Today, 13th May 2026, BORDA Zambia convened a Technical Working Group (TWG) inception meeting for Project WISE II at Best Western Plus Lusaka, bringing together key stakeholders to strengthen collaboration and advance sustainable and inclusive WASH interventions in schools.

Delivering the opening remarks, Mwila Angela Kapembwa, Country Director of BORDA Zambia, underscored that improving WASH in schools is not only about infrastructure delivery but also about strengthening the systems that sustain long-term impact. She emphasised the need to reinforce operations and maintenance (O&M) mechanisms within schools and highlighted knowledge management as a critical component in ensuring sustainability and continuous learning.

The meeting featured presentations outlining the project scope, with a focus on both behavioural change and infrastructure development, as well as key implementation timelines. The discussions that followed provided valuable technical insight, particularly around the school selection process, the engagement of contractors for the pilot phase, and the importance of ensuring infrastructure inclusivity for differently abled learners.

Stakeholders also stressed the importance of community participation in sustaining WASH interventions, noting that while school personnel may change over time, communities remain central to ownership, continuity, and long-term impact for learners.

The meeting reaffirmed a shared commitment among partners and stakeholders to strengthening systems, promoting inclusive WASH services in schools, and fostering sustainable impact through collaboration and collective learning under Project WISE II.

Today marked a significant step forward in strengthening behaviour change approaches within school-based WASH programming, as BORDA Zambia participated in a collaborative curriculum development meeting convened by iDE Zambia in partnership with Splash International Zambia.

In a room filled with technical expertise and shared purpose, stakeholders came together to refine and contextualise WASH behaviour change curricula designed to shape healthier, more informed school communities. Developed by iDE, these curricula are set to be implemented across Project WISE II schools in Lusaka, Kitwe/Ndolaโ€”reaching learners at a critical stage of their development.

Discussions centred on key thematic areas including operations and maintenance of WASH facilities, foundational WASH practices, and menstrual health management (MHM)โ€”with tailored modules addressing parents, boys, and peer groups. Each component reflects a growing recognition that sustainable behaviour change requires inclusive, age-appropriate, and socially responsive approaches.

Beyond technical content, the session underscored a shared commitment: that meaningful impact in WASH is achieved not only through infrastructure, but through empowering learners with knowledge, dignity, and agency.
As these curricula move towards finalisation, they hold the promise of fostering lasting behaviour changeโ€”contributing to healthier school environments and improved learning outcomes for all.

Today marked the official launch of Project WISE II (WASH in Schools for Everyone), a transformative initiative advancing a shared commitment to improving the health, dignity, and learning environments of learners.

The event convened government leadership, cooperating partners, school representatives, and learners, culminating in the signing of school cooperation agreements, underscoring that sustainable impact is built on strong partnerships, shared ownership, and long-term collaboration.

As emphasised by our Country Director, Ms. Mwila Angela Kapembwa:

โ€œThis is for every girl who deserves to manage her menstruation with dignity and not miss a single day of schoolโ€ฆ for every child who deserves clean water to drink and a safe, functional toilet to use.โ€

Her words powerfully reflect the human impact at the heart of WISE II.

Implemented by BORDA Zambia in partnership with Splash International, and in close collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation, the project will reach over 700,000 learners across more than 300 schools in Lusaka, Kitwe, and Ndolaโ€”delivering safe, inclusive, and sustainable WASH and menstrual health services.

Beyond infrastructure, Project WISE II is an investment in equity, dignity, and opportunity, ensuring that every learner has the foundation to attend school consistently, participate fully, and thrive.

Today marked an exciting and significant milestone for Lusakaโ€™s solid waste management sector, as BORDA Zambia officially handed over the Operations Guideline for Solid Waste Service Providers to the Lusaka Integrated Solid Waste Management Company (LISWMC).

This important document has been developed through a collaborative process led by BORDA Zambia, the Lusaka Integrated Solid Waste Management Company, with valuable contributions from service providers and key sector stakeholders. It reflects a shared commitment to enhancing operational standards and building a more coordinated and resilient waste management system.

The significance of this guideline cannot be overstated. It serves as a foundational framework that will guide service providers in delivering consistent, high-quality waste management services, while also promoting accountability, compliance, and transparency across the sector. By standardising operations and clarifying roles and responsibilities, the document is expected to enhance coordination among stakeholders, improve service coverage and reliability, and ultimately contribute to better public health and environmental outcomes for the city of Lusaka.

As BORDA Zambia, we are committed to advancing sustainable environmental solutions by promoting innovative, decentralised approaches to waste and sanitation management, strengthening local capacities, and improving living conditions for communities in Lusaka and beyond.

On World Water Day, we are reminded that water is more than a resourceโ€”it is a foundation for dignity, equity, and opportunity.

Access to safe water directly shapes health outcomes, educational attainment, and economic participation, particularly for women and girls who are disproportionately affected by water scarcity. When water flows reliably, time is restored, burdens are reduced, and communities are empowered to thrive.

At BORDA Zambia, we remain committed to advancing inclusive and sustainable water solutions that leave no one behind, because where water flows, equality must follow.

Today, BORDA Zambia had the privilege of participating in an inter-school debate programme, following an invitation from the Lusaka City Council, featuring Kabulonga Boys Secondary School and Kabulonga Girls Secondary School in commemoration of World Water Day.

Held under the theme โ€œWater and Gender: Increasing Water Access for Women, Men and Girls for a Sustainable Future,โ€ the programme brought together young minds to engage on one of the most pressing global challengesโ€”access to clean water. The debate, centred on the question โ€œWho is responsible for ensuring there is clean water?โ€ was both powerful and inspiring, showcasing the learnersโ€™ depth of understanding, critical thinking, and passion for sustainable development.

We commend both schools for their exceptional participation and extend congratulations to Kabulonga Boys Secondary School for emerging victorious.

Earlier today, BORDA Zambia featured alongside Mpundu Chipulu Chisunka of the Mansa Municipal Council, Moses Chansa, Chairperson of the Chilyapa Ward Development Committee (WDC), and Mr Alan Mwewa, Deputy Head Teacher of Muchinka Primary School, on Letโ€™s Talk CDF on KFM 95.5 FM, engaging listeners in a comprehensive discussion on the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) and its role in advancing sanitation within communities.

The radio dialogue provided clarity on what CDF is, the allocation framework, eligibility criteria, where community members can access information, and how to apply for sanitation projects under the fund. The panel emphasised the importance of community awareness and active participation to ensure that resources are utilised effectively and transparently.

A key highlight of the discussion was the sanitation catalogue currently being developed by BORDA Zambia. The catalogue outlines a range of context-appropriate sanitation options designed to support residents of Chilyapa Ward in making informed decisions when selecting and applying for sanitation projects through CDF.

The conversation further underscored the critical link between improved sanitation in schools and childrenโ€™s health, well-being, dignity, and educational outcomes. Safe and adequate sanitation facilities not only reduce the risk of disease but also create an enabling learning environment where every child can thrive.

Through platforms such as Letโ€™s Talk CDF, we remain committed to strengthening knowledge, promoting informed decision-making, and supporting sustainable sanitation solutions within our communities.
