Leadership Corner: Accountability Without Blame

*“It happened on my watch” is accountability. “Let’s understand why it happened” is leadership.*

In aviation, accountability should never mean finding someone to blame. Strong leaders take ownership of outcomes while asking the harder question: *What allowed this to happen, and what can we change to prevent it from happening again?*

When people know that reporting mistakes will lead to learning rather than punishment, they are more likely to speak up, share concerns, and help improve the system.

The strongest teams aren't those that never make mistakes. *They are the teams that learn from them, improve their systems, and become safer because of them.*

Wellness Monday: Nutrition on Odd Hours

*Eating well during the day is one thing. Eating well at 3 a.m. on a night shift is a completely different skill.*

Shift work can disrupt sleep, appetite, digestion, and energy levels. For air traffic controllers, what you eat during a long shift can directly affect how alert and focused you remain.

Heavy, greasy meals and too much sugar may leave you sluggish or give you short-lived energy. Instead, aim for balanced meals and snacks with *protein, whole-grain or other slow-release carbohydrates, fruits or vegetables, and plenty of water.*

Because staying sharp on shift isn't just about rest. *It starts with how you fuel your body.*

The Birth of Air Traffic Control

*Before radar, before radios, and before digital screens, air traffic control began with two flags.*

In 1929, *Archie League* is widely recognised as one of the first people to perform what we would now call air traffic control. Working at Lambert Field in St. Louis, he stood on the ground using coloured flags to signal pilots, helping manage aircraft movements at a time when reliable cockpit radio communication was still uncommon.

From those simple signals, the profession evolved through *radio communication, radar, transponders, satellite-based surveillance, and today's increasingly digital ATM systems.*

The technology has changed dramatically. The mission has not:

*Keep aircraft safely separated, maintain an orderly flow of traffic, and support safe and efficient operations.*

Every modern control room has a little piece of aviation history behind it. And to think it started with two flags. Humanity really did look at increasingly crowded skies and decide, “Let's try waving at them.” 🚩✈️

The Shift-Work Body Clock

*Your body doesn't know it's a night shift. It only knows that its normal rhythm has been disrupted.*

For air traffic controllers, rotating shifts can challenge the body's natural circadian rhythm, affecting sleep, alertness, concentration, and decision-making.

The solution isn't simply to “push through.” **It is to manage fatigue strategically.**

Simple habits can make a real difference:

🌙 Keep your sleep schedule as consistent as possible.
🛏️ Make your sleeping environment dark, quiet, and comfortable.
☕ Limit caffeine later in your shift so it doesn't follow you into bed.
💡 Be intentional about light exposure around your sleep period.
😴 Give your body enough time to recover between shifts.

The boring habits are often the ones that work. Your body may not understand the roster, but *your safety depends on understanding your body.*

How Radar Actually “Sees” an Aircraft

Radar doesn't actually see an aircraft. It detects the signal or echo that tells us where an aircraft is.

Primary Surveillance Radar (PSR) sends radio waves into the air and detects the echoes reflected from an aircraft. This provides information about the aircraft's position, but not its identity.

Secondary Surveillance Radar (SSR) works differently. It communicates with the aircraft's transponder, which responds with information such as the aircraft's identification code and altitude.

Then came *ADS-B*, which takes surveillance a step further. Instead of waiting to be detected by radar, equipped aircraft automatically broadcast their position, altitude, identification and other information using satellite-derived positioning.

From radar echoes to aircraft broadcasting their own position, surveillance technology has transformed how controllers build the traffic picture.

Just Culture Starts With You

*Good leaders don't start by asking, “Who made the mistake?” They ask, “What allowed it to happen?”*

Just Culture is more than a policy or a poster on the wall. It is reflected in how leaders respond when someone admits an error.

Punish every honest mistake, and people learn to stay silent. Create an environment where people can speak openly, and teams are more likely to report early, learn from errors, and prevent recurrence.

In ATC, leadership is not about having all the answers. **It is about creating a culture where people feel safe enough to tell the truth before a mistake becomes an incident.**

A strong safety culture does not ignore accountability. It distinguishes between **honest human error, at-risk behaviour, and reckless behaviour** and responds appropriately.

A tired controller is not a hero. A tired controller is a safety risk.

Fatigue rarely announces itself. It can show up as a slower scan, delayed decisions, reduced concentration, or a missed call sign. In air traffic control, even small lapses can matter.

Rest is not something we earn after the work is done. It is part of doing the work safely. GATCOZ encourages every controller, assistant, and shift worker to treat rest as a safety responsibility.

Protect your recovery time, speak up when fatigue affects your fitness for duty, and remember that reporting fatigue is not a weakness. It is a professional safety action.

*Some airports never really slow down. Behind every smooth departure and arrival is a team working with precision, discipline, and trust.*

At the world’s busiest airports, aircraft can be taking off or landing every few seconds during peak periods. Managing that kind of traffic requires much more than technology. It depends on clear procedures, strong coordination, situational awareness, and controllers who are trained to perform under sustained pressure.

But whether you’re handling a few movements an hour or a continuous stream of traffic, the fundamentals remain the same: *discipline, communication, teamwork, and safety.*
