Position Title: Assistant Field Officer

Location: Chimanimani District; Geographic Focus: Eastern Cluster
Reporting to: Project Coordinator.
1. Background and Purpose of the Position
CELUO implements a community-centred peacebuilding and Community cohesion programme that strengthens local capacities for dialogue and non-violent conflict resolution. The Assistant Field Officer (AFO) position is designed to provide hands-on field support to peacebuilding activities, with a strong focus on community-level implementation, accompaniment, documentation, and follow-up.
The role bridges structured project coordination and grassroots facilitation, ensuring that community cohesion interventions are well prepared, locally grounded, and properly documented.
2. Role Overview
The Assistant Field Officer supports the practical implementation, monitoring, and documentation of peacebuilding activities at community level. The role focuses on empowering and accompanying local peacebuilding actors and structures to independently plan, implement, and sustain dialogue and conflict transformation processes.
This role is particularly suited for candidates with strong community experience who may not necessarily hold an advanced academic degree but demonstrate commitment, reliability, and practical facilitation skills.
3. Key Duties and Responsibilities
Community-Level Implementation Support
- Support the organisation to facilitate peacebuilding activities including community dialogues, Peace Circles, trainings, exchange visits, and conflict sensitisation meetings.
- Assist in the formation, strengthening, and follow-up of Ward Peace Teams, Healing Friends, Youth Groups, and other community peace structures.
- Provide on-the-ground support to Community Facilitators during field activities and ward-level engagements.
Mobilisation, Communication and Coordination
- Assist with community mobilisation and coordination with local leaders, VIDCOs, traditional leaders, and other stakeholders.
- Support logistical preparation for activities (venues, materials, participant coordination).
- Serve as a link between CELUO field staff and community actors, ensuring timely information flow.
Monitoring, Documentation and Reporting
- Support basic monitoring of activities and follow-up on action points at community level.
- Assist in collecting attendance lists, feedback, photos, short narratives, and success stories.
- Support translation of simple reports, meeting notes, and monitoring tools between Shona and English.
- Contribute to weekly activity summaries and monthly reporting inputs.
Administrative and Operational Support
- Support the maintenance of basic project records and files related to peacebuilding activities.
- Assist with acquittals, simple financial documentation, and field logistics as assigned.
- Support supervision and coordination of community-based support roles where required.
Safeguarding, Conduct and Teamwork
- Uphold CELUO’s safeguarding, gender sensitivity, confidentiality, and Do-No-Harm principles at all times.
- Model respectful, inclusive, and non-violent conduct in all interactions.
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with CELUO staff, facilitators, and community partners.
- Perform any other relevant duties assigned by the Project Coordinator.
4. Key Outputs / Result Areas
- Peacebuilding activities effectively supported at community level.
- Timely logistical and facilitation support for trainings, dialogues, and meetings.
- Accurate and timely submission of activity plans and reports.
- Improved coordination and follow-up with WaPeTe structures and Community Facilitators.
- Contribution to qualitative learning through stories, observations, and feedback from the field.
5. Required Competencies and Qualifications
Experience and Skills
- At least 1 year proven hands-on experience in rural peacebuilding, community cohesion, community development, monitoring & evaluation, youth or environmental related activities.
- Strong report writing and analytical skills.
- Strong understanding of local community dynamics and governance structures.
- Good communication skills in Shona and good working English & excellent understanding of the local Ndau culture.
Ability to ride a motorbike; with a valid driver’s licence.
Education
-At least a certificate or diploma in community development, peace studies, conflict transformation, education, Forum theatre & youth work, natural resource governance and leadership or a related field is an added advantage.
-At least 5 O levels including English Language.
- A university degree is an added advantage.
