As part of DEEC 2026, participants are visiting Butaro’s health system to see how communities connect with health services and how disease elimination and vaccination efforts are put into action on the ground.

The visit offers an opportunity to learn directly from health workers and communities, hear their experiences, and better understand how local engagement helps turn health strategies into meaningful impact.

A different perspective on what it takes to reach communities. 🇷🇼

DEEC 2026 participants stepped outside the classroom for a closer look at how innovation is being applied to real public health challenges in Rwanda.

The visit to Zipline offered an opportunity to explore the people, processes and technology behind the delivery of critical health supplies, while reflecting on how innovative approaches can help address some of the practical challenges health systems face.

A day of discovery, conversation and learning beyond the classroom. 🌍



رؤية مختلفة للابتكار في خدمة الصحة العامة. 🇷🇼

خلال دورة القضاء على الأمراض واستئصالها 2026، خرج المشاركون من قاعات التدريب لخوض تجربة ميدانية في مركز Zipline في موهانغا، رواندا، حيث تعرّفوا عن قرب على كيفية توظيف التكنولوجيا والابتكار في مواجهة تحديات حقيقية في مجال الصحة العامة.

وأتاحت الزيارة للمشاركين فرصة للاطلاع على الكوادر والعمليات والتقنيات التي تساهم في إيصال الإمدادات الصحية الأساسية إلى المجتمعات، والتعرّف على الدور الذي يمكن أن تؤديه الحلول المبتكرة في دعم الأنظمة الصحية وتعزيز الوصول إلى الخدمات.

تجربة جمعت بين الاكتشاف والحوار والتعلّم، وقدّمت للمشاركين منظورًا جديدًا حول تحويل الابتكار إلى أثر ملموس على أرض الواقع. 🌍

Innovation in action 🌍

As part of DEEC 2026, participants visited Zipline’s distribution centre in Muhanga, Rwanda, where they saw firsthand how autonomous drones are transforming the delivery of essential health supplies.

From blood and vaccines to medicines, participants explored how technology and innovation can help strengthen health systems and improve access to critical care.

A valuable opportunity to see how ideas and innovation can translate into real-world health impact.

خلال دورة القضاء على الأمراض واستئصالها 2026، أتيحت للمشاركين فرصة للتعرّف عن قرب على تجربة Zipline في رواندا، وزيارة مركز التوزيع في موهانغا للاطلاع على كيفية توظيف التكنولوجيا للوصول بالإمدادات الصحية الأساسية إلى المجتمعات.

DEEC 2026 is bringing together public health professionals to learn not only from experts, but from each other.

Throughout the course, participants are sharing the challenges they face, the lessons they’ve learned, and the approaches that are working in their own countries. Data + Partnership = Sustained Elimination 📊💧

Speaking at the high-level roundtable at , H.E. Dr. Farida Al Hosani emphasized that WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) is essential infrastructure that prevents disease transmission from returning.

The most immediate opportunity is connecting existing data, just as Nigeria did by combining disease and WASH insights on a single dashboard to direct investments where needs are highest. Long-term success requires practical, cross-sectoral collaboration and exchanging proven national models.

As Dr. Farida noted, we must move beyond discussions to make concrete decisions: choosing one country to start with, making one commitment to integrate health and water data, and establishing one mechanism to track progress. 🤝✨

خلال مشاركتها في جلسة نقاشية ضمن معرض ومؤتمر دبي الدولي للإغاثة والتطوير، أكدت سعادة الدكتورة فريدة الحوسني أن توفير المياه وخدمات الصرف الصحي والنظافة الصحية (WASH) يشكل ركيزة أساسية للحد من انتقال الأمراض ومنع عودتها. وتكمن إحدى أهم الفرص في الاستفادة من البيانات المتاحة وربطها، كما فعلت نيجيريا من خلال دمج بيانات الأمراض وقطاع المياه والصرف الصحي والنظافة الصحية في لوحة معلومات موحدة، ما يساعد على توجيه الاستثمارات إلى المناطق الأكثر احتياجًا.

ويتطلب الحفاظ على ما تحقق من إنجازات تعاونًا فعّالًا بين مختلف القطاعات، وتبادل الخبرات والتجارب الناجحة. وكما أوضحت الدكتورة فريدة، فقد حان الوقت للانتقال من النقاش إلى العمل بخطوات واضحة وملموسة: البدء بدولة واحدة، ودمج بيانات الصحة والمياه، ووضع آلية فعّالة لقياس التقدم ومتابعته. 🤝✨

A GLIDE seed grant took a DEEC alumna and her team into three of Karachi’s highest-risk neighbourhoods, to ask 71 people why polio vaccines get refused. The answers were rarely about vaccines; campaign fatigue, misinformation, and who in a household actually decides.

The research is now published in Vaccines, and the team’s recommendations have been presented to Pakistan’s Provincial and National Emergency Operations Centres.

This is what DEEC is for.



أتاحت منحة بحثية من المعهد العالمي للقضاء على الأمراض المعدية (GLIDE) لإحدى خريجات برنامج القضاء على الأمراض واستئصالها (DEEC) وفريقها إجراء دراسة ميدانية في ثلاثة من أحياء كراتشي الأكثر عرضةً لخطر شلل الأطفال، للبحث عن إجابة لسؤال مهم: لماذا تُرفض لقاحات شلل الأطفال؟

ومن خلال الاستماع إلى 71 شخصاً، تبيّن أن الإجابة نادراً ما كانت تتعلق باللقاح نفسه، بل بعوامل أخرى، من بينها تكرار حملات التطعيم وما يسببه من إرهاق، والمعلومات المضللة، وطبيعة اتخاذ هذا القرار داخل الأسرة.

واليوم، تحوّلت نتائج هذا البحث الميداني إلى أثر ملموس؛ إذ نُشرت الدراسة في مجلة "Vaccines" ، وقُدّمت توصيات الفريق إلى مراكز عمليات الطوارئ على المستويين الإقليمي والوطني في باكستان.

هنا تكمن رسالة برنامج القضاء على الأمراض واستئصالها (DEEC): معرفةٌ تبدأ من الميدان، وتتحول إلى أثر.

هل يبدأ العمل الإنساني بعد وقوع الأزمة، أم أن جوهره الحقيقي يكمن في منعها قبل أن تبدأ؟

تطرح سعادة الدكتورة فريدة الحوسني، الرئيس التنفيذي للمعهد العالمي للقضاء على الأمراض المعدية، رؤية تتجاوز مفهوم الاستجابة للأزمات، لتضع الوقاية وحماية الإنسان في صميم العمل الإنساني، قبل أن تصبح الحاجة إلى الإنقاذ واقعاً.

فمواجهة الأمراض المعدية لا تبدأ لحظة تفشيها، بل قبل ذلك بكثير؛ من خلال بناء منظومات قادرة على الوقاية والرصد والكشف المبكر، والاستثمار في الكفاءات التي تحول دون تطور المخاطر الصحية إلى أزمات واسعة النطاق.

وبمناسبة اليوم العالمي للعمل الإنساني، تتناول سعادتها في مقالها كيف يمكن للوقاية من الأمراض والقضاء عليها أن تشكّلا ركيزة أساسية لعمل إنساني أكثر استدامة، يحمي المجتمعات اليوم ويعزز قدرتها على مواجهة تحديات الغد.

Does humanitarian action begin after a crisis — or before it?

H.E. Dr. Farida Al Hosani, CEO of GLIDE, offers a broader perspective on humanitarian action: one that begins with protecting people before they ever need to be rescued.

Tackling infectious diseases is not only about responding when they spread. It means investing in prevention, surveillance, early detection, and the people and systems that can stop health threats from escalating.
