🇿🇲 Zambia has officially launched the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) III, marking an important milestone for biodiversity conservation.

BirdWatch Zambia was honoured to be part of this important occasion and contribute to the NBSAP revision process. We were privileged to hear from the Guest of Honour, Honourable Sylvia Masebo, Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, whose remarks reaffirmed the importance of collective action in safeguarding Zambia’s biodiversity.

As highlighted in our speech during the launch, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting the implementation of the NBSAP through research, biodiversity monitoring, environmental education, advocacy, and partnerships.

We sincerely thank BirdLife International and the Darwin Initiative for supporting our participation in the NBSAP III revision process.

We also congratulate the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, cooperating partners, colleagues, and all stakeholders involved in developing this important strategy.

We look forward to working together in supporting the implementation of the NBSAP.

Happy World Migratory Bird Day! 🌍

Today, we join the global community in celebrating World Migratory Bird Day, a special day dedicated to raising awareness about migratory birds and the importance of protecting the habitats they depend on.

Did you know that millions of birds travel thousands of kilometres every year, crossing countries and continents in search of food, breeding grounds, and favourable climates? Zambia is an important stopover and home for many migratory bird species, making our wetlands, forests, and grasslands critical for their survival.

But why are migratory birds important?

✅They maintain healthy ecosystems – Migratory birds help control pests, pollinate plants, and disperse seeds.

✅They are indicators of environmental health – Healthy bird populations often mean healthy ecosystems for people and wildlife alike.

✅They connect nations – These birds remind us that conservation knows no borders; protecting them requires global cooperation.

Together, we can ensure that migratory birds continue to grace our skies for generations to come!

Global Big Day/World Migratory Bird Day Beyond Birding

This year’s World Migratory Bird Day “Every Bird Counts - Your Observations Matter!” recognizes community and citizen science projects worldwide that record bird observations to support science and policy.

Every observation tells a story about the state of our environment.
When thousands of people record birds at the same time through eBird, patterns begin to emerge. Scientists are able to track which species are increasing or declining, how migration routes are shifting, and how ecosystems are responding to climate and land-use changes.

In a world where biodiversity is under pressure, this kind of real-time, large-scale data is incredibly valuable. It helps guide conservation decisions, shape policy, and prioritise action where it is most needed.

Your observation, no matter how small it may seem, becomes part of a much bigger picture.

Would you take part knowing your sighting contributes to global conservation with BirdWatch Zambia?

Your contribution is invaluable!
