🚨 COMMUNITY ALERT: EBOLA AWARENESS AND PREVENTION 🚨

As Ebola cases continue to escalate in neighboring regions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, communities living near border areas with Zambia are encouraged to remain vigilant and informed. While no cause for panic exists, preparedness and awareness are essential to protect ourselves, our families, and our communities.

Ebola is a serious viral disease that spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person or contaminated materials. Early symptoms may include fever, severe headache, muscle pain, weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, and unexplained bleeding.

Community members are encouraged to practice regular handwashing with soap and clean water, avoid direct contact with sick individuals, and immediately report anyone showing symptoms consistent with Ebola to the nearest health facility. Travelers arriving from affected areas should cooperate with health screening measures and follow guidance from health authorities.

Rumors and misinformation can increase fear and confusion. Always seek information from trusted health sources and local health officials. Community leaders, schools, churches, and organizations are encouraged to share accurate information and support awareness activities.

Together, through vigilance, hygiene, early reporting, and community cooperation, we can help prevent the spread of Ebola and keep our communities safe. Protect yourself, protect your family, and protect your community.

📊 Zambia Strengthens Inclusion of Refugees and Stateless Persons in National Data
The Zambia Statistics Agency (ZamStats), the Office of the Commissioner for Refugees (COR) under the Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security (MoHAIS), and the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) 🤝. This agreement ensures that forcibly displaced individuals and stateless persons in Zambia are included in the national census and other key surveys.
By integrating displaced populations into national statistical systems, the MoU strengthens Zambia’s commitment to protecting their rights and responding to their unique needs 🛡️. It underscores the importance of collecting accurate and inclusive data that reflects the realities of everyone living in Zambia—especially those who have been forced to leave their homes.
This initiative will help the government, UNHCR, and humanitarian partners plan better and deliver essential services more effectively 🏥📚. Ultimately, it promotes a more inclusive society that recognizes, values, and supports every person in the country 🌍💙.

Parliamentary Committee engages UNHCR to inform the review of legislation related to refugee protection and inclusion in Zambia

Today, the Government of the Republic of Zambia 🇿🇲, through the Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs, Human Rights, and Governance, engaged with the UNHCR Zambia Multi-Country Office (ZAMCO) on matters concerning the protection, rights, and welfare of refugees and asylum-seekers in Zambia. The engagement reflects Government’s continued leadership and oversight in advancing inclusive and rights-based policies for forcibly displaced populations.

During the session, led by UNHCR’s Officer-in-Charge, Ms. Helen Mebrahtu, UNHCR shared technical insights and recommendations in support of Government-led efforts to strengthen the legal and policy framework governing refugee protection and inclusion. UNHCR commended the Government for its longstanding open-door policy, which demonstrates Zambia’s commitment to shared humanity and its role as a safe haven for those fleeing conflict and persecution 🤝.

Discussions with the Committee underscored the importance of accelerating policy and legal reforms, alongside the implementation of programmes that promote refugee inclusion and self-reliance. Emphasis was placed on ensuring that protection is complemented by opportunities for refugees to contribute meaningfully to national and local development efforts.

This engagement highlights Parliament’s critical role in shaping policies that uphold human rights, dignity, and social cohesion. It further reinforces the collective responsibility of Government and partners to ensure that Zambia’s refugee response remains compassionate, inclusive, and sustainable 🕊️.

Together, Government, Parliament, and partners continue to strengthen Zambia’s legacy as a beacon of hope and regional solidarity in the face of forced displacement 🌍.
