"This has happened in my ecosystem…!"

When 4 cooking huts in our community were tragically burnt down in the night, our brilliant, vibrant participant Samie used a surprising word to describe the neighborhood crisis. She reminded us that everything affecting our community happens within our shared "ecosystem."

Her unconventional comment was the perfect bridge into the recap session for our, Living Organisms themed camp carried out from the 13th–25th of April. During the camp our 8- to 13-year-old beneficiaries explored, observed, took field trips, experimented and came out with practical knowledge on how different organisms i.e. animals, plants, fungi and bacteria keep earth alive.

Now, weeks after the camp ended, the children are still harvesting fresh mushrooms from a fruiting mushroom bucket they have been maintaining! This practical model keeps their learning alive, turning lessons into lifelong knowledge.

For us this is not just about education and skills development; we are activating a generation to protect and care for their environment.

Mission success: Water Conservation Camp Complete! 🌊
Last week, we officially closed the doors on our 5th themed camp under the Overcoming Barriers Project. It was a journey of exploration, experimentation, and immense growth!

Days 8 and 9 were a flurry of activity! The children explored the ethics of respecting our freshwater sources and spent hours refining their presentations for the grand finale the exhibition before the community.

Why the Exhibition Matters (Phase 3: Discovery)
Exhibitions are a cornerstone of phase 3 of our curriculum. They provide a platform where our beneficiaries demonstrate their skills to an audience, thus advancing the Mukundi mission in three vital ways:

• Speaking publicly enhances our children’s confidence. More importantly, it shows the community that our beneficiaries are not limited thus, fostering a supportive environment for their integration into society.
• In many rural communities like ours, children are rarely the ones providing education. By teaching adults about water conservation, our beneficiaries are shifting the traditional mindset and being truly listened to.
• This impact doesn't end at our center. Our beneficiaries will now lead co-curricular clubs in their own schools, ensuring the seeds of change reach far beyond our immediate group.

We are so grateful for your continued support throughout this 10-day journey. Together, we aren't just teaching conservation; we are building a new generation of leaders.

What comes next?
We are already preparing for our next camp in April 2026, Living organisms🌿🐜
To make this next experience just as impactful, we need your support. If you want to be a part of this journey as a partner, donor, or volunteer, please contact us today.

On day 4, as we concluded on phase 1, the children were tasked with researching: "How is water used and how does it go waste?"

Their responses were phenomenal, drawing attention to water waste in their homes and community. (Though we had a good laugh when one child, Tich, declared, "We waste water when we bath!" 😂). Overall, these presentations made transitioning to Phase 2 (adaptation) much easier, as we moved immediately to practical, actionable steps against water wastage.

💧 Adaptation to curb consumption
Today on day 5 we focused entirely on activities related to reducing water consumption. This learning took place through practical hands-on activities from the dedicated spaces set up to allow the children to familiarize themselves with water conservation, an essential component of phase 2 of our curriculum.

The children’s key learning from the sessions?
• To only make use of the required amount of water.
• To do away with common water-wasting habits.
• To practice and implement water reduction techniques, such as mulching and drip irrigation.
By experimenting with practical solutions, our beneficiaries are internalizing the skills needed to create positive change in their lives.

The start of day 2 of our water conservation themed camp was nothing short of perfect! We woke up to refreshing rain, and it gave us the perfect mystery to solve, “The puddles are forming... but where do they go?” 🤔

🔬 Our deep dive into the water cycle on day 2
The rain was a happy coincidence for our session on the water cycle! Our young scientists explored how nature constantly purifies and redistributes water.
Key Takeaways for the children:
• Water is precious;
• Water is finite (even though it cycles);
• Water must be conserved.
We also explored global water availability and distribution on Earth, helping the children understand just how unique and valuable their water resources are.

Day 3: Independent application & redefining phase wrap-up
Still concluding the foundational redefine phase of our curriculum, today was all about doing and applying knowledge independently! Our focus was on creating adaptable and challenging learning opportunities through:
• Personalized Tasks: Activities were varied to suit individual needs, ensuring everyone hit the learning objectives.
• Enjoyable Challenges: The explores tackled fun problems and used prompts to demonstrate models of the water cycle.
• Independent Application: They identified the steps and materials needed to demonstrate the water cycle themselves, fostering true independence in learning!

Oh, what impactful days of exploration! Stay tuned for more as we now transition from redefining to Phase 2: Adaptation of our curriculum!
