The KBA Community: Giving voice to the most critical sites ๐ŸŒŽ

By becoming part of our community, you will be part of a vibrant network of committed conservationists who are actively contributing to the identification of KBAs worldwide.

Why do we need Key Biodiversity Areas for our oceans now? ๐ŸŒŠ

โš ๏ธ Our oceans are in poor health. Governments have agreed on targets, like Targets 1, 2 and 3 of the KMGBF, to halt biodiversity loss and restore marine ecosystems to reverse this trend.

๐Ÿชธ By identifying KBAs, governments can strategically direct scarce conservation resources to the most important places in our ocean. Additionally, KBAs enable us to effectively monitor success and facilitate harmonised reporting under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the forthcoming Agreement on Marine Biodiversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ Agreement), and other Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs).

The World Database of KBAs provides freely accessible data on over 16,600 sites identified to date. This makes KBAs a useful and accessible tool for governments and conservation organisations to identify priority areas for conservation and guide the expansion of protected areas and OECMs.

Today is a monumental day for conservation in Panama and beyond.

We joined the Ministerio de Ambiente de Panamรก and the Key Biodiversity Areas Partnership to announce the official launch of Panama's National Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) Assessment by signing a Memorandum of Understanding.

This assessment will help identify the places that matter most for biodiversity conservation in Panama. It will directly support the country's National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan, guide national conservation priorities, and advance Panama's commitments under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

MASSIVE WIN FOR PANAMA AND BIODIVERSITY ๐ŸŽ‰

Panama has officially launched its National Assessment of Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs). The Amphibian Survival Alliance proudly joined the Ministry of Environment of Panama and the Key Biodiversity Areas Partnership to sign the Memorandum of Understanding, making this possible.
