From Commitment to Action - Learning Resilience Where It Happens

What does it take to move from commitments and policy discussions to meaningful action?

The 14th ZAWAFE provided an opportunity to explore this question beyond the forum room, through an enriching post-forum field visit to Copperbelt Province.

Held under the theme, “From Commitment to Action: Accelerating Integrated Resilience Solutions for Vision 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” the field visit offered participants an opportunity to see how integrated approaches to water, climate resilience, mining and environmental management are being translated into practice.

At the Nkana Water Supply and Sanitation Company Intake, participants explored GIZ-supported early warning systems designed to strengthen water resource monitoring, improve disaster preparedness and build climate resilience through timely data collection and informed decision-making.

The experience provided more than technical learning. It was a reminder that building resilience requires collaboration across sectors, innovation, reliable information and integrated planning.

The Copperbelt field visits demonstrated that the journey from commitment to action is not simply about having the right policiesit is about connecting knowledge, people, technology and institutions to deliver solutions that respond to real challenges on the ground.

As Zambia works towards Vision 2030 and the SDGs, experiences such as these reinforce the value of learning from implementation, sharing knowledge and strengthening partnerships for a more water-secure and resilient future.

The conversation does not end at the forum. It continues in the field, where commitments become action.

Beyond the Conversations: Reflections from the 14th ZAWAFE

We celebrate more than just three days of engagement - we celebrate a shared commitment to shaping the future of Zambia's water and sanitation sector.

As we reflect on the success of the 14th ZAWAFE, held from 9th - 11th June 2026 at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre,
Under the theme, "From Commitment to Action: Accelerating Integrated Resilience Solutions for the Sustainable Development Goals and Vision 2030," the Forum challenged all stakeholders to move beyond dialogue and embrace collective action.

One of the highlights of the Forum was the ZAWAFE panel discussion, where representatives from government, the regulator, civil society, development partners, the private sector, and participants engaged in candid conversations on some of the sector's most pressing issues.

The discussions reaffirmed that achieving Vision 2030 and SDG 6 will require sustainable financing, stronger legal and institutional frameworks, greater accountability, innovation, and partnerships. Panelists highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen financing through increased government investment, improved coordination with cooperating partners, and reforms aimed at making commercial utilities more financially sustainable while ensuring that no one is left behind.

The conversation also underscored the important role of civil society in promoting transparency and accountability through evidence-based budget tracking and advocacy. Participants emphasized that access to water and sanitation is a fundamental human right and that investments must deliberately prioritize rural communities, informal settlements, schools, health facilities, women, children, persons with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups.

Equally important were discussions on affordability and equity, with insights into how regulatory mechanisms can balance sustainable service delivery while protecting low-income households. Delegates also explored opportunities for blended finance, stronger public-private partnerships, and innovative approaches to mobilizing resources for the sector.

A powerful message emerged from the floor: commitments must translate into inclusive action. Participants called for future sector events and programmes to embed accessibility through sign language interpretation, accessible materials, and inclusive planning, ensuring that every voice is heard and every stakeholder can participate meaningfully.

The Forum concluded with clear action points, including advancing the new legal framework for the water sector, rolling out community-based WASH budget tracking tools, and strengthening accountability, transparency, and inclusivity across the sector.

The conversations may have ended, but the work continues.

As we move forward, let us carry the spirit of collaboration, innovation, and shared responsibility that defined the 14th ZAWAFE. Together, we can transform commitments into tangible actions that deliver sustainable, resilient, and equitable water and sanitation services for all.

14TH ZAWAFE highlights| Youth Voices Driving Zambia's WASH Future!

One of the standout moments of the 14th ZAWAFE was the ZAWAFE Junior Voices Competition, a youth advocacy and educational initiative that gave young Zambians a national platform to champion Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) and propose innovative, climate-resilient water solutions.

Made possible through the collaboration between ZAWAFE and Dziko Langa, the competition empowered learners from schools across Zambia to use their creativity and voices to address pressing WASH challenges affecting their communities. By inspiring youth leadership and civic participation, the initiative contributes to Zambia's Vision 2030 and Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.

Celebrating Our Winners

Congratulations to our outstanding champions:

Primary School Category: Kelvin Mtonga, a Grade 7 learner from Mapulanga Secondary School, was recognized for his exceptional contribution and inspiring advocacy.

Secondary School Category: Rodrig Mtambo from Chawama Secondary School impressed the judges with a compelling video highlighting the urgent need for universal access to clean water and sanitation. His presentation shed light on the daily challenges faced by communities such as Chawama and Kanyama, while calling for greater awareness, stronger partnerships, and collective action to improve WASH services for all.

The winners were honored during a prestigious award ceremony officiated by the Republic of Zambia's Vice President, Dr. W.K. Nalumango, alongside other distinguished government leaders. Schools demonstrating outstanding commitment to youth-led WASH advocacy were also recognized through the Best School Award.

Celebrating Excellence at the 14th Zambia Water Forum and Exhibition (ZAWAFE)!

The Dinner and Closing Awards Ceremony marked a memorable conclusion to the 14th ZAWAFE, celebrating innovation, collaboration, and excellence in the water sector.

We were honoured to have the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation, Eng. Romas Kamanga, officiate the awards ceremony and recognize outstanding exhibitors whose innovative solutions demonstrated excellence and aligned with this year's theme:

"From Commitment to Action: Integrating Resilience Solutions for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Vision 2030."

From Commitment to Action: 14th ZAWAFE Post-Forum Field Visit to the Copperbelt Province

As part of the 14th ZAWAFE, participants took part in an enriching post-forum field visit to the Copperbelt Province, providing a unique opportunity to witness integrated resilience solutions in practice and learn from some of Zambia's flagship water infrastructure and resource management initiatives.

The technical field visits included:

1. Nkana Water Intake – GIZ-Supported Early Warning Systems
Participants explored innovative early warning systems designed to strengthen water resource monitoring, improve disaster preparedness, and enhance climate resilience through timely data collection and informed decision-making.

2. Kafulafuta Dam
Delegates visited one of Zambia's strategic water infrastructure projects, gaining insight into its role in improving water security, supporting urban and industrial water supply, enhancing climate resilience, and contributing to sustainable socio-economic development in the region.

3. CNMC Luanshya Copper Mines PLC – Dewatering Operations
The visit showcased sustainable mine water management practices, highlighting how dewatering operations are being implemented to support safe mining activities while promoting environmental stewardship, responsible water use, and operational efficiency.

Held under the theme, "From Commitment to Action: Accelerating Integrated Resilience Solutions for Vision 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)," the field visit bridged the gap between policy discussions and practical implementation. Participants engaged directly with experts on the ground, exchanged knowledge, and observed innovative approaches that are strengthening resilience across the water, mining, and environmental sectors.

The field visit reinforced the importance of collaboration, innovation and integrated planning in delivering sustainable solutions that advance Zambia's Vision 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals.

The success of the 14th Zambia Water Forum and Exhibition (ZAWAFE) was greatly enriched by the outstanding contributions of our distinguished keynote speakers, who shared valuable insights, expertise, and perspectives on the future of Zambia’s water, sanitation, and environmental sectors.

Held under the theme, “From Commitment to Action: Integrating Resilience Solutions for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Vision 2030,” the forum provided a platform for thought leaders and sector experts to engage delegates on critical issues affecting water resources management, sanitation services, climate resilience, environmental sustainability, governance, financing, innovation, and partnerships.

We were privileged to hear from the ZAWAFE Chairperson - Prof. Imasiku Nyambe and Head of Secretariat - Eng. Kelvin Chitumbo (Director -NWASCO), alongside distinguished guests from Lead Cooperating Partner (CP), German Embassy Head of Corporation - Andreas Pletziger , UNICEF Zambia Deputy Representative - Mr. Tinkhani M'sonda, WWF Country Director- Mrs. Nalucha Nganga-Ziba, the NGO WASH Forum-Coordinator Mrs. Bubala Muyovwe Mumba, Finnish Ambassador - Her Excellency - Ms. Saana Halinen and the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation, Eng Romas Kamanga, among other key institutions. 14th Zambia Water Forum and Exhibition (ZAWAFE) Successfully Concluded

The 14th Zambia Water Forum and Exhibition (ZAWAFE) was successfully held from 9th–11th June 2026 at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre under the theme:

“From Commitment to Action: Integrating Resilience Solutions for Sustainable Development and Vision 2030.”

The forum was officially opened by the Vice President of the Republic of Zambia and Patron of ZAWAFE, Her Honour Dr. W.K Nalumango, who underscored the importance of translating commitments into concrete actions that strengthen resilience, enhance water security, improve sanitation services, and accelerate progress towards Zambia’s Vision 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In her keynote address, the Vice President highlighted the increasing pressures facing the water sector, including rapid urbanisation, climate change, growing demand for water resources, and environmental challenges. She called for stronger partnerships, innovation, evidence-based decision-making, and integrated approaches to water resources management and service delivery.

A significant highlight of the forum was Zambia’s growing leadership on the global water agenda as preparations continue for the 2026 UN Water Conference in Abu Dhabi, where Zambia will co-chair the Interactive Dialogue on “Water for Cooperation” alongside Finland.

Over the three-day event, delegates from government institutions, water utilities, academia, development partners, civil society, and the private sector engaged in meaningful discussions on water quality management, groundwater development, sanitation innovations, climate resilience, digital technologies, financing mechanisms, catchment protection, and sustainable water governance.

The exhibition provided a platform for showcasing innovative technologies and solutions that are shaping the future of water and sanitation service delivery, while technical field visits offered valuable opportunities for practical learning and knowledge exchange.
