🦏 World Rhino Day | Protecting Zimbabwe’s Rhinos

Rhino poaching may be at lower levels than during the peak of the crisis, but the threat has not disappeared.

In 2024, Africa’s rhino poaching rate fell to 2.15% — the lowest level since 2011. Yet an estimated one rhino was still poached every 15 hours across Africa. In Hwange National Park, the white rhino population declined to extinction, while black rhinos also faced severe losses in the wider region.

Today, protecting rhinos means constant monitoring, dedicated rangers, strong law enforcement and continued support for conservation on the ground.This World Rhino Day, we recognise the rangers and conservation teams standing between these animals and the threats they face. 🦏

Protect the rhino. Protect the wild.

Protecting them means protecting the habitats they depend on, the wildlife that shares those spaces, and the future of our wild places.

WORLD RANGER CHALLENGE 🛡️🐘

Yesterday, 4 of our VFAPU rangers — Kalvin, Billy, Brian and Lavender — took on the World Ranger Challenge and completed it in an impressive 3 hours and 39 minutes. 💪🏾

Carrying 22kg backpacks throughout the challenge, they put their strength, endurance and determination to the test.

A huge congratulations to our team for taking on the challenge and representing VFAPU with pride. 🦏🌍

Broken pipes, leaks and damaged infrastructure can quickly mean less water reaching the animals that depend on these vital water points, especially as the dry season intensifies.

Regular repairs and maintenance help ensure that water keeps flowing when wildlife need it most.

From solar-powered boreholes to battery systems and ongoing maintenance, we work year-round to provide reliable water for wildlife across some of Zimbabwe’s most important conservation areas. 💧🐘

A BUSY MONTH ON THE GROUND 🐾

August was another busy month for the Victoria Falls Anti-Poaching Unit, with 117 patrols carried out across Victoria Falls and surrounding areas.

Our team recovered 29 guinea fowl snares and 9 old impala and kudu snares, while encountering 44 illegal firewood offenders — 13 of whom were arrested and fined.

Several successful operations also resulted in arrests and prosecutions, made possible through close cooperation with the Zimbabwe Republic Police, City Council Police and Parks authorities.

Every patrol, every snare removed and every arrest helps create a safer landscape for Victoria Falls’ wildlife. 🐘

This recognition belongs to every ranger, supporter, partner and member of our team who works tirelessly to protect Zimbabwe’s wildlife.

Being recognised alongside organisations making a difference across Africa is an honour — and a reminder that every patrol, every rescue and every life protected matters.
