In today’s Asked Question we address the question: Why can’t the plant breeders develop Vitamin A maize varieties that are white in colour?

Answer: It is not possible for a maize variety or any other plant that contains provitamin A carotenoids to be white in colour. This is because the provitamin A carotenoids found in plants are naturally yellow to orange in colour. They are the ones that give a yellow to orange color to the crops that contain them, such as the pumpkins, pawpaws, mangoes, carrots and in this case, orange maize and orange flesh sweetpotato.

Grow and eat Vitamin A maize today!🌽🙂
