Sani Foundation The Sani Foundation provides supported education and employment to young adults with intellectual disabilities.

In present day Zambia, there are a number of myths and prejudices that exist around persons with intellectual disabilities. Cultural factors present difficulties for persons with disabilities, as families often persist in hiding their child with a disability because of negative community preconception. Like anyone else, persons with intellectual disabilities would like to take part in a range of s

ocial and vocational life experiences yet they face difficulties in doing so due to several societal barriers. However, they should not be perceived as objects of pity but rather as responsible individuals capable of contributing immensely to the development of society. The Sunshine Zambia project endeavours to profile each member’s needs, identify their aspirations, talents and skills, and beyond the training, find short term internship experience for members to have a real feel of the employment world before accessing a permanent job or setting up a business concern. The Sunshine Zambia Project is a social enterprise that empowers a largely neglected population. The project gives our members a sense of identity, responsibility and independence, aiding them to experience a real job setting while operating within an environment which is not only safe but also cultivates requisite skills for success. By purchasing our products, customers are not only obtaining quality products at competitive prices but they are also playing an enormous role in supporting the Sunshine Zambia Project’s long term plan of providing employment to persons with intellectual disabilities.

In our kitchen station, teenagers have mastered essential skills. They have learned to plan and prepare meals, selecting recipes and gathering ingredients with confidence. Cooking safely and effectively, they now use kitchen appliances and tools with ease, following recipes and understanding various cooking techniques. Cleaning up after themselves, they maintain a spotless kitchen, washing dishes, wiping surfaces, and storing leftovers properly. These skills have not only fostered their independence but also boosted their self-esteem and encouraged healthier eating habits. They are now better prepared for the future, equipped with the confidence and abilities to lead fulfilling lives

INSIDE THE WORK STATION
Welcome to the Crafts Station
It is a vibrant hub where creativity and skill-building come together in the most delightful ways. Here, the trainees embark on a journey of transformation, turning ordinary glass bottles into beautiful glasses through a scrupulous process that emphasizes both safety and creativity.
The adventure begins with breaking the bottles, a task that requires careful handling and supervision. Trainees first put on protective gear and follow strict safety protocols to ensure a safe environment. Once the bottles are broken, the cups are sanded and smoothed, sharpening their fine motor skills and instilling a sense of accomplishment as they watch the rough edges turn smooth.
But the magic doesn’t stop there! The Crafts Station is also a habour for artistic expression. Trainees create stunning pieces of art from everyday items like bottle lids. They make chains, flower pot decorations, and other beautiful decorative items, transforming the mundane into something extraordinary. This creative process is incredibly empowering, allowing them to express themselves in ways words cannot. Further sometimes, they get to sell their glasses and make money out to their hard work.
The impact of the Crafts Station on the trainees is profound. It is more than just a place to learn new skills; it is a space where they gain confidence, develop patience, and discover their potential. Each piece they create is a testament to their hard work and creativity, proving that with the right support, they can achieve remarkable things. The Crafts Station is truly a beacon of hope and empowerment, transforming lives one craft at a time.

Every Monday during our Time cycle We have Classes on child safeguarding, where they learn important topics in a hands-on and engaging way.
This is Chebo, During this class, Chebo and his peers learned about what abuse is, how to recognize it, and the importance of speaking up if they or someone they know is being mistreated. They discussed different types of abuse, and learned that it’s crucial to tell a trusted adult if something doesn’t feel right.
With this information Chebo now understands that he has the right to feel safe and respected at home, at school, and in the community. He knows how to raise concerns and report any inappropriate behavior to trusted adults or organizations dedicated to keeping children safe.
For a trainee like Chebo, having this knowledge is particularly important. It empowers him to protect himself and others, builds his confidence, and helps him become more independent. Understanding how to navigate and respond to potentially harmful situations enhances his overall well-being and integration into society.
We are incredibly proud of his progress and remain committed to fostering a safe and supportive environment for all our trainees.
