We commend the Zambia Police Service and the Department of National Parks & Wildlife (DNPW) for the successful recovery of three young birds that were being kept illegally in Mbala District.

Initial reports suggested they may be vulture chicks; however, further identification indicates otherwise. Regardless of species, the illegal capture and possession of any wild bird is a serious offence under Zambian law and a concern for wildlife conservation.

Vultures, in particular, play a critical role in maintaining healthy ecosystems by removing carcasses and helping to prevent the likelyhood of spread of disease. Across Africa, many vulture species are facing severe threats causing them to be on the verge of extinction.

This incident is an important reminder of the need for continued vigilance in protecting all wildlife. Every rescue represents an opportunity to strengthen enforcement and raise awareness.

BirdWatch Zambia remains committed to supporting efforts to conserve Zambia’s BirdLife.

We encourage members of the public to report any suspected wildlife crime to the relevant authorities.

World Environment Day Reflection: Communities and Conservation for a Healthier Planet

Every year, thousands of migratory birds travel vast distances across continents, relying on healthy wetlands such as the Kafue Flats to rest, feed, and survive their journeys.

Last week, BirdWatch Zambia engaged community representatives from Nalubamba, Mungaila, and Muwezwa Chiefdoms in a series of awareness workshops focused on migratory bird conservation. Together, we explored the importance of migratory birds, the role of the Kafue Flats in supporting these species, and practical actions communities can take to help protect them.

One message emerged strongly from both workshops: conservation starts with awareness. Participants emphasised the need for greater community sensitisation, stronger protection of important bird habitats, and increased engagement of young people in conservation efforts.

We extend our appreciation to all participants for their insights, enthusiasm, and commitment to safeguarding the Kafue Flats for both people and wildlife.

We also sincerely thank BirdLife International Africa for their support in making these workshops possible and advancing the conservation of migratory birds and their habitats in Zambia.

🇿🇲 Zambia has officially launched the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) III, marking an important milestone for biodiversity conservation.

BirdWatch Zambia was honoured to be part of this important occasion and contribute to the NBSAP revision process. We were privileged to hear from the Guest of Honour, Honourable Sylvia Masebo, Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, whose remarks reaffirmed the importance of collective action in safeguarding Zambia’s biodiversity.

As highlighted in our speech during the launch, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting the implementation of the NBSAP through research, biodiversity monitoring, environmental education, advocacy, and partnerships.

We sincerely thank BirdLife International and the Darwin Initiative for supporting our participation in the NBSAP III revision process.

We also congratulate the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, cooperating partners, colleagues, and all stakeholders involved in developing this important strategy.

We look forward to working together in supporting the implementation of the NBSAP.
