WHAT OUR RECENT SURVEY INTO CAREER GUIDANCE REVEALS

Our survey of 108 Zambian university students in tech-related programmes has revealed a clear and consistent challenge: secondary schools are not providing enough targeted career guidance to help young people confidently choose and prepare for tech careers. Nearly 70% received very little or no specific information about tech jobs, more than half only understood the range of careers after secondary school or still feel unclear, and almost 90% felt only moderately, slightly, or not prepared for university-level tech studies.

The primary purpose of the survey was to assess the extent to which secondary schools in Zambia are equipping students with the guidance they need to make informed decisions about careers in ICT and related fields.

By gathering evidence from students who have already navigated this transition, the study was able to bring to light certain patterns in career guidance or lack of them and it has provided a foundation for evidence-based recommendations.

The survey was able to: document the levels and quality of tech career guidance that students received during secondary school; understand when and how students first gained clarity about tech career options; assess how school provisions and school type relate to guidance outcomes; examine the broader influences on students' decisions to study tech; and understand the confidence and preparation levels students brought into university.

The report will be available to the public at the beginning of the next quarter in April.
