UPND Warns Against Backdated Resignation Letters by Independent Candidates

The United Party for National Development (UPND) has raised concern over what it describes as backdated resignation letters submitted by some independent candidates who were previously party members.

In an official communication dated May 29, 2026, UPND Secretary General Hon. Batuke Imenda stated that the party had become aware of cases where individuals seeking election as independent candidates submitted resignation letters only after learning that they were required to have resigned from the party before filing their nominations.

According to the statement, the party will recognize the date on which the resignation letters were actually received rather than the dates indicated on the letters themselves.

The Secretary General emphasized that the resignations were submitted after nominations had already taken place and therefore did not satisfy the requirement that candidates resign from the party before filing nomination papers.

The statement further warned party officials against altering official records to validate the resignations.

"Those party officials backdating date stamps to validate resignation letters risk being cited for fraud," Imenda cautioned.

FORMER MANYINGA COUNCIL CHAIRPERSON DISPUTES INCLUSION IN PETITION AGAINST INDEPENDENT CANDIDATES.

A former Manyinga Council Chairperson and aspiring independent parliamentary candidate for Manyinga Constituency has expressed disappointment after being listed in a High Court petition challenging the eligibility of independents.

Henry Sakuwaha said he was dismayed that Isaac Mwanza and a consortium of civil society organizations included his name among 101 aspiring independent candidates alleged to have failed to resign from their political parties before filing nomination documents.

Mr Sakuwaha alleged that the civil society organizations did not conduct proper investigations.

He said he submitted his resignation letter to the UPND Secretariat Headquarters on 18 May 2026, with copies sent to the provincial and district administrations.

Former civic leader further noted that the Electoral Commission of Zambia did not list a party resignation letter among the required filing documents for independent candidates.

In his resignation letter dated 18 May 2026, Sakuwaha stated that he had been a UPND member for 25 years, ending his membership on the same date. He thanked the party leadership and the President for the privilege to serve the people and wished the party well in its future endeavors.

The matter came to light after Sakuwaha and 100 others were named in a High Court petition questioning the eligibility of parliamentary candidates contesting as independents in the 2026 general elections while allegedly maintaining ties to political parties.

Efforts to obtain a comment from the Manyinga District UPND Chairperson were unsuccessful, as his phone was switched off at press time.

πŸ“·ALL UPND PARTY MEMBERS WHO WENT INDEPENDENT SHOULD WITHDRAW - MUFALALI

The United Party for National Development (UPND) has urged all party members who were not adopted and are now contesting as independent candidates to withdraw from the race and respect party rules.

UPND Chairperson for Elections and Campaigns Likando Mufalali said the party remains committed to enforcing discipline and respecting its adoption process.

Mufalali said although independent candidates have a constitutional right to contest elections, party members are expected to follow internal procedures and decisions.

He warned that members who ignore the directive and continue contesting as independents risk facing disciplinary action from the ruling party.

Mufalali added that candidates who proceed with independent bids will be treated as political opponents, even if they continue supporting President Hakainde Hichilema during campaigns.
