I will fight with all that I am
For the girl child—
Because I know what it means
To have nobody
When you need everybody
To stand with you.

I have learned
That sometimes a stranger’s heart
Can be kinder,
Gentler,
And warmer
Than those of your own blood.

So by all means possible,
Protect the girl child—
From pain,
From silence,
From the weight that breaks her mind.

For the woman she will become
Is shaped
By how she grows,
By the love she receives,
And by the hands that lift her
When the world tries to push her down.
