GROWTH IS NOT ONLY ABOUT HOW MUCH ZAMBIA PRODUCES. IT IS ALSO ABOUT HOW WE PRODUCE IT, WHO PARTICIPATES AND WHO BENEFITS.
President Hakainde Hichilema's GROW Zambia Agenda sets ambitious national targets across agriculture, energy, tourism, mining and livestock. Achieving these targets will require more than government programmes. It will demand private-sector investment, innovation, responsible business practices and purposeful partnerships.
This is where CSR and ESG must become central to Zambia’s growth story.
CSR can mobilise corporate capabilities to address the practical barriers to growth—skills shortages, weak local suppliers, limited farmer productivity, inadequate community infrastructure, poor market access and insufficient opportunities for young people and women.
ESG provides the discipline needed to ensure that growth is responsible and sustainable:
Environmental: Climate resilience, responsible water and land use, clean energy, pollution prevention, biodiversity protection and mine rehabilitation.
Social: Decent employment, community participation, occupational safety, local content, human rights and inclusive value chains.
Governance: Transparency, ethical leadership, accountability, responsible investment and credible measurement of results.
The question for every organisation should no longer be simply, “What can we donate?”
It should be:
Which GROW Zambia target can our corporate capability help unlock?
Which national bottleneck can our expertise, technology, procurement or investment help solve?
How will communities and local businesses participate in—and benefit from—the resulting growth?
Growth gives Zambia the ambition. CSR mobilises partnership. ESG ensures that the journey is responsible, resilient and inclusive.
At CSR Network Zambia, we believe the real opportunity is to connect national priorities with corporate capabilities—and turn ambitious production targets into measurable improvements in livelihoods, communities and Zambia’s long-term prosperity.
