THE 2024/2025 post-harvest survey (PHS) report has revealed that Zambia’s actual harvested maize last year was 3.9 million metric tons compared to the forecast 3.6 million, translating into a 5.7 percent difference.

Meanwhile, the 2025 Economic Establishment Census (EEC) report has showed that the number of business establishments operating within Zambia increased from 66,743 in 2010 to 485,034 in 2025.

Announcing the results on 24th March, Zambia Statistics Agency (ZamStats) said small and medium-scale farmers contributed the highest share of maize at 93.5 percent of the national output, with large-scale farmers at 6.5 percent.

Central Province recorded the highest tonnage at 769,800 metric tons, while Lusaka had the lowest at 155,500 metric tons.
The findings also show that the number of cattle was 4.1 million, with Southern Province leading at 1.7 million, while Luapula Province was last at 9,000.

The number of goats was 3.8 million, 747,000 for pigs and 220,400 sheep.

The wholesale and retail trade industry topped businesses operating within Zambia as it increased from 37,887 in 2010 to 300,097 in 2025.

The objective of the 2025 EEC was to create a statistical business register of active establishments and their characteristics, for statistical purposes, which will be used as a frame for economic or business surveys.

To improve agricultural productivity in the Southern African Countries there is need to build climate-resilient food systems that reduce poverty, stop land degradation, and ensure long-term food security.

Key Strategies

Water Management: Scaling up small-scale, affordable irrigation systems like solar water pumps and drip lines to decrease reliance on erratic rainfall.

Land Restoration: Rehabilitating degraded watersheds and soil health through the World Food Programme resilience initiatives and sustainable land management.

Combining Technologies: Encouraging farmers to use climate-smart systems, such as pairing drought-tolerant seeds with organic or mineral fertilizers, rather than using single tools.

Market Integration: Strengthening agricultural value chains and connecting smallholder farmers to local markets and school feeding programs.
Possibilities are limitless

A strong to potentially extreme El Niño event is taking shape in 2026, causing significant shifts in climate and agricultural conditions across Africa. The phenomenon is bringing extended droughts to Southern Africa and the Sahel, while threatening severe rainfall and flooding in Eastern. Just yesterday we learned of floods in Accra city in Ghana.

Southern Africa forecasts point to below-average rainfall, delayed rainy seasons, and prolonged dry spells for the region. This weather pattern threatens the upcoming 2026/2027 agricultural season. This dryness concerns major grain producers like South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, which are trying to offset the risks of diminished harvests and rising global food and fertilizer inflation.

AFAP Countries are seriously looking into interventions that will cushion the impact on rural smallholder farming communities in our continued effort to ensure food security and rural household economies that safeguard these vounarable house holds.
