We recently joined the Pumula community under heartbreaking circumstances.
A 15-year-old child lost their life after drowning in one of the pits left behind by illegal sand poaching. A young life gone too soon - simply because of an avoidable danger in our own community.
These pits are more than just holes in the ground. They are silent threats. For many young people, they become places of curiosity or escape, but too often, they turn into sites of tragedy.
What we witnessed in Pumula was powerful - pain, yes, but also unity. Residents, parents, and community leaders coming together, not just to mourn, but to demand change and protect the next child.
Through the support of Honourable Bulawayo Youth Quota MP Sikhuphukile Dube, we were able to assist the meeting with refreshments, helping create a space for open dialogue and collective action standing in solidarity with the community during this difficult time.
One life lost is one too many.
We owe it to our young people to act, to speak, and to fix what is within our control.
