🎉 Fun Fact Friday, alphabet edition!

Alpha. Bravo. Charlie. Delta.

The ICAO phonetic alphabet wasn’t just made up randomly, it was specifically engineered so that each word sounds distinct from every other, even over poor radio quality or in noisy environments. 📻

Before the standardised alphabet, confusion was common. “B” and “P” sound similar. “M” and “N” can be misheard. “S” and “F” blur in static.

The phonetic alphabet solves all of that:
🔤 Alpha (not “Andrew”)
🔤 Lima (not “London”)
🔤 Zulu (not “Zebra”)

Fun bonus: “Zulu” is ALSO used for UTC time in aviation, so when a controller says “wheels up at 0800 Zulu,” they mean 8am in Greenwich, UK

In Zambia,this means its 2 hours behind Zambian local time. 0800 Zulu” is 10.00hrs🕗

🌍 GATCOZ Member Represents IFATCA at ICAO Global Aviation Gender Summit

The Guild of Air Traffic Control Officers of Zambia (GATCOZ) proudly celebrates one of our members, Lumbiwe Hara, who recently represented the International Federation of Air Traffic Controllers’ Associations (IFATCA) at the ICAO Global Aviation Gender Summit held in Luanda, Angola.

Lumbiwe attended the summit in her capacity as a member of IFATCA’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Task Force, the IFATCA Africa and Middle East (AFM) Women Support Group, and as one of the ICAO Global Gender Focal Points.

Held under the theme “Advancing Aviation Through the Empowerment of Women,” the summit brought together aviation leaders, regulators and industry stakeholders from around the world to explore practical strategies for advancing gender equity, strengthening workplace culture and promoting greater inclusion across the aviation sector.

We are proud to see a GATCOZ member contributing to these important global conversations and representing the profession on the international stage. Her commitment to advancing equity, mentorship and psychological safety within Air Traffic Management reflects the values of professionalism, leadership and service that continue to inspire our aviation community.

Here are a few strategies used by controllers around the world:

🏃 Physical movement: a walk, a run, the gym. Moving your body helps release what your mind is holding.

🎵 Music: put on your playlist and let the day dissolve.

🗣️ Talk it out: with a colleague, a friend, or a professional. Debrief culture isn't just for incidents.

😂 Laughter: never underestimate it. Find your funny.

🌿 Nature: step outside. Fresh air does something screens can't.

Distance: approximately 2.7 km
Flight time: as little as 57 seconds ⏱️

Yes, you read that right. Controllers and pilots have less than a minute from wheels-up to wheels-down.

For comparison, a typical Lusaka to Ndola flight takes around 40 minutes and yet the same professionalism, communication, and safety standards apply to BOTH. ✈️

That's the beauty of aviation. Whether it's 57 seconds or 17 hours, the standard never drops.

Mental wellnes Let’s talk about sleep. 😴

For Air Traffic Controllers, fatigue isn’t just uncomfortable, it’s a safety risk.

Research shows that sleep deprivation has the same effect on decision-making as being legally drunk. For a profession where decisions happen in seconds, that’s not a small thing.

ICAO and IFATCA have guidelines on fatigue management for a reason. Rest isn’t laziness, it’s professionalism.

A few small habits that help:
🌙 Protect your sleep hours like a duty commitment
📵 Reduce screen time before bed
🧘 Wind down with something calming like stretching, reading, music
☕ Watch the caffeine after your shift

🎉 Fun Fact Friday!

When a pilot says “copied” on the radio, do you know what it actually means?

“Copied” simply means “I have received your transmission.” That’s it. No agreement, no action promised, just acknowledgment. 📻

Aviation has its own language, ICAO standard phraseology. Designed to be short, clear, and impossible to misunderstand.

A few classics:
🛫 “Cleared for takeoff”= only used by controllers, never pilots
🔁 “Wilco” = will comply (not just received)
🚨 “Mayday Mayday Mayday” = international distress call, always said THREE times
🛬 “Number one” = you’re next to land
🌀 “Hold position” = stop and wait

These phrases are used identically from Lusaka to London to Los Angeles. One sky. One language. ✈️

*LEADERSHIP CORNER: LEADERSHIP IN AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL LOOKS DIFFERENT.*

There is no corner office on the operational floor and there is not always time for long deliberation.

Sometimes leadership happens in seconds, on frequency, during a busy traffic flow, when someone must remain calm, make a decision, support the team and take responsibility.

Great ATC leaders share important qualities:

✅ **Calm under pressure** because composure builds confidence.

✅ **Clear communication** because every word matters.

✅ **Situational awareness** not only of the traffic, but also of the people behind the operation.

✅ *The courage to ask for help* because recognising your limits is professional judgement, not weakness.

✅ *Creating a speak-up culture* where controllers can raise concerns, learn from mistakes, and improve safety.

✅ *Developing others* because great leaders do not simply build successful careers. They help build the next generation of controllers.

We don’t talk about this enough. 💜

Air Traffic Control is one of the most mentally demanding professions in the world. Controllers make hundreds of decisions per shift, often under time pressure, with zero margin for error.

That takes a toll.

At GATCOZ, we believe that a mentally healthy controller is a safe controller. Mental wellness isn’t a luxury,it’s an operational necessity.
