ABANEBHONGO PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES RUNS COMMUNITY KITCHEN SUPPORTING OVER 90 FAMILIES IN SOUTH AFRICA'S EASTERN CAPE

Eastern Cape, South Africa — In a powerful demonstration of community solidarity and compassion, Abanebhongo Persons With Disabilities is running a community kitchen that is providing food assistance to more than 90 families in villages around Nqamakwe in South Africa's Eastern Cape Province.

The initiative is being supported personally by Nosintu Mcimeli, the founder of Abanebhongo Persons With Disabilities, who has taken it upon herself to fund the programme from her own pocket.

Every weekend, from Friday to Sunday mornings, Mcimeli opens her home to prepare and provide meals for families in need, with a particular focus on households caring for children with disabilities.

Speaking about the initiative, Mcimeli highlighted the immense challenges faced by caregivers of children with disabilities, who often have to balance the high costs associated with disability-related needs with the basic necessity of putting food on the table.

"Things are tough on caregivers' shoulders, especially those of kids with disabilities, whereby they have to spend money on special needs and lack food and other essentials," she said.

The community kitchen is more than a source of food. It represents dignity, compassion, inclusion and solidarity, while highlighting the critical role that grassroots disability organisations play in responding to the everyday challenges faced by persons with disabilities and their families.

The African Union Disability Council commends Nosintu Mcimeli and Abanebhongo Persons With Disabilities for their commitment to supporting vulnerable families and for demonstrating the power of community-led action.

The initiative also serves as a reminder that disability inclusion must address the whole family, recognising that caregivers and families of persons with disabilities often face additional social and economic pressures.

The African Union Disability Council calls on governments, the private sector, development partners, civil society organisations and well-wishers to strengthen support for grassroots disability organisations and community initiatives that are making a tangible difference in the lives of persons with disabilities and their families.

No family should have to choose between meeting the disability-related needs of a loved one and putting food on the table.

Together, we can build a more inclusive Africa where no one is left behind.

Yesterday, the African Disability Forum had the pleasure of hosting Disability Rights Fund Regional Program Manager-Africa, Mr. Opiyo Sati for a strategic discussion on strengthening collaboration and advancing the disability rights movement across Africa.

The engagement provided an important opportunity to reflect on shared priorities, explore emerging opportunities, and reinforce our collective commitment to ensuring that Organizations of Persons with Disabilities remain at the forefront of advocacy, policy influence, and inclusive development efforts across the continent.

Strong disability movements are built through collaboration, shared learning, and sustained investment in disability-led organizations.

We value our partnership with Disability Rights Fund and look forward to continuing our joint efforts to advance the rights, and meaningful participation of persons with disabilities throughout Africa.
