How Can Orphans And Vulnerable Children Cope In Today's Society?
Today's society has a lot of new information available on internet and other social groupings in our localities. Such being the case, it has become necessary to have local authorities and civic groups to look into what's being churned into the populace in general, and children and youths in particular, as some of the information is not suitable for our future parents and leaders. If unchecked, globalisation and free access to information is gradually coming up with a breed of youngsters suffering from acute identity crisis.
The situation tends to be worse on orphans and other vulnerable children, who are likely learn the wrong things if unguided.
Orphaned children, and some in broken homes or those left in the care of relatives while the parents are in diaspora, or some simply from quarrelsome homes can be silently grieving for long ending up falling for anything that provides temporary solace. In most cases they fall into drugs and substance abuse and forming gangs that can be a menace to society.
This scenario in society calls for intervention measures to help the victims be focused and committed to being loyal beneficial members of their country by way of
offering them psycho-social support and life skills. The exercise provides emotional, social, and psychological assistance to help them cope with challenges and build resilience.
In giving emotional support the encumbents must feel they have a safe, nurturing environment where they feel comforted, listened to, and their ideas are validated.
They should get both individual and group counseling as situations permit to help them process their emotions, develop coping strategies, and build high self-esteem.
This in a way is the social connection extending into friendships, and community engagement, it reduces feelings of isolation and loneliness.
Life skills training on the other hand is essential for it exposes them to skills, in problem-solving, decision-making, and communication. That way the children develop ability to navigate challenges.
In the process the participants come to acknowledge the impact of trauma on their lives and behavior, then endeavour to create a safe and supportive environment.
By the end of each camp the campers must have improved emotionally, now with reduced symptoms of anxiety and depression.
They should have developed coping strategies, resilience as they navigate challenges and adversity.
They also should be gradually developing positive relationships, social skills, and community connections.
It the is expected of the campers to confidently manage their emotions and healthy coping mechanisms, adopting a notion of high self esteem.
By the time they leave the campsite the children must have formed positive relationships with peers, caregivers, and community members!
