Despite their numerous benefits to humanity, social media platforms have brought new challenges on the national security landscape. Irresponsible use of social media has resulted in social vices such as violence, terrorism, child po*******hy and a myriad of other social ills. To counter the social media-induced threats, most nations have resorted to strict regulatory frameworks that criminalise and penalise some of the social media actions that are viewed as threats to national security. These laws address digital abuse:

Data Protection Act
This act criminalizes the use of information and communication technology to commit online violence, such as sending intimate images without consent ("revenge po*******hy") and recording genitalia and buttocks beneath clothing without consent ("upskirting").
Section 164B of the Act
This section addresses cyberbullying, which is defined as intentionally generating and sending data messages or posting on electronic media to intimidate, harass, or threaten another person.
Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act
This act gives the public the right to request correction of misrepresented personal information and prevents the unauthorized collection, use, or disclosure of personal information.

Freedom of speech and expression is a cornerstone of democracy and a foundation of what we hold as important as a society.
However, it should not imply freedom from consequences.
We seem to have lost accountability for the way we wield our right to speak and express.

Many, when exercising their right to free speech and expression are spewing anger and hatred at another person and the “conversation” turns into verbal abuse.

That sounds so extreme…abuse, right?

Name-calling, insults, and threatening language are all forms of verbal abuse.
While individuals have the right to express their opinions and beliefs freely, when those opinions are expressed in a way that is intended to harm or intimidate others, it crosses the line and becomes abusive.

Day 16

The activism continues…

Secondary victimization (also known as post crime victimization or double victimization) relates to further victimization following on from the original victimization. For example, victim blaming, inappropriate post-assault behaviour or language by colleagues, family, medical personnel or other organizations with which the victim has contact may further add to the victim’s suffering. Victims may also experience secondary victimization by justice system personnel upon entering the criminal justice system. Victims will lose time, suffer reductions in income, often be ignored by family, subordinates, friends, courthouse staff and will remain uninformed about updates in the case such as hearing postponements, to the extent that their frustration and confusion will turn to apathy and a declining willingness to further participate in system proceedings.

What’s going on in an abuser’s brain that motivates them to be this way? Can it be written off as a disease or attributed as a side-effect to mental illness?
In short, no. Mental illness doesn’t cause abuse. Plenty of people with mental health issues do not abuse others. An abuser who lives with any mental illness simply has two issues—mental illness and propensity to abuse their partner. Still, abusers often share psychological traits, something else to be aware of when evaluating people.
