"I believe trash is not a responsibility of the local authority but the person generating the waste. It only becomes the responsibility of the local authority if you pay for the service; otherwise, we are all responsible."

FOLLOWER OPINION
By Denshi Mwale Confu

"The stagnation of Zambia's Keep Zambia Clean campaign can be attributed to a prevalent tendency to assign blame to individual citizens rather than addressing systemic issues, particularly those within the purview of local authorities, such as the council. A key factor contributing to this issue is the inadequacy of waste disposal infrastructure.

The lack of sufficient trash bins in public spaces, such as across Lusaka, exacerbates the problem, as individuals are left without appropriate means to dispose of waste responsibly. For instance, pedestrians consuming food and beverages are unlikely to carry trash with them for extended periods, highlighting the need for accessible disposal options.

To effect meaningful change, it is imperative that local authorities prioritize the provision of adequate waste management infrastructure, including the strategic placement of trash bins in high-traffic areas. By addressing these systemic shortcomings, Zambia can create an environment that supports and encourages citizens to adopt responsible waste disposal practices, ultimately contributing to the success of the Keep Zambia Clean campaign.
Public awareness campaigns can also play a crucial role in educating citizens about proper waste disposal practices, the importance of recycling, and the impact of littering on the environment. Enhanced waste collection services, particularly in densely populated areas, can prevent waste accumulation and reduce the likelihood of littering. By adopting a multi-faceted approach, Lusaka can make significant strides in maintaining a clean and healthy environment for its residents."

Musonda C Emmanuel, one of our members, shared the state of affairs of uncollected trash in George Compound. Clearly, this is unacceptable by any standard. Collectively, we must find a solution to this huge problem. Here at The Zambia I Want, we have begun tackling this problem through the No Trash Campaign, a mindset change and responsible citizenship movement where we are targeting awareness and education against habits of littering and wanton waste disposal. Join our cause today and let us work towards clearing trash across our towns and cities in the next two years.
We can.

Sweden has gotten very good at handling its trash. Their recycling centers and waste-to-energy plants work so well that they often need more material than Swedes produce. To keep these plants running and to make full use of their systems, Sweden now brings in waste from other countries. This sounds strange at first, but it helps keep the machines and workers busy and the energy flowing.

The imported trash is mostly burned in special plants that also make heat and electricity for homes and businesses. This way, waste becomes useful instead of sitting in landfills. The country recovers materials that can be reused and reduces the amount of garbage that would otherwise cause pollution. The system creates jobs and helps keep neighborhoods warm in winter, showing a practical side of recycling and energy use.

Still, this idea has two sides. Bringing in waste from far away can mean more transport and emissions, and it doesn’t replace the need for less trash overall. While Sweden’s model shows how to use waste better, it also reminds other countries to focus on cutting waste at the source, reusing things, and recycling more locally when possible.

One piece becomes a pile.

Piles of trash don’t appear overnight.
They start with one bottle. One wrapper. One careless moment.

Every time you choose to throw litter on the ground instead of into a bin, you’re not just dropping waste β€” you’re creating a future dumping site.

Ask yourself:
Is this where I want my children to play?
Is this the Zambia I want to live in?

The truth is simple. If you can carry it full, you can carry it empty. If there’s no bin nearby, keep it in your car or bag until you find one.

Clean streets start with personal responsibility.
No excuses. No shortcuts.

No Trash. No Excuse.
A clean Zambia starts with you. πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡²

One of our team members, Christabell Phiri, took time to expose the levels of littering and trash at Mutanda Bantu market in Kanyama. Dear Zambians, how can we accept living near dirt and find this normal? Depending on local authorities to clear this without educating citizens in proper water disposal is taking two steps front and three backwards.

That is why we are running the No Trash Campaign, to effect mindset changes around waste. Join us today.
