MEMO was formed by people from different areas of expertise in a bid to revamp the sunshine nature of Harare. Though the organisation will be operating from Harare, it will also cover remotest rural areas and other cities, and towns. In short, the sphere of influence of MEMO will be Harare and beyond. The name “mangwana-ndinhasi” is a Shona name which means that our future is determine
d by our current environmental decisions and actions. In this light MEMO calls for sustainable development, development to meet our needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It is the mandate of the organisation to embark in efforts to protect wildlife and revegetating the forests, replacing the already depleted natural resources. Mission

Aim
To conserve the natural resources from Harare and beyond and promote appropriate protection, wise and sustainable use of natural resources and sustainable development
Objectives
The main objectives of the environmental education and action program are as follows:
1) To create and maintain a network of members and partners in order to effectively distribute and share environmental information.
2) To advance community awareness and participation in, and the practice of all aspects of, conservation in Harare and beyond, through the promotion, organisation, implementation, guidance and encouragement of:
a) Study and research environmental issues
b) Environmental education
c) Monitoring of, reporting on, environmental issues and developments
d) Wise environmental decision-making
e) Conservation and protection of the environment of Harare and beyond
3) To create a generation that is aware that is aware of its environment hence be actively involved in its protection and improvement.
4) To act as a forum for people interested in Harare and beyond, by holding regular meetings and excursions, which shall be open to members as well as non members of MEMO.
5) To work with communities and educate them so as to take full responsibility of the environment so that they take action to protect the environment.
6) To offer an opportunity to the community to acquire the necessary knowledge for protection and improvement of their environment.
7) To sensitize young minds of the problems facing the environment hence offer an opportunity to participate in finding solutions to these problems.
8) To actively involve the community in replacing the depleted natural resources such as trees by encouraging quarterly community activities that are aimed at replanting trees through community leaders.
9) To educate and work with small scale miners on the best practices that would mitigate the adverse environmental impact of their activities.
10) To ease pressure on remaining forests by teaching and demonstrating energy saving techniques (e.g.) fireless cooker, energy conserving stoves, i.e tsotso stoves etc, nursery management practices and on-farm agro forestry.
