🌿 Monitoring matters. Now there’s a new tool to help.

The new KBA Monitoring Platform is now available through the World Database of Key Biodiversity Areas (WDKBA), helping users track the state of biodiversity, pressures on sites, and conservation responses over time.
By combining local knowledge with global datasets, the platform supports more consistent monitoring—and better-informed conservation decisions.

Uncover our enhanced Site and Map search functions, designed to make the KBA data searching process smoother than ever. With these tools, you’ll be able to:

📍 Search KBAs by name or ID
📄 Access site factsheets—now with a map view available
🌏 Filter the data by country or region
🦧 Filter your search by criteria, classification, species, and much more!
🗺️ Alternate the Map view between topographic and satellite image

Why do we need Key Biodiversity Areas for our oceans now? 🌊

⚠️ Our oceans are in poor health. Governments have agreed on targets, like Targets 1, 2 and 3 of the KMGBF, to halt biodiversity loss and restore marine ecosystems to reverse this trend.

🪸 By identifying KBAs, governments can strategically direct scarce conservation resources to the most important places in our ocean. Additionally, KBAs enable us to effectively monitor success and facilitate harmonised reporting under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the forthcoming Agreement on Marine Biodiversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ Agreement), and other Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs).

𝐊𝐁𝐀 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐯𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 🌍

The World Database of KBAs provides freely accessible data on over 16,600 sites identified to date. This makes KBAs a useful and accessible tool for governments and conservation organisations to identify priority areas for conservation and guide the expansion of protected areas and OECMs.

𝐏𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐚 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐥𝐚𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐀𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬 (𝐊𝐁𝐀𝐬).

Today is a monumental day for conservation in Panama and beyond.

We joined the Ministerio de Ambiente de Panamá and the Key Biodiversity Areas Partnership to announce the official launch of Panama's National Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) Assessment by signing a Memorandum of Understanding.

This assessment will help identify the places that matter most for biodiversity conservation in Panama. It will directly support the country's National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan, guide national conservation priorities, and advance Panama's commitments under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
