On the 21st of November 2025, Green Crescent Zimbabwe participated in the EmpowerFest 2025 Million Memory Project Zimbabwe (MMPZ). It took place at 11th Street Grounds, Makokoba, on 21 November from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
EmpowerFest is a youth-driven annual event that celebrates and strengthens young people’s health, resilience, and empowerment. The day featured interactive discussions, youth-led sessions, exhibitions, and performances.
The setup followed a tent and exhibition-style format, where participating organizations set up their tents or booths to showcase their work and engage directly with participants as they moved around the festival space. This allowed for more personal and interactive exchanges between organizations and young people, rather than a formal presentation setup.
Young people in Bulawayo today face intersecting challenges that extend beyond HIV and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). Issues such as mental health struggles, unemployment, lack of financial literacy, substance abuse, and limited platforms for innovation continue to hinder their growth and wellbeing.
The Empower Festival (EmpowerFest) seeks to create a space that bridges this gap, where learning meets fun, and empowerment meets action. This end-of-year youth empowerment and wellness festival will blend learning, entertainment, and inspiration through activities like a Colour Run, open discussions, youth exhibitions, and music/arts performances.
EmpowerFest provides a platform for youth to access information, build connections, and celebrate creativity, resilience, and innovation. It is a pilot-scale initiative with a vision to grow into a national signature event that amplifies young voices and drives sustainable impact

Objectives
1. Inspire and educate youth on SRHR, mental health, financial literacy, and entrepreneurship.
2. Promote wellness and resilience through interactive, youth-friendly activities.
3. Strengthen partnerships between youth, community stakeholders, corporates, and service providers.
4. Test a festival model for sustainability and scale, gathering data and lessons for future editions.

Key Activities
• Colour Run: A vibrant wellness event to promote physical activity and unity among youth: with the message “Colour Your Future)
• Open Discussions: Short, interactive talks on SRHR, mental health, innovation, and financial literacy.
• Youth Expo & Innovation Hub: Showcasing youth-led projects, businesses, and community initiatives.

The workshop was attended by Mr. M Dube Ward 25 Councilor who discussed the challenges at community level.

The workshop was opened by Mr. L. Moyo who is the director of Agape College. According to Mr. Moyo, the objectives of the workshop were to raise awareness on effects of taking drugs both to students and parents. He emphasized the need to engage the community saying by engaging them we promote a systematic prevention plan to this complex problem.

Mrs. B Sulumbu, Psychologist at Solace Mental Health tackled several topics such as substance abuse, substance use disorders, addiction and rehabilitation. She highlighted that use of drugs can lead to mental illness or death hence the need to stay away completely. Rehabilitation can be costly to one’s family because it’s very expensive in Zimbabwe. Students must understand that prevention is better than cure and some of the damages are irreversible.

Ms. Ndebele a representative of Green Crescent, a counsellor at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) said help can be given through educating students, teachers, parents and community on how to handle hard situations they may be facing and find strategies to cope. She also said Green Crescent is working on implementing comprehensive assessments and therapeutic management programs for students on drugs through school guidance and counselling department.

Mr. T Nkomo of Grace Family Church said taking drugs leads to addiction posing a threat to health and safety, while creating problems for one’s family and public.

Mrs. Mayers of Zimbabwe Psychologists Association (ZPA) gave a clear indication on approaches or interactions that can be vented to deal with drug problems. She spoke about babies born by parents using drugs with most of them living on drugs from birth in order to survive. The babies are born already addicted to drugs.
