HAPPY AFRICAN FREEDOM DAY
Moses Luneta: Chavuma's Symbol of Colonial Resistance

Opposite the district administration and council offices in Chavuma district lies a National Monument that reminds everyone about the independence struggle.

It is here that the remains of Moses Luneta alongside 7 other men are buried, a reminder of what Zambia was 60 plus years ago.

Moses Luneta was a fearless freedom fighter of Chavuma, whose life he sacrificed in place of Zambia's self-rule.

Born in 1930, Luneta lived a life of sacrifice, joining forces with other like minded Pan Africanists, in fighting the British rule, which unfortunately cost his life in 1961, 3 years before Zambia got independence.

Together with others, Luneta led the resistance to British rule in North Western, making him a target of the colonial masters.

His aggressiveness towards colonialism resulted in his arrest during one of his operations in the west bank of Chavuma.

After his arrest, he was supposed to be escorted back to the east and he was accompanied by 7 police men who had travelled from Kitwe at the command of colonial masters.

Unfortunately, as they crossed the Zambezi River, the boat capsized, drowning all on board.

The 8 bodies were later retrieved and buried just 300 meters away from where they had died from.

Today, the graves of the 8 symbolize the sacrifice that came with the freedom we are enjoying today.

In honor of his unwavering dedication to African freedom, a School, Moses Luneta Secondary School, is named after him.
