A WORKERS’ DAY BEYOND CELEBRATION: YOUTH LEADERS UNITE FOR TRANSFORMATION
Harare, Zimbabwe – Today
In a powerful and symbolic engagement that redefined the spirit of Workers’ Day, the Executive Director of Zimbabwe Young Farmers for Sustainable Development (ZiYFA-SD), Dr. Joseph Kakoto, joined hands with Matrix Rehabilitation Camp Executive Director, Mr. Tafadzwa Chidawa, at Dzivarasekwa Stadium in Harare Zone 3.
This was more than a celebration—it was a call to action.
At a time when over 60% of Zimbabwe’s population is under 35, and youth unemployment remains a pressing challenge, this collaboration presents a practical solution. With agriculture contributing approximately 12–18% to GDP and employing over 50% of the population, the sector stands as a critical pathway for youth empowerment, job creation, and economic growth.
Through this partnership, Dr. Kakoto and Mr. Chidawa are combining agribusiness development and youth rehabilitation to transform thousands of young people into productive, disciplined, and self-reliant citizens. While ZiYFA-SD focuses on equipping youth with practical farming skills, market access, and entrepreneurship training, Matrix Rehabilitation Camp is restoring hope, purpose, and direction among vulnerable youth.
This initiative is fully aligned with Zimbabwe’s national development agenda, Vision 2030 Zimbabwe, which aims to achieve an upper middle-income economy by 2030 through inclusive growth, youth empowerment, and job creation. It also supports the priorities of National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1) and the upcoming National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2), particularly in:
Youth employment and empowerment
Agricultural value chain development (chilli, paprika, and horticulture)
Skills development and entrepreneurship
Social protection and rehabilitation
By integrating rehabilitation with agribusiness training, the initiative introduces a holistic model of transformation—turning challenges into opportunities and beneficiaries into active economic contributors.
Speaking during the engagement, the leaders emphasized:
> “Today is not just about celebrating workers—it is about creating workers, restoring purpose, and building a generation that is productive, disciplined, and empowered.”
Held at Dzivarasekwa Stadium, the event attracted strong participation from local youth and community stakeholders, marking the beginning of a movement with the potential to deliver real, measurable impact.
Indeed, this was more than a Workers’ Day—it was a strategic step toward transforming lives, strengthening communities, and contributing meaningfully to Zimbabwe’s journey toward sustainable development.
