Mubadala has been a key partner of the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund since 2021, helping to advance species and ecosystem conservation projects across Colombia, Guinea, Indonesia, Thailand and Canada.

To celebrate a second round of projects supported through this collaboration, we wanted to do something a little different, combining learning with a bit of fun.

Test your memory with our Memory Muddle game by accessing the link in our bio. Simply flip over two MBZ Fund tiles at a time and try to find the matching project pairs. Every successful match unlocks a fascinating fact about one of the conservation initiatives supported by Mubadala, offering a glimpse into the remarkable work being carried out by conservationists in the field.

Together with Mubadala and our passionate local conservation partners, we are helping to turn the tide against the extinction crisis and create a more positive future for biodiversity.

With a grant from the MBZ Fund, the Cook Islands Natural Heritage Trust aims to conserve and expand the critically endangered Cyrtandra rarotongensis, with only a few known individuals left, by enhancing detection, propagation, and outplanting efforts. We focus on the Avana catchment, home to two of the three known existing wild individuals.

With help from plant specialist John Game, they successfully germinated hundreds of C. rarotongensis from the first fruits they encountered. Their nursery trials showed that a method combining consistent moisture, shade, and coir layers achieves high germination rates.

Recently, they out planted the first 11 individuals and are monitoring their growth and health, hoping to identify the factors limiting the species’ recruitment and why it has become so rare. This involves monitoring both wild and newly planted individuals, assessing plant health, animal interactions, and environmental threats. They also use geospatial prospecting to identify potential habitats for undiscovered plants.

During their research, they observed a surprising interaction via a motion-sensor camera: a banded Kākerōri, a banded Rarotongan flycatcher, a formerly critically endangered species, hunting near the only known fruiting C. rarotongensis, named Varima-te-takere after the Cook Islands goddess of beginnings.

In 2010, the MBZ Fund awarded a $20,000 grant to a young conservationist from Ghana named Caleb Ofori-Boateng.

The funding supported the first nationwide survey of the Critically Endangered Togo Slippery Frog, launching a journey that would help shape amphibian conservation in Ghana and across West Africa.

Over the next 15 years, Caleb secured additional support through the Fund and went on to discover previously undescribed species, rediscover amphibian populations thought to be extinct, and become one of Africa’s leading amphibian conservationists.

Today, Dr Caleb Ofori-Boateng is the Founder and CEO of H**p Conservation Ghana, leading groundbreaking work in research, conservation, community engagement, and environmental policy.

We are proud to have been part of Caleb’s journey and to have provided direct support at a critical stage in his career.

His story is a reminder that investing in people can create lasting impact for species, ecosystems, and conservation worldwide.

Caleb is one of more than 11,000 conservationists, scientists, researchers, and volunteers supported by the Fund.

Partnerships are at the heart of effective conservation.

As the global community gathers for the Eighth GEF Assembly in Samarkand, we are proud to reaffirm our partnership with the Global Environment Facility (GEF), helping ensure that emerging conservationists in developing countries have the resources they need to protect species and ecosystems where support is needed most.

On World Environment Day, we congratulate the GEF on its continued leadership in biodiversity conservation, including the recent approval of US$232.5 million in new projects that will help advance global environmental goals and support action where it is needed most.

As part of this shared commitment, we are pleased to announce the expansion of our partnership. What began as an annual contribution of US$500,000 has now doubled to US$1 million in 2026, a significant investment in direct, timely support for conservationists working on the frontlines of biodiversity protection.

Together, we have supported more than 145 projects across 46 developing countries through the Fonseca Leadership Program, helping safeguard species and ecosystems while empowering local conservation leaders. Notably, 40% of these initiatives are led by women, highlighting the critical role they play in shaping a more sustainable future.
As pressures on nature continue to grow, partnerships like this enable us to act with greater scale, speed, and impact.

We wish all participants a successful Eighth GEF Assembly and Fonseca Leadership Program workshop and look forward to continuing our shared commitment to a nature-positive future.

For 17 years, the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund has stood beside conservationists around the world, supporting those working tirelessly to protect our planet’s most threatened species. But sometimes the roles are reversed, and in moments like these, your words of encouragement and solidarity truly mean the world to us and to the UAE.

The messages, contributed by a few, reflect the collective voice of our global community of grant recipients, strategic partners, conservation allies, suppliers, stakeholders, affiliates, and friends. It is a powerful reminder that conservation is built on connection, shared purpose, and people coming together in support of something greater than themselves.

Conservation is never the work of one person or one organisation. It grows through partnerships, shared knowledge, creativity, and people who care enough to take action where they are.

This International Day for Biological Diversity, we’re celebrating the researchers, young leaders, storytellers, conservationists, and communities helping shape a future where people and nature can thrive together.

From species conservation and youth empowerment to preserving traditional knowledge and supporting local action, every effort matters. Because meaningful global change starts with people willing to make a difference close to home.

We all have a part to play in making the world a better place, no matter how small the action. We can move the needle even further when we connect corporate funding to conservation action and then find meaningful ways to share those stories.

In the latest episode of Conservation Calls, we explore how it all comes together. Through the UAE Local Leaders Grants, we support conservationists making a real impact here in the UAE, while the young creatives from our Youth Grant for Nature (Saeed AlMheiri and Nazmin Rasheed) bring those stories to life in their own creative and authentic way. However, this collaboration wouldn’t have been possible without corporate support, especially Mubadala and The Atlantis Atlas Project.

Tune in through the link in ’s bio as our Repton podcast crew explores how it all connects, and why even the smallest actions can create a lasting impact.

A grant from the MBZ Fund supported PhD candidate Theodore Brook from the Department of Life Sciences at Imperial College London and Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in conducting invaluable research on the Small-leaved Currant Bush (Coprosma inopinata). This fieldwork, in collaboration with local partners including renowned naturalist Ian Hutton, took place on Lord Howe Island, a remote oceanic island in the South Pacific, known for its remarkable diversity of endemic flora including the Small-leaved Currant Bush.

This small shrub belongs to the coffee family (Rubiaceae) and only grows on a remote ridge on Mount Gower, located in the southern part of the island. During this field trip, Theodore and the team collected samples for molecular analyses, assessed the species’ conservation risk, and collected seeds for ex situ conservation. In addition to focusing on C. inopinata, they investigated other Coprosma species on the island and formally identified two new endemic species within this genus.

Great work Theodore, we are proud to support the next generation of environmental stewards.
