If we don’t document our history, we lose it. And that includes what’s on our plates. 🥘📜

We are proud to share a glimpse behind the scenes of a groundbreaking project by Amagugu International Heritage Center, supported by the British Council, to document the indigenous foods of Matobo.

This isn’t just about cooking; it’s about archiving the knowledge, the rituals, and the flavors that have sustained our community for generations.

The Dream Team: To tell this story right, we collaborated with the best in the game: 🤝

Together, we are ensuring that these recipes don’t just stay in the past, but inspire the future.

Bringing the Flavors of the Past into the Future 🍲✨

We are incredibly excited to officially launch our latest project: The Documentation of Long-Lost African Cuisines Using Art and Videography, in collaboration with African Food Revolution and Magriza Made Me Cook Magriza Made Me Cook, supported by the British Council

In the heart of Matobo Ward 17, there are recipes that tell the story of our people—dishes that have sustained generations but are slowly fading from our daily tables. We believe that if we lose our food, we lose a piece of our soul.

What is this project about? We are embarking on a journey to find these "long-lost" traditional cuisines. But we aren't just writing recipes down. We are collaborating with elders (our custodians of knowledge) and young creatives to capture these foods through: 🎥 High-quality Documentaries 🎨 Artistic Curation & Exhibitions

This is where heritage meets innovation. We are bridging the gap between the grandmother cooking by the fire and the young creative looking for inspiration. Whether you are a foodie, an academic, or just someone who loves a good meal, this journey is for you.

Join us as we rediscover the taste of home.

Tell us: What is one traditional meal you haven't eaten in years but wish you could taste again? Let us know in the comments! 👇

My Beautiful Home | Painted Houses of Matobo — Featured on CNN Inside Africa 🇿🇼🌍

For over 11 years, My Beautiful Home (MBH) has worked with the Matobo community to protect an ancient house-painting tradition while transforming it into a platform for tourism, education, enterprise, and cultural pride.

Now featured on CNN Inside Africa (airing for the past two weeks), this documentary tells the story of how heritage, when community-led, becomes a driver of sustainable development.

The film brings together voices that have supported and championed this journey:

David Coltart, Mayor of Bulawayo

Véronique Attala, Founding Director – Ekhaya-Gaia

Community and Ward leadership

Guillaume William Ripaud, Director – Alliance Française de Bulawayo

Nkanyeziyethu Malunga - Fashion Designer

Leeroy Brittain Aka BOW - award winning mural artist

At Amagugu International Heritage Centre, we believe that living heritage matters — not only as memory, but as a future for communities.

📺 Watch the documentary and celebrate Matobo’s creativity, resilience, and leadership.

Tomorrow we step into a world where fashion, heritage, and indigenous knowledge meet!

Join us at Icansi Fashion Fest 2025 as we celebrate the beauty of African couture, the wisdom of our fruit trees, and the power of cultural storytelling on the runway.

📍 Tables and Pins, Corner 12th Ave & 5th Street (Former SPAR)
🗓️ Friday, 28 November
⏰ 6:00PM – 8:00PM

This is more than an event but it’s a reminder that our identity, our style, and even our future are rooted in the knowledge of our land. From the colours, the textures, to the fruits that shaped our childhoods… everything tells a story worth celebrating.

Come and witness “A Fruity Harvest of Style”, where indigenous fruits take centre stage in fashion, art, and culture. Let’s show up, dress up, and honour what makes us uniquely African.

Amagugu had the honor to attend a two-day Foodways Workshop held from 20–21 November at the UNESCO Regional Office in Harare.
The meeting brought together ministries, universities, cultural institutions, tourism bodies, and community representatives to strengthen Zimbabwe’s Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) ecosystem. Together, we examined UNESCO’s conventions with a particular focus on the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

We reviewed Southern African and national ICH elements, explored Zimbabwe’s ongoing safeguarding initiatives, and discussed pathways for enactment, inventorying, and nomination processes.
Most importantly, the workshop concluded with a united commitment: to work closely with communities in documenting, safeguarding, and advancing the listing of Zimbabwean Foodways as vital living heritage.

"Bridging Generations through Heritage"

Last Friday learners from Dominican Convent immersed themselves in the rich world of Ndebele artefacts, language, indigenous foods, basketry, and storytelling at Amagugu International Heritage Centre. Through touch, taste, and dialogue, they experienced the living heartbeat of our culture where knowledge is not just taught, but felt.
