Today, YANAYA TRUST joins the global community in marking Human Rights Day 2025.🌍
For us, this theme is critical. Human rights are not abstract concepts but rather they are the essentials that determine the daily survival, safety and dignity of the women and vulnerable groups we serve. These rights, the right to education, safety, health and a voice must be guaranteed every single day.
As a youth-led organisation, we reaffirm the core values of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: Freedom, Equality and Justice for All. We are the generation ensuring that these values translate into real, tangible protections in the lives of the most vulnerable.
Every person. Every day. Every essential right secured.

🌸 "Every Story is Unique, Every Journey Matters" 🌸

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and this year’s theme reminds us that every story is unique, and every journey matters. From diagnosis to recovery, every experience is different, but the strength and courage shown along the way are what unite us.

🔹 The Facts:

1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, but early detection has helped increase survival rates to over 90% when caught early.

Men can also be affected—though rare, breast cancer in men accounts for 1 in 100 cases.

This year's theme, “Every Story is Unique, Every Journey Matters,” reminds us to honor the personal battles each person faces, to listen with empathy, and to support them every step of the way. Every journey, no matter how long or short, is meaningful. 💖

Let’s spread awareness, support research, and empower those walking this brave path. We rise together, one story at a time.

In this address to Parliament, the Deputy Minister of Health Sleiman Mangwengwende details the challenges faced by Zimbabwe's national budget due to international sanctions. He acknowledges the crucial role played by the United States of America in funding a portion of the country's health budget, highlighting this support as vital until recent funding cuts. The Minister emphasises that despite these reductions, Zimbabwe continues to maintain essential healthcare programs through partnerships with various international organisations and nations. The collaborative nature of international aid, explaining that these partnerships often involve Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) aligned with the receiving country's policies and priorities. The Deputy Minister cites the example of support for HIV/AIDS, TB, and malaria initiatives, demonstrating how these collaborations help mitigate the impact of reduced funding and ensure the continuation of critical health services for the Zimbabwean people.

Health is the foundation of national development, and financing it domestically is a powerful statement of sovereignty and responsibility. When we prioritise domestic health financing, we secure the lives of our citizens, reduce reliance on unpredictable external funding, and ensure that our health strategies are aligned with our own realities. It is not just about funding,it’s about dignity, ownership, and long-term impact. No country can thrive without healthy people, and no health system can stand strong without committed national investment.

Our healthcare system faces a critical funding crisis. Investing in domestic health financing and establishing local condoms and other medications manufacturing is not just about numbers; it's about protecting lives and preventing devastating shortages that impact communities across the nation. Let's prioritise health and well-being. This was an area of cause discussed last week during the parliament session.

Zimbabwe's Healthcare Crisis: A Path Towards Sustainable Funding
A critical issue facing Zimbabwe and many other low-to-middle-income African countries is highlighted in this discussion where the fragility of the healthcare systems due to over-reliance on external funding is dire. This discussion poses the risks of not achieving sustainable financing for healthcare, specifically concerning the 2030 HIV/AIDS targets. This precarious situation, is not unique to Zimbabwe many nations face similar challenges. When global crises hit, funding often dries up, leaving essential services disrupted. The core problem lies in the unsustainable model of relying primarily on foreign aid. This creates a cycle of dependence, hindering the development of robust, locally-owned and managed healthcare infrastructure. This discussion suggests several crucial steps Zimbabwe can take to break free from this cycle:
1. Domestic Resource Mobilization
• Increased Taxation
• Private Sector Investment
• Innovative Financing Mechanisms
• Strengthening Partnerships
• Decentralization of Services
• Community-Led Monitoring and Evaluation
