What happens when human activity reshapes the desert? ๐
At the 25th Sahel & Sahara Interest Group (SSIG) Meeting in Cairo, our PhD candidate Hayat Hachmi shared findings from Morocco's Bouarfa plain โ where shifting water use and agricultural expansion are transforming one of North Africa's most fragile arid ecosystems.
Combining groundwater analysis, satellite imagery, and habitat mapping, Hayat's research traces how these changes ripple through the landscape โ affecting vegetation, biodiversity, and the species that depend on this habitat, including the houbara bustard. ๐ฆ
Science like this helps us understand not just what's changing, but what's at stake.
