Bees, butterflies and birds pollinate three‑quarters of our food – but pesticides and habitat loss are killing them. In contrast, agroecology (diverse crops, no toxic sprays, flowering borders) lets pollinators thrive.

Here is an interesting fact for World Bee Day. Did you know that Zambia recently revised its masterplan for our ecosystems? It's called the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) III. More than a policy document, it's our national commitment to safeguarding the plants, animals, and ecosystems that our food, water, climate resilience, and cultures depend on.

This week and next, we explore how connecting NBSAP to our farming and food systems is key to its success.

Happy International Seed Day! Today we celebrate the foundation of our food, our culture, and our future. But in Zambia, that future is under threat.

Two proposed bills aim to replace our current seed laws with UPOV 91 – a system that criminalises farmers, legalises biopiracy, and hands control to a handful of corporations.

We say NO.

Tweende, together with the Regional Schools and Colleges Permaculture Programme, brought farmers, extension officers, and partners together for a powerful farmer-to-farmer learning exchange in Hanamoonga and Itebe.

From water harvesting to traditional kraaling, the real teachers were the farmers themselves.

Zambia is at a pivotal moment. The revision of our NBSAP is underway, alongside our National Agroecology Strategy and climate plans.

This is our chance for policy coherence: Zambia must implement integrated biodiversity targets by mainstreaming agroecology and sustainable, just food systems transformation.

Here’s what that requires in the NBSAP:

• Recognise agroecology as a key biodiversity-based solution
• Centre farmer-led seed systems and indigenous knowledge
• Redirect subsidies to support biodiversity-positive practices
• Promote investment across agroecological value chains
• Ensure inclusive governance where farmers co-create knowledge and policy

A strong NBSAP that embraces agroecology will secure our natural heritage, our food, and our future.
