيارات الاستوديو والجلسات النقدية وغيرها من أشكال الدعم.⁠

We’ve got a packed schedule filled with hands-on sessions, with plenty of opportunities to make art and meet other creatives.

Two Odd has two special events planned: a studio seminar on Food Styling and Spatial Design, and The Shared Table, a community dining experience.

Join us for our upcoming Public Studio, a day dedicated to creativity and the opportunity to explore different artistic practices!

Drop into the different zones, learn from experienced artists, and get hands-on with their practices.

Paint pre-fired clay tiles with Parneet Pahwa. Learn the petal fold with Arnold Barretto and build a zine from found materials and letter stamps. Roll pre-carved linocut stamps inspired by Mesopotamian motifs with Nagham Hammoush, onto paper, tote bags, and t-shirts. Assemble a Creative Survival Kit with The Memo Club where you’ll make stamps, postcards, and scrapbooks.

The best part? Leave with your own unique creations from each zone, and shop original works by each artist as part of our Dukkan takeover!

Artist and researcher Ali Talaat opens up his space and his process in this studio visit.⁠

"I can be the criticizer, the beautifier, the self doubter, and I can be the proactive. Suddenly I'm five different versions of myself. That's been my relationship to the studio." For Ali, the studio holds all of the versions at once. ⁠
⁠
Community is essential to his practice, and since starting his residency at 421, he says what's shifted isn't the room or the time. It's the number of people who've passed through it, in workshops, talks, and one-on-ones.⁠

With the help of our children's audio guide, families can turn our current exhibition, 'Human in the Loop', into a fun game of hide and seek.

You can wander, pull on the ropes, and listen closely as glitching sounds grow louder or softer, guiding you toward a hidden spot somewhere in the space.
