ZRDC HOSTS NATIONAL BIOSAFETY AUTHORITY IN LANDMARK ENGAGEMENT ON RESPONSIBLE RESEARCH

The Zambia Research and Development Centre (ZRDC) hosted representatives from the National Biosafety Authority (NBA) in an engagement focused on promoting responsible research and strengthening understanding of biosafety regulations.

The session highlighted the importance of research and innovation in driving national development while ensuring compliance with biosafety standards and best practices. NBA officials provided insights into their mandate under the Biosafety Act, including the regulation of GMO-related products and the promotion of safe and sustainable biotechnology practices in Zambia.

ZRDC Programs Manager Mr. Knox Kasongo welcomed the engagement and emphasized the importance of responsible, evidence-based research in addressing challenges in health, agriculture, environment, and industry.

Closing the session, ZRDC Public Relations Officer Ms. Memory Mwango thanked the NBA delegation for the informative presentation and expressed hope for continued collaboration with the wider research and innovation community.

ZRDC remains committed to strengthening partnerships that support responsible science, innovation, and national development.

ZRDC SUCCESSFULLY CONCLUDES INNOVATION DAY 2026

The Zambia Research and Development Centre (ZRDC) has successfully concluded the second and final day of the Innovation Day 2026, held under the theme “Innovation 360.” The event brought together students, researchers, innovators, entrepreneurs, and stakeholders to showcase innovative solutions to real-world challenges.

The final day of the event began with remarks from ZRDC representative Mr. Castrol Lisole, who emphasized the importance of innovation in driving sustainable development and creating practical solutions through research and technology.

Mr. Lisole stated that Innovation 360 continues to provide an important platform for young innovators to showcase their talents, exchange ideas, and collaborate across different fields.

On the first day of the event, 19 projects were presented, from which 10 projects advanced to the next stage of the competition. On the second and final day, 12 projects were showcased, with 7 projects progressing after impressing the judges with their creativity and potential impact.

Participants whose projects did not qualify for the next stage were encouraged to continue refining and improving their innovations through further research and development.

ZRDC also expressed appreciation to all exhibitors, judges, speakers, and stakeholders for their contribution towards the successful hosting of the Innovation Day 2026.

ZRDC HAS LAUNCHED ITS INNOVATION DAY 2026, UNDER THE THEME "INNOVATION 360."

The event was officially opened by the Guest of Honour, Prof. Serah Mbetwa, Vice Chancellor of the Information and Communications University (ICU), who delivered a message reminding innovators that innovation is not confined to laboratories or classrooms, it begins with curiosity, grows through collaboration and becomes impactful when it addresses real-world challenges.

In her address, Prof. Mbetwa challenged innovators to dream boldly, experiment fearlessly, and innovate responsibly, affirming that the ideas being developed today may become the technologies and opportunities that shape Zambia's tomorrow.

The Programs Manager, Mr. Knox Shamineke Kasongo also shared an inspiring message, highlighting ZRDC's growing footprint in supporting local innovators from its membership in the GSTIC platform, participation in the 11th Multinational Forum held in the United States, its collaboration with ICU on Artisanal Mining Classes and its involvement with the National Science Centre. He also previewed the upcoming IMDC 2026 platform as a key stage for Zambian researchers and innovators.

The event featured outstanding exhibitions, prototypes, research projects, and entrepreneurial ideas developed by talented students and innovators, a true celebration of creativity, resilience, and the transformative power of ideas.

ZRDC Drives Global Push for Innovation Action at the STI Forum at the United Nations Headquarters, New York.

The Zambia Research and Development Centre (ZRDC), in partnership with VITO and JITRI, is at the forefront of advancing global efforts to turn innovation into real impact. This comes as key stakeholders convene for the G-STIC 3.0 side event held alongside the STI Forum at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, focusing on strengthening science, technology and innovation systems to accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Discussions will focus on closing the gap between innovation and implementation. ZRDC emphasizes that while many solutions exist, progress depends on strong policy frameworks, sustainable financing, and effective collaboration. The Centre is highlighting its commitment to ensuring that research and innovation in Zambia move beyond theory and are translated into practical solutions that directly benefit society.

Through this global platform, ZRDC continues to position itself as a key driver of change, advocating for actionable pathways and stronger international cooperation.
