What does Zambia becoming a 24-hour economy mean?

Following Cabinet approval announced by Chief Government Spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa, businesses, markets and bus stations across Zambia will now be allowed to operate 24 hours a day instead of closing early.

In simple terms, economic activity will no longer be limited to daytime hours. Shops, transport services and markets can now run day and night, giving businesses and traders more time to operate and make money.

A 24-hour economy opens the door to more jobs, more business opportunities and increased economic activity. Businesses may introduce night shifts, transport services can run throughout the night, and traders in markets can sell goods at different times to reach more customers.

It also creates opportunities for young people and entrepreneurs who may want to start night-time businesses such as food services, transport, logistics, and convenience retail.

Expanding operating hours means more productivity and more money circulating in the economy. Instead of economic activity stopping in the evening, businesses can continue serving customers, creating income for families and increasing national economic output.

It is a progressive step toward building a more dynamic and opportunity-driven economy, where time itself becomes an asset for growth.

In short, a 24-hour economy means more opportunity, more jobs and more economic activity for the country.

We are optimistic about what will unfold because of this huge economic policy shift .

A New Door of Opportunity for Young People: The Imisepela App Launches on Youth Day

As Zambia celebrates Youth Day, a new digital tool aimed at empowering young people has been introduced — the Imisepela App.

At a time when young people are increasingly turning to technology for information, networking, and opportunity, the launch of this platform could not be more timely. The Imisepela App is designed to serve as a digital gateway for youth opportunities, bringing together information on jobs, skills development, entrepreneurship support and youth programs into one accessible space.

The Imisepela App is essentially a one-stop digital platform where young people can discover opportunities that may otherwise be difficult to find.

From employment opportunities and training programs to entrepreneurship support and youth initiatives, the app aims to ensure that young people across the country have easier access to information that can help shape their futures.

In many cases, opportunities already exist across government institutions, the private sector and development partners. However, the challenge has often been access to information. Many young people simply do not know where to look or how to find these opportunities.

The Imisepela App seeks to bridge that gap by placing those opportunities directly into the hands of young people through their smartphones.

Zambia is a young country, with a large percentage of its population falling within the youth category. While this presents enormous potential for innovation, productivity, and economic growth, it also requires deliberate efforts to ensure that young people have access to opportunities that allow them to participate meaningfully in the economy.

Platforms like the Imisepela App represent a step toward modernizing how opportunity is shared and accessed, making it easier for young people to connect with programs, skills development initiatives, and employment pathways.

The launch of the app also reflects efforts by President Hichilema’s government to explore innovative ways of supporting youth empowerment and participation in national development.

While no single initiative can fully resolve the challenges facing young people, creating platforms that improve access to opportunities is an important and practical step in the right direction.

Ultimately, the success of the Imisepela App will depend on how many young people take advantage of it.

Young people across the country are encouraged to download the app, explore the opportunities available, and make use of the resources designed to support them. Sometimes the difference between potential and progress is simply access to the right information at the right time.

The opportunity is now in your hands.

Download the “Imisepela” app, explore the possibilities, and take advantage of the opportunities available.

Happy Youth Day!
