Government Deploys Staff to Luangwa Skills Training Centre

LUANGWA – The Luangwa Skills Training Centre has moved a step closer to full operation after the Government of Zambia deployed staff ahead of the recruitment of its first intake of students.

The milestone follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Sport, Youth and Arts, ChildFund and the Luangwa Child Development Agency (LCDA), aimed at ensuring the Centre's long-term sustainability after its official handover to Government.

Permanent Secretary Kangwa Chileshe announced that Government had already assigned personnel to the Centre, clearing the way for vocational and technical training programmes to begin.

Constructed at an investment of approximately ZMW 9.7 million, with support from ChildFund New Zealand, the Government of New Zealand, the Government of Zambia and other partners, the Centre features modern classrooms, practical workshops, student accommodation, solar-powered water systems and sanitation facilities.

Once operational, the Centre will equip young people in Luangwa District with practical skills, creating opportunities for employment, entrepreneurship and self-reliance. The initiative is expected to contribute significantly to youth empowerment and the district's long-term social and economic development.

Empowering Teachers Through Digital Learning! 📚📱🌍

The Ministry of Education – Luangwa District Education Board, in partnership with Luangwa Child Development Agency (LCDA), successfully conducted a pilot iLearnabout (iLa) training for 32 teachers and school leaders from Kaunga A Primary School, Chimutengo Primary School, and Luangwa Primary School.

iLearnabout (iLa) is a free conservation and environmental education platform designed to support both teachers and learners. The resource can be installed on mobile phones and tablets, making it easy to integrate into classroom lessons and school clubs.

Each topic pack includes:
✅ Teacher notes
✅ Learning modules
✅ Practical challenges
✅ Topic assessments

The flexible design allows teachers to use topics in any order, while the information section provides guidance on downloading and using the learning materials.

Participants expressed their appreciation for the training, noting that iLearnabout will enhance teaching and learning by providing easy access to interactive, engaging, and modern educational resources. The initiative is expected to strengthen digital learning while promoting environmental conservation among learners.

Luangwa Child Development Agency | Empowering Youth Through Skills for Sustainable Livelihoods

A historic milestone for Luangwa District!

ChildFund has officially handed over and commissioned the district’s first-ever Skills Training Centre, a transformative investment in youth development made possible through the generous support of ChildFund New Zealand and the Government of New Zealand.

Built at a cost of approximately ZMW 9.7 million (USD 350,000), the centre is equipped with modern classrooms, practical workshops, hostel accommodation for 64 learners, solar-powered water systems, sanitation facilities, electricity, and staff housing.

The facility will provide vocational, entrepreneurship, and life skills training, empowering young people with the skills they need to secure employment, start businesses, and build sustainable livelihoods. The first intake of students is expected within the next month.

This achievement is a testament to the power of collaboration between the Government of Zambia, ChildFund New Zealand, the Government of New Zealand, Luangwa Child Development Agency, local leaders, contractors, and the Luangwa community.

Together, we are creating opportunities, empowering youth, and building a brighter future for generations to come.

Luangwa Child Development Agency Joins Nyimba District in Commemorating the Day of the African Child.

On 16 June 2026, Luangwa Child Development Agency (LCDA) working with ChildFund Zambia, joined the Nyimba District Child Protection Committee and other stakeholders in commemorating the Day of the African Child under the theme: "Ensuring Universal Access to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene for Every Child in Africa."

The event brought together over 800 children, teachers, parents, government officials, and community members to promote the importance of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH). Learners took part in a march-past, poetry, and traditional dances, encouraging safe hygiene practices and the prevention of waterborne diseases.

During the event, LCDA distributed T-shirts and shared progress on its US$74,000 (approximately ZMW 1.33 million) water project supported by ChildFund in partnership with Davis and Shirtliff in Holfmyre Amosi Village, now 98% complete, which will provide safe water to more than 1,100 households. The organization also highlighted its successful water supply interventions at Mchimazi Clinic, Mchimazi School, and the surrounding community.

Together, we are creating healthier communities by ensuring every child has access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene.
