Two Die in Fatal Road Traffic Accident Near Mugabe Village
Two people have died following a fatal road traffic accident that occurred today at around 17:30 hours near the Mugabe Village turnoff along the Mwami Border Road in Chipata District.
Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba told Breeze FM News that the accident involved a motor vehicle—a Howo truck and trailer—belonging to Yaza Investment.
The truck was being driven by Lingson Ziwa, aged 51, of Chiswa Trading Center in Senior Chief Nzamane’s area. He escaped unhurt.
Also involved was a motorbike, which was extensively damaged. It was being ridden by James Mbao, age unknown, of Molosiyo Village in Malawi. He is believed to be a Malawian national.
Mbao sustained fatal head injuries and suspected fractured legs, and died on the spot.
The accident also involved a pedestrian, Florence Nkosi, aged 9, of Mugabe Village in Chief Mpezeni’s area of Chipata. She sustained fatal head injuries and died on the spot.
Mr. Mweemba explained that the accident happened when the driver of the truck, due to excessive speed, swerved to the right side of the road and hit the motorbike rider who was joining the main road. The vehicle then struck the pedestrian.
The two bodies have since been deposited at Chipata Central Hospital awaiting postmortem examination.
