Through the Food Security and Professional Agroecological Training in Zimbabwe (SAFAZ) Project, communities in Buhera and Chipinge are continuing to benefit from ongoing efforts in providing access to clean water. Through the installation of solarized boreholes, water storage tanks, and tap stands, children and families are gaining more reliable access to safe water. This work is being made possible through the generous support of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) and the collaboration of local communities and partners.

As we approach the Day of the African Child 2026 commemorations, under the theme "Ensuring Universal Access to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene for Every Child in Africa," these ongoing interventions reflect our commitment as Terre des Hommes Italia in Zimbabwe to SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, and our efforts to ensure that children have access to safe and sustainable water services.

Yesterday, Terre des Hommes Italia in Zimbabwe was honored to attend the celebration of Italy’s Republic Day at the Embassy of Italy in Zimbabwe, commemorating the 80th anniversary of the 2 June 1946 referendum that established the Italian Republic.

The event highlighted the growing partnership between Zimbabwe and Italy, with renewed commitments to cooperation in trade, investment, education, health, and culture. During the celebrations, our team also had the opportunity to engage with distinguished guests and share insights on the SAFAZ Project, which is supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation through the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS)

Through the generous support of the World Food Programme, Terre des Hommes Italy, through its Refugee Assistance Programme (RAP) team in Tongogara Refugee Settlement, successfully completed the April 2026 food distribution cycle. During the cycle, at least 10,060 individuals from 2,250 households received both cash and in-kind assistance.

Beneficiaries of the SAFAZ project co-funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) and Oak Foundation are actively clearing land and improving road access, laying the groundwork for essential infrastructure.

In Chipinge Ward 23 at Zamchiya’s Garden, and at Mutiusinazita in Ward 27 of Buhera, communities are coming together to bring these project sites to life through their dedication and hard work.

With 120 households taking turns in stump removal and road clearance, this collective effort demonstrates strong community ownership and a shared commitment to sustainable development.

Step by step, these communities are not just preparing land, but they are building pathways to resilience, opportunity, and a better future.

On 10 April 2026, TDH Italy had the distinct honor of hosting the Deputy Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, accompanied by the Commissioner for Refugees, at our mobile storage unit in Tongogara Refugee Settlement. This was an important visit that reaffirmed our shared commitment to strengthening collaboration and enhancing service delivery for the refugee community.

Since January 2017, with the steadfast support of the Government of Zimbabwe, WFP, and UNHCR, TDH Italy has been privileged to provide life-saving emergency food assistance to the refugee community at Tongogara. This enduring partnership has been instrumental in ensuring that no one is left behind.

The construction of the mobile storage unit in 2021, made possible through the support of WFP, marked a significant milestone in improving access to food assistance for the growing refugee population at the time. By easing congestion at the old warehouse, the facility has helped create a more dignified, efficient, and accessible system for food distribution, reflecting our collective commitment to upholding the dignity and well-being of those we serve.

Celebrating Women’s Month

Meet Rumbidzayi Marevegwa, our Child Protection Lead at Terre des Hommes Italia in Zimbabwe and Project Coordinator for the PREaCH Project, as she shares the impactful work being done to empower women and girls and stand against child marriage. Since 2024, with support from UNICEF Zimbabwe, PREaCH continues to champion change, giving hope and a stronger voice to communities.

Under this year’s theme, “Rights. Justice. Action. for all women and girls,” we stand committed to creating a safer, more equitable future for every girl.
