Informative Thursdays | Children’s Rights & Responsibilities 🇿🇼
Children have rights, but understanding those rights also means understanding the responsibilities that come with living peacefully and respectfully with others.
This week, Youth Peace Ambassadors (YPA) highlights two important principles under the Constitution of Zimbabwe: the right of children to be protected from recruitment into armed forces or participation in armed conflict, and the responsibility of everyone to promote peace, avoid violence and respect human life.
🕊️ 1. The right not to be recruited into an armed force or take part in armed conflict
Simply put, children should not be used as soldiers or involved in armed conflict.
Childhood should be a time for learning, growing, playing and developing in a safe environment. A child must not be forced, pressured or manipulated into joining an armed group or participating in activities that expose them to armed conflict.
This protection is particularly important because children are more vulnerable to manipulation and exploitation. Being involved in conflict can interfere with their education, safety, development and future.
🇿🇼 What could this mean in the Zimbabwean context?
Zimbabwe has experienced periods of political and social conflict in its history. The lesson for young people today is that children should never be treated as tools for political or violent purposes.
For example:
• A child should not be pressured to participate in violent political activities because of their family's political views.
• Young people should not be encouraged to carry weapons or participate in violent confrontations.
• Schools and communities should remain safe spaces where children can learn and express themselves without being exposed to violence.
• Adults have a responsibility to protect children when conflicts or tensions arise in communities.
Protecting children from conflict does not mean preventing them from understanding social or political issues. Children and young people have the right to learn, ask questions, express their views appropriately and participate peacefully in their communities.
🤝 2. The responsibility to promote peace, avoid violence and value human life
Rights come with responsibilities.
Having the right to live safely means we also have a responsibility not to intentionally put others in danger or respond to disagreements through violence.
Promoting peace can start with very simple actions: listening to others, respecting differences, resolving disagreements through dialogue, refusing to bully others and speaking up when we see violence or abuse.
🇿🇼 Examples in our communities:
Imagine two students at a Zimbabwean school have a disagreement. Instead of fighting, they can involve a teacher, counsellor or trusted adult and resolve the matter through discussion.
If young people disagree about politics, religion, sport or other issues, disagreement does not have to become hostility. We can disagree with someone's opinion without attacking the person.
In communities, peace can also mean:
• Rejecting bullying and intimidation.
• Refusing to participate in fights or violent confrontations.
• Reporting situations where children may be at risk.
• Encouraging dialogue when disagreements arise.
• Respecting people from different backgrounds and communities.
• Speaking out against violence instead of celebrating it.
• Supporting peaceful solutions to community problems.
🌍 Why does this matter?
A peaceful society is not created only by governments, police or community leaders. Young people are also important peacebuilders.
When children grow up in environments where violence is normalised, it can affect their education, relationships, confidence and future opportunities. But when children are protected and taught peaceful ways of resolving disagreements, they can become adults who contribute positively to their communities.
Peace therefore begins with everyday choices.
Choose dialogue over violence.
Choose respect over hatred.
Choose protection over exploitation.
Choose peace. 🕊️
