A Milestone for Zimbabweโs Intersex Community
Wednesday 5 August 2026 marked an important milestone for the intersex community in Zimbabwe. As Intersex Community Zimbabwe Trust, we are deeply encouraged by the opportunity to engage directly with senior Government officials, Ministers, medical professionals and other key stakeholders on issues affecting the lives and rights of intersex persons.
For us, this moment represents 10 years of advocacy, courage and the determination of intersex persons and their families to be seen, heard and respected. We presented recommendations calling for accessible and free healthcare, protection of intersex children from unnecessary and non-consensual medical interventions, equal access to education, employment and public services, protection from discrimination, appropriate legal recognition, political participation, safe access to public facilities and stronger public awareness among other things. These are not demands for special treatment; they are calls for equality, dignity, safety and the full enjoyment of human rights.
We sincerely appreciate the Ministers namely Hon Ziyambi Ziyambi and his Deputy, Hon Edgar Moyo, Hon Douglas Mombeshora, perm sec Mavis Sibanda and other senior Government officials who took the time to sit and listen to our concerns and engage with the realities faced by our community. We believe meaningful change is possible when Government, civil society, medical professionals and communities work together.
As Intersex Community Zimbabwe Trust, we remain hopeful and committed to ensuring that the voices and lived experiences of intersex people remain at the centre of this conversation. Tsitsi Betha
We were heard. Now, we look forward to turning that listening into meaningful action.
