𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐬 𝐙𝐢𝐦𝐛𝐚𝐛𝐰𝐞 𝐃𝐢𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐆𝐨𝐤𝐰𝐞 through Empowering Communities In Climate Adaptation and Resilience Building In Zimbabwe (ECCAR) Project , with funding from Caritas Australia in collaboration with Forestry Commission, Agricultural Rural Development Advisory Services, Environment Management Agency and the Gokwe South Rural District Council, carried out a gully reclamation exercise in Ward 18( Gwarusonde and Jororo) and Ward 31 ( Guyu and Charama ).

This initiative was aimed at restoring degraded land and preventing further soil erosion by rehabilitating gullies for regeneration, improving land stability, and promoting sustainable land management practices.

It also empowered local communities with practical knowledge and skills on how to reclaim and manage gullies effectively. Through active community participation, the project strengthens climate resilience and supports long-term environmental sustainability in the area, ensuring that the land continues to benefit both present and future generations.

Caritas Gokwe is guided by Laudato SI in it's integral ecology approach, whereby consumerism, irresponsible economic activities which perpetuate environmental degradation and other anti-environmental protection initiatives are NOT condoned.

We are pleased to share the inspiring story of Mr. Madzikwa Patson, aged 90, is a dedicated farmer from Ward 15 in Gokwe North. Through the Water for Dignity 2 Project, implemented by Caritas Gokwe with technical support from AGRITEX and funding from CAFOD, Mr. Madzikwa benefited from conservation agriculture trainings locally known as Pfumvudza.
Despite his advanced age, Mr. Madzikwa, who lives with his 77-year-old wife(now living with disability), prepared three Pfumvudza plots at his homestead last year.He sold 2goats inorder to buy a 10kg of maize certified seed.Remarkably, he prepared planting basins on his own and carefully managed the crops throughout the season. Although the wife could not walk well, she would spend time in the field weeding, Today, the family is joyfully celebrating the fruits of hard work .Mr Patson is anticipating an average yield of one tonne per plot, which he says is sufficient to feed his household. On another plot he grew small grains(sorghum) which he said is a safety net in the event of inadequate rains. The family has some small plots of cow peas, groundnuts, and pumpkins.
Mr. Madzikwa expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the conservation agriculture knowledge and skills he received through AGRITEX, made possible with the support of Caritas Gokwe and CAFOD. His story is a powerful testimony of resilience, commitment, and positive impact of climate-smart agriculture in strengthening household food security. The household is rearing some small livestock in the form of 71chickens and goats. The family of two is always happy and food secure despite being old age. They assist other household instead of being assisted.
