Livestock farming involves managing various treatments and diseases to ensure animal health and productivity. Here are some key aspects:

- Common diseases:
- Foot-and-mouth disease
- East Coast fever
- Blackleg
- Brucellosis
- Mastitis
- Treatments and control measures:
- Vaccinations
- Antibiotics
- Deworming
- Nutritional supplements
- Biosecurity protocols
- Prevention strategies:
- Regular veterinary check-ups
- Proper sanitation and hygiene
- Vector control (e.g., ticks, flies)
- Quarantine and testing for new animals

Specific treatments and diseases may vary depending on the livestock type (cattle, sheep, goats, etc.) and region (Zimbabwe's climate and disease prevalence).

Today, let's focus on East Coast fever, a major tick-borne disease in Zimbabwe. January disease is another name for East Coast fever in some regions.
In Zimbabwe, it's a significant threat to cattle. East Coast fever (January disease) is caused by Theileria parva, transmitted by ticks. Key aspects:
- Symptoms:Fever, swollen lymph nodes, respiratory distress, and high mortality in cattle.
- Transmission:Mainly through R. appendiculatus ticks.
- Control: Tick control, vaccination, and treating infected animals.

Zimbabwe's climate favors tick populations, making prevention crucial. Would you like more on prevention strategies or impact on local farming? 🐄 What's your specific interest - prevention, treatment, or impact on cattle?

Did you know, Penstrep is a combination antibiotic commonly used in veterinary medicine to treat bacterial infections in cattle. It typically contains penicillin and streptomycin.

Uses
1. Respiratory infections: Penstrep can be used to treat pneumonia and other respiratory infections caused by susceptible bacteria.
2. Mastitis: Penstrep may be used to treat mastitis, an infection of the udder, in dairy cattle.
3. Foot infections: Penstrep can be used to treat foot infections, such as foot rot, caused by susceptible bacteria.
4. Other bacterial infections: Penstrep may be used to treat other bacterial infections, such as septicemia or abscesses, caused by susceptible bacteria.

Administration
1. Injection: Penstrep is typically administered via injection, either intramuscularly (IM) or subcutaneously (SC).
2. Dosage: The dosage and duration of treatment will depend on the specific condition being treated, the age and weight of the animal, and the veterinarian's recommendations.

Precautions
1. Withdrawal periods: It's essential to follow the recommended withdrawal periods for meat and milk to ensure that antibiotic residues do not exceed acceptable limits.
2. Veterinary guidance: Penstrep should only be used under the guidance of a veterinarian, as improper use can lead to antibiotic resistance and other issues.
3. Monitoring: Cattle should be monitored for signs of adverse reactions, such as allergic reactions or gastrointestinal upset.

It's crucial to use antibiotics responsibly and follow proper treatment protocols to ensure the health and well-being of cattle and minimize the risk of antibiotic resistance.

18/06/2025

Raising chickens for meat, also known as broiler production, involves providing suitable housing, nutrition, and care to produce a healthy and marketable bird. Key factors include selecting the right breed, providing adequate space and shelter, offering proper feed and water, and managing health and hygiene.
Housing and Space:
Brooder:
Provide a warm and draft-free brooder for baby chicks (up to 4-6 weeks old), with a heat lamp or other heat source, and adequate space to move around.

Grow-out pen:
As they grow, transfer chicks to a larger pen or coop with at least 2-4 square feet per bird, depending on the breed and whether they have access to a yard or pasture.
Pasture-raised:
If raising chickens on pasture, ensure they have access to a safe and enclosed area with shade, and consider using a chicken tractor to move them regularly to fresh ground.

Watch the space this week for a deeper insight on broiler production.
