From Grassroots Activism to the National Assembly

Activista Zambia congratulates Cde Harry Simuntala on his election as a Member of Parliament under the Youth Proportional Representation system.

For us, this is a particularly significant moment because Harry’s journey is deeply connected to the story of Activista Zambia. He served the movement diligently from the grassroots in Nakonde, rose to national leadership, and played a key role during Activista Zambia’s transition into an autonomous youth-led social movement. Even after his active leadership service, he continued to provide guidance and support to the movement as an Honorary Member.

Seeing a long-serving Activista move from grassroots organising and movement leadership into national public service is a moment we recognise with pride. It is also a reminder of the importance of creating pathways through which young people can participate meaningfully at every level of Zambia’s democracy.

As you take on this new responsibility, Cde Harry, we celebrate your years of service to the movement and wish you well in your contribution to youth representation and public service.

Congratulations, Hon. Harry Simuntala, MP.

With pride,
Activista Zambia

From Activism to Civic Leadership.

Activista Zambia congratulates Cde Emmanuel Muke on his official nomination to serve as a Councillor under Kalumbila Town Council.

His nomination comes at an important moment in Zambia’s democratic development, following the introduction of the Mixed-Member Proportional Representation system under the Constitution of Zambia (Amendment) Act No. 13 of 2025. The reform provides for proportional-representation seats at council level, broadening opportunities for the representation of young people, women and persons with disabilities in local governance.

For Activista Zambia, this moment also speaks to the importance of creating pathways through which young people who have served their communities, organised at grassroots level and participated in civic spaces can take on greater responsibilities in public life.

Cde Emmanuel has served within Activista Zambia, including as Kalumbila Chapter Commissioner, contributing to youth mobilisation, advocacy, social accountability and community engagement.
As he takes this next step into civic leadership, we recognise the responsibility that comes with public service and the expectation to remain connected to the people and communities he will serve.
Congratulations, Cde Emmanuel Muke.

With pride,
Activista Zambia

What if the climate crisis and the debt crisis are not two separate problems?
For many countries in the Global South, debt repayments place enormous pressure on public finances. At the same time, communities are dealing with floods, droughts, food insecurity, water shortages and other climate impacts.
When scarce public resources are directed toward servicing debt, governments can face difficult choices about what remains available for climate adaptation, public services and a just transition.
And there is another layer: fossil fuel extraction and the financial systems that support it continue to shape the climate crisis.
So we need to ask:
Who gets to borrow?
Who gets to profit?
Who gets protected?
And who gets left paying the bill?
Climate justice must include a serious conversation about debt, finance and power.
The debt trap is a climate trap.

Violence has no place in our elections!

Today, Activista Chipata and Chapters, in partnership with ActionAid, take the message of peaceful political participation to the people of Chipata and Solwezi through the Violent Free Election Roadshows.

As Zambia heads towards the elections, we are calling on citizens, political actors and young people to choose dialogue over violence, respect over intimidation, and peace over division.

One Zambia. One Nation. One peaceful election.
