R**e is unlawful s*xual activity that involves s*xual in*******se and it is done against the will of a person. R**e is done through force or threat. The act of r**e is normally committed by a male counterparts against female counterparts. According to the Zimbabwe Gender Commission (2022) at least 22 women are r**ed daily in Zimbabwe with an average of one r**e taking place per 75 minutes translating to an average of 646 women being violated each month.According to Child line Zimbabwe, they received 25,000 cases of abuse of children in 2018. The s*xual abuses accounted for 26%, physical abuses 20%, neglect 17%, emotional abuses 17%, and the rest 20% other forms of abuses.

Those convicted of r**e or aggravated indecent assault will soon face minimum mandatory 15-year jail terms under proposed amendments to the criminal code set to be enacted to arrest the rising number of s*xual assault cases.

16 Days of Activism to End Gender Based Violence: Success Story

In the course of 16 days of Activism to End Gender based violence against women and girls lot of issues came out as we were having online awareness on our social media platforms. It is very devastating that a lot of women and young girls are being silenced and there are lacking knowledge and uplifting messages on how to deal with abuse and different perpetrators. As Faith Hope Foundation during the awareness campaign we mainly focused on educating young girls and women on our social media platforms, educating and alarming them on how to protect young girls and women in our society and homes. It was so disturbing that a lot of young girls and women are living in fear in their own homes and around their own family members. At the end there are lacking knowledge on how to deal with such issues.
During the awareness campaign to end Gender based violence against women and girls there was a certain young girl who was brave enough to share her story with us. Rumbidzai (not her real name) wrote a note to Faith Hope Foundation narrating on how she was r**ed by her mother’s boyfriend 8 years ago and her grandfather s*xually assault her as well. “I grew up in an abusive family where my father abused my mother as well as us, things were not well for us until my mother decided to run away with me and my 2 siblings.” The young girl narrated her story with so much pain and regret in her voice and she went on to elaborate how they live in farms where her mother started to have different boyfriends. “We went to live in farms in Nyazura where my mother started having boyfriends and brought them to our place, she had this one young man she loved so much but they constantly quarrel with the man.” With tears on her face she explains how the man r**ed her when the mother was out to look for a job at nearby farms. “Whenever they quarrel my mother would go out living the man behind and he would then ask my siblings to go and fetch water or fire wood. that is when he would r**e me. I was in grade 5 when it started.” The young girl said that she told her mother what her boyfriend was doing but she did not take action rather she was feeling sorry for the man.
She said during the same year a certain teacher at her school offered to take stay with her and pay for her school fees in exchange she will be doing some chores at her house. “At first it was nice and l felt very comfortable that I finally get rest. I finished my primary level then it started when I was in form 22. Grandfather, the husband for the teacher started abusing me, he would ask for a kiss and a hug every morning.” It is very heartbreaking to come across issues like these, where a girl child is abused with no one noticing anything. The very painful par is that the grandfather even ask the girl to marry his 40 year old son and the mother agreed to the arrangement.

kindly take note of the following inappropriate actions by some parents and guardians...👇

👉Watching movies containing kissing & other acts of s*xual intimacy in the presence of children.
👉Dressing up in their presence.
👉Bathing them together in the bathroom, whether same s*x or opposite s*x (very wrong).
👉 Leaving children naked in front of other siblings, friends or neighbours.
👉Entrusting them with other people.
..and so on.

In conclusion, please let everyone be vigilant in looking after our children. We must never be negligent regarding them, and know that no one may be absolutely entrusted with our kids. However, since you may not always be with them all the time, please do review the sessions of your absence with them when you get back. This will give you an appraisal of the goings-on around them and their experiences during your period of absence.

If you don't educate your children at home on s*x, they will learn it from the wrong sources both in theory and practical.

The scourge of violence and r**e against women have been on the rise throughout this year. The main perpetrators of this infallible act are close relatives and family members. It is gravely alarming when we see 9 year and 8 year olds giving birth, Who would do such an unspeakable act to innocent souls? A few months ago there was a case of an 8 year old girl from Tsolotsho who recently gave birth. At first the father was arrested as a suspect but after the baby was born the DNA test results showed that the person responsible was a 13 old boy, a cousin to the minor. Whilst the tragedy was still lingering in our minds there was again another case of a 9 year old girl from Bindura who was r**ed by her 17 year old cousins.

Ans: 👉A touch on any of the private parts (or areas around them)

7. If someone is trying to touch or play with your private parts, it is called what?

Ans: 👉 No one must kiss me on my lips - not even my mum, my dad, my uncle or my aunty.

11. What do abusers tell their victims & are those things true?

Parents, at this point, you must realise that some children don't tell when someone is s*xually abusing them because their parents could be very 'HARSH' and unapproachable. This is indeed a very delicate issue which must be addressed with utmost self-restraint, maturity and caution!

7. What will happen to you if someone is trying to abuse you and you don't tell?

- The abuser will continue to abuse you and threaten you the more.
- It will affect your studies because you won't be able to concentrate.
- You will be unhappy/depressed.
- You could be physically harmed and your life could be in danger
- You could contract diseases HIV/AIDS, etc.

8. What are the things you should & should not do to avoid been s*xually abused?

- Don't go anywhere without your parent's consent.
- Practice buddy system by always being in pairs or groups, but never alone.
- Don't talk to strangers.
- Don't allow anyone lie on you or carry you on his thighs.
- Don't allow anyone ask you to take off your clothes/pants.
- No one must ever touch or play with your private parts.
- You must report any such attempt by anyone (SCREAM, RUN, REPORT).
