WORD OF THE DAY: CHILDREN AS CUSTODIANS OF THE ENVIRONMENT

Imagine a group of children walking through their community.

They notice plastic scattered along the path, a tree struggling for water, a space where trees can be planted.

One child asks, “What can we do about it?”

That question is where environmental stewardship begins.

Children are not simply waiting to become tomorrow’s environmental leaders.

They can be custodians of nature today.

Through planting trees, protecting wildlife, conserving water, reducing waste and keeping their surroundings clean, children learn that even small actions can make a difference.

But children also need a seat at the table.

Let us give them the knowledge, space and confidence to participate in protecting the environment.

When children care for nature, they grow up understanding that they belong to it,

And that protecting it is our shared responsibility.

Day of the African Child 2026 | 16 June 2026

Today, we join others in commemorating the Day of the African Child under the theme: “Ensuring Universal Access to Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene for Every Child in Africa.”

At Community Conservation and Climate Frontiers, we believe that access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) is not a privilege—it is a fundamental right for every child. Millions of African children still face challenges linked to unsafe water, inadequate sanitation, and poor hygiene, affecting their health, education, dignity, and future opportunities.

This year's theme aligns with the African Union's commitment to sustainable water availability and safe sanitation systems, while advancing the aspirations of African Union Agenda 2063 for a prosperous, healthy, and inclusive Africa where children can thrive.

As we engage, educate, and empower children, let us work together to ensure that no child is left behind in accessing clean water, safe sanitation, and healthy learning environments.

-Every child deserves dignity and health.

Children are not just the leaders of tomorrow, they are important partners in protecting our environment today. Across Africa and the world, biodiversity loss and climate change are among the greatest challenges facing communities, wildlife, and future generations. Educating children about these issues at an early age helps build knowledge, responsibility, and a lifelong commitment to environmental stewardship.

General Comment No. 26 specifically states that:
-Children are disproportionately affected by environmental degradation, biodiversity loss, and climate change.
-Governments should provide environmental and climate education to children.
-Children have the right to access environmental information and participate in decisions affecting their future.
-Protecting the environment is closely linked to protecting children's rights.

At Community Conservation and Climate Frontiers Organisation, we believe that storytelling is a powerful tool for learning. Through our children's booklets on wildlife protection and climate change, we are helping young minds understand the value of biodiversity, the importance of conserving natural habitats, and the actions they can take to protect our planet.

When children learn to appreciate nature, they grow into adults who are more likely to protect forests, rivers, wildlife, and ecosystems. Investing in children's environmental education is investing in a sustainable future for all.

This month as we celebrate Africa Day we reflect on how Indigenous knowledge systems (IKS) offers grounded, adaptive, and culturally embedded solutions that modern conservation and climate frameworks are increasingly trying to reintegrate. Many African traditions embed conservation into spiritual and cultural norms. Certain wildlife species and landscapes (sacred forests, rivers, mountains) are protected through totems, taboos and customary laws. This informal governance has historically safeguarded critical habitats and endangered species.
