Today, we had the privilege and honor of hosting students from The Copperbelt University Evangelical Church Campus Fellowship at Sunsuntila Orphanage Day Centre,

The student's campus fellowship interacted with the children and acknowledged the organization's milestone in providing basic services that have greatly impacted the lives of these children, offering them hope and a chance to regain their footing.

In return, the students shared the Gospel of Christ with the children and the entire community through their actions and prayers.

Their presence fostered a sense of belonging among the children, evident in the joyful atmosphere created through games, sports, songs, and one-on-one interactions.

Furthermore, the students' campus fellowship donated assorted items, including much-needed food, which will significantly contribute to providing opportunities for the vulnerable children who rely on donations from well-wishers.

We remain grateful to the students' fellowship for being an answer to the children's prayers at Sunsuntila Day Care Centre.

Shalom shalom.

Victor Braun School hosts 7 mothers from Chinenke at the Respite House

In order to continue providing quality, inclusive education in a holistic form that takes into account the needs of all children, regardless of their background or severity of their disabilities, Victor Braun School has welcomed mothers and their children at its respite house. The mothers, together with their children with multiple disabilities, will be at the centre to undergo basic training on strategies to improve the well-being of their children, including toileting, nutritional support and basic feeding techniques. The coming of mothers to the respite house affirms SSHJM-IDP commitment to ensuring that access to education extends further than just academic learning, but also the improvement of ways of living by creating alternative forms of learning in attaining an inclusive education right into the family life, including a child with disability.

SSHJM celebrate the feast of Father Victor Braun in Mbala

Today the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary celebrated the feast of Father Victor Braun which falls on 18th May every year. The feast included a brief background of Fr Victor Braun and how he founded the SSHJM congregation back in 1852.

The establishment of the congregation came at a critical juncture when the rights and dignity of vulnerable populations were violated.

Sharing the charism of the congregation, the local leader, Sister Cecilia, mentioned that the four pillars of virtue "love, compassion, conversion, and reparation" continue to define and shape the works of the congregation today.

The feast included some form of entertainment, interaction on what the day means for ordinary staffs at SSHJM as well as a full mass that cemented the day.

The day serves as a reminder of the duty to be "repairers of the heart of Jesus and Mary" by being an answer to God’s flock, thereby reliving the legacy left by Father Victor Braun.

Archbishop Telesphore George Mpundu dies at age 78.

SSHJM-IDP mourn the death of Archbishop Telesphore George Mpundu who has died at the age of 78 in Lusaka. His social emancipation stance particularly during the HIV/AIDs pandemic of the 1990s when he was Bishop of Mbala (now Mpika) will be a living legacy for the organisation.

Archbishop Mpundu's call for justice for people affected by the HIV/AIDs would later cross path with Sister Mary Costello and Sister Anne Griffin of SSHJM congregation who were on the fact-finding mission in 1991 for service provision to orphans whose parents had died prematurely from the disease.

At his request and approval, in 1991, SSHJM led by the two sisters would later establish a day orphanage center called Susuntila, a name given by Archbishop Telesphore George Mpundu meaning "to comfort or cradle a baby".

It is a name that was marvelled by Sr Griffin as recorded in Gallagher's book called Sunsuntila: The story of SSHJM in Zambia:

"We all thought that this was appropriate, as that is exactly what we wanted to do - comfort the bereaved orphans and set up a centre that would be an example to others."

Today Archbishop Mpundu legacy continues to live on at SSHJM-IDP through the Sunsuntila Orphanage Day Centre.

May His Blessed Soul Rest In Peace 🙏

The event included the full mass at the centre signifying the importance of faith and work in accordance with human holistic development. It is during this event that SSHJM-IDP Director Mr Wesley Singogo took time to offer a brief background of the skills workshop and how it fit into the overall objective of SSHJM in healing the wounded communities by improving their wellbeing through the provision of quality education for all. As rightfully puts by Fr Chungu, the skills workshop remains a dwelling place of refuge for vulnerable children especially learners with disabilities to acquire skills for the betterment of their livelihood.

We are going organic 🧪 🌿 as we respond to the cry of the earth 🌎

For too long, the push for high yields has come at a heavy cost. Chemical fertilizers haven't just drained farmers' pockets; they’ve stripped our land of its life, leaving behind eroded and tired soil.

But at SSHJM-IDP, we believe there is a better way.
Our Livelihood experts recently headed to Chisitu village and Mwamba village in Mbala District to lead a hands-on training with small-scale farmers. The focus? Bio-paste and organic fertilizers.

These two support groups are now our "Green Flagships," proving that we can produce incredible yields while preserving the environment. It’s time to stop fighting nature and start working with it.

Debrief winds up Unicef Zambia visit

The day concluded with a reflection and outlook of the End Child Marriages (ECM) Programme. Led by two highly motivated and expertise in child protection Emelia and Edwin, the debrief brought together government departments and our partner Access to Health Zambia implementing the End Child Marriages Programme in Mbala.

The meeting was a vital space to share feedback and align our efforts. The UNICEF team highlighted three game-changers for our mission:

✅️ importance of linkages and collaboration,
✅️data driven 📊 in making informed decision on the fight against child marriage
✅️exploration of new innovations 💡 that makes our works easier and more results oriented via documenting outcomes of our interventions.

is what will promote ownership of the End Child Marriages Programme amongst adolescents and communities and this debrief summed up much of the direction to be taken.

SSHJM-IDP remain grateful and committed to partners like UNICEF that have come on-board to support our mission in building a better tomorrow together ❤️.

A Landmark Day for Child Protection in Mpulungu! 🇿🇲

SSHJM-IDP, in partnership with our dedicated government counterparts, was honored to host a high-level monitoring and familiarization tour with the UNICEF Zambia team.

We were privileged to welcome Ms. Emelia Allan (Chief of Child Protection) and Edwin Mumba (Child Protection Specialist on Prevention of Violence Against Children) to witness the impact of our collaborative work on the ground.

🤝 Strength in Unity
The visit showcased the powerful synergy between SSHJM-IDP and the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services, Zambia Ministry of Health Zambia Ministry of Education- Zambia and Ministry of Education. Together, we are fighting to end Child Marriage and Adolescent Pregnancy by supplementing government efforts with grassroots action.

🎤 Voices of the Future
At Niamukolo School, the UNICEF team met with the incredible members of the Adolescents Rise and Shine Club. These young advocates are the frontline of justice for girls' rights! One standout advocate even earned the nickname "Future Minister of Finance" after her brilliant analysis of how medical costs for drugs for syphilis which has become a prominent infection amongst adolescents impact the economy negatively through prioritisation of health care aganist industrial investment.

📚 Education & Hope
The day concluded at Mupata, where children shared moving testimonies of how this project helped them return to the classroom. Their stories are a living reminder of why we do this work.
The UNICEF team commended the deep commitment shown to supporting girls and local communities through collaboration with traditional leaders.

We move forward with renewed energy in our quest to End Child Marriage NOW! ✊✨
