Barrick Gold, owners of Lumwana Mine in Zambia, to Pay Mali $440million

Canada's Barrick Gold has reached an agreement with the Malian government to resolve a dispute over its Loulo-Gounkoto mining complex.

The dispute began in 2023 after Mali introduced a new mining code that increased the state's financial stake in mining projects.

The revised framework required foreign mining companies to cede a greater share of revenue to the government.

In 2024, Mali's military president, Assim Goita, seized $245 million worth of gold from Barrick Gold and detained some employees due to unpaid taxes.

The military government demanded at least $512 million, but Barrick Gold has finally agreed to pay $438 million.

Zambia's renowned Economist Dr Lubinda Habazoka unpacks the dilemma in Zambia's Mining sector.

As Zambian Youths for Economic Forum we do share with many of the views and support his advocacy for the serious agent need of transforming the mining sector in Zambia πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡².

95% of mining in Zambia is controlled by Foreigners, this imbalance must be corrected with immediate effect if Zambians are to genuinely benefit from the minerals in our land.

To achieve Economic Emancipation in our life time as the citizens of Zambia we must take keen interest in our minerals and ensure that through the government which is a creation of the Zambian people, we the citizens benefit first before anyone else.

SUSPENSION OF EXPORT DUTY ON PRECIOUS STONES ANS METALS. (From 15% to 0).

We shall never achieve Economic Emancipation in our lifetime as Zambian's, if we continue with these kinds of policies.

We need to seriously revolutionize our thinking as Citizens of this Country, we must grow a relationship with our natural resources only them shall we develop an attitude of economic growth and value around these worth billions of dollars precious stones and metals in our land by ourselves.

The revelation by the New-President of Botswana reveals once again the dilemma in which African countries have found themselves in as far as benefiting from their own natural resources is concerned.

Botswana over the years has been presented in arguments of owning up to 50% shares in the Gold mine, but in this video clip the new President says the the government of Botswana only owns 15% of the shares in the Gold mine.

Fellow youths, as we journey through and aim to positively contribute to our nations on the African continent, among the things we should seek to change soon and very soon, is how business around our natural resources is concerned.

The case of Zambia, as Zambian Youths for Economic Forum ( ZAYEF) we hold a view that both Mopani and KCM should be πŸ’― owned by the Zambian people through the state. This does not mean that we do not want the private sector as many would want to confuse the masses.

All we are saying is that, along side various private players which are predominantly foreign, the Zambian people through the state must have πŸ’― state owned mines equally operating. We can not continue the path of shareholding only, we have had shares for many years now but nothing tangible has come out of it.

As ZAYEF, we wish to remind our fellow youths in our country that as we approach 2026, among the most important matters to consider how do we handle our Gold, Sugilite , Copper moving forward.

These matters need to be cleared and any leader or group of leaders seeking office in our land must be put to task and answer as to what plans they have with our vast natural resources which for a very long time have benefited foreign Private Companies at the expense of the Zambian people.

As ZAYEF, we shall continue to promote Zambia's hope for economic freedom and prosperity.

Have a blessed morning to you all.
