Livingstone Lions

Livingstone Lions Livingstone Lions is a non-profit African lion-sanctuary charity run entirely by volunteers. To do this, we need your help to support these lions.

In 2020, Livingstone Lions was formed as an emergency response to the negative impact the COVID-19 had on 42 captive lions based in Livingstone, Zambia. These lions were part of a conservation reintroduction programme (ALERT). Revenue from volunteering and tourists were key to looking after these magnificent lions. However, as Livingstone was hit hard by COVID-19 the tourist industry disappeared a

nd ALERT's Livingstone project became financially unviable. Livingstone Lions has been formed to take over the care of these captive lions, ensuring their long-term health, safety and quality of life. We are not ALERT, but as an animal welfare organization we care about these lions and the communities who live alongside them deeply. Everything we raise goes directly to the care and protection of these lions. www.livingstonelions.com

Emergency Appeal: Help Us Recover from the Anthrax Outbreak

As you know, our lovely lions faced an unexpected and devastating challenge when an anthrax outbreak claimed the lives of Nkoya, Zulu, and Kovu.

Thanks to the incredible efforts of our team and the swift response of a vet flown across Zambia, we were able to save the remaining lions and ensure all our staff received urgent medical care. They are all doing well :)

However, these emergency measures have come at a significant cost. The veterinary care, antibiotics, and hospital treatment for both lions and staff have amounted to around $3,000. This is an unplanned expense that has stretched our small charity to its limits.

We’re reaching out to our wonderful supporters to ask, if you’re able, please consider making a donation — no matter how small — to help us to cover these medical and veterinary bills. We know some of you have already kindly donated. That money is going on covering these costs. I will privately top up whatever we raise to the full amount.

The link for donations is here:

Alternatively, use:

Where you have the opportunity to add a message to your donation, can you make it clear that this is for vet bills. This means we know exactly what the money's intended for.

Thank you for standing with us through this incredibly difficult time. It has been challenging!

It’s been just over a week since we shared the heartbreaking news about the anthrax outbreak at Dambwa, and we wanted to update you all on how things are progressing with the lions.

First and foremost, our staff are doing well. Everyone on the ground has received medical attention and completed a course of antibiotics. Thankfully, none are showing symptoms, and spirits are slowly beginning to lift.

We’re also very relieved to report that no additional lions have shown signs of illness. It seems that the quick response from the vet and our dedicated team on the ground, helped prevent further losses.

Madoda and Nacha, both of whom were showing symptoms last week, are recovering well. They’re up, alert, and eating with good appetites again.

Toka is also on the mend, though his recovery has been a little slower (likely due to his age, but also he probably ate a lot of hippo!). He’s up and about and eating, though not as much as we’d like, so the vet has given him an additional dose of antibiotics and pain relief and he’s being closely monitored.

We continue to keep a very close eye on all of the lions and are in regular contact with veterinary and wildlife health authorities.

For awareness, the Zambian Government has now officially designated Livingstone as an anthrax-affected area and temporarily halted livestock movements to contain the outbreak. This measure helps protect both wildlife and communities in the region.

We’ll keep you informed of any further developments, but for now, we’re cautiously optimistic that the worst has passed.

From all of us at Livingstone Lions, thank you for your incredible kindness, messages, and ongoing support through what has been one of the toughest weeks we’ve ever faced. It truly means the world. 🧡

It is with a heavy heart that I share some devastating news from Dambwa.

Last week, the local wildlife authority (DNPW) donated a hippo carcass for our lions. Unbeknownst to anyone at the time, the animal had died from anthrax poisoning. The guys on the ground didn’t know this, and neither did DNPW. Hence, it was cut up and fed to all of our lions. Meat is difficult to source, so the team were grateful for the hippo. However, the next day, some of the lions began showing swollen mouths and refused food, a classic sign of anthrax poisoning.

Fearing the worst, we acted immediately. The nearest DNPW vet was several hours away by road, so we flew him across Zambia to administer emergency antibiotic treatment to every lion. This flight has been privately funded. Despite these efforts, we are deeply saddened to confirm that Nkoya, Zulu, and Kovu have passed away due to anthrax poisoning. Their sponsors have been informed. I am, however, very relieved to tell you that the rest of the lions are responding well to the course of antibiotics and are on the road to recovery, which is truly remarkable. They will continue to receive medication for several days and be closely monitored.

The site is currently under quarantine whilst we work with the vets, DNPW and the relevant health and safety authorities to decontaminate the area. Clearly, there is an anthrax outbreak in the wildlife population (hence the dead hippo), which DNPW are now aware of.

Our staff, who have shown extraordinary courage, love, and commitment in caring for the lions through this crisis, are also receiving medical attention as a precaution. We are working closely with veterinary and public health authorities to ensure the safety of everyone.

This has been the worst few days of our lives here at Livingstone Lions. It has been a horrific shock and an unimaginable loss for all of us. These lions were part of our family, and their absence will be profoundly felt.

We know you will share in our grief and possibly some anger. I don’t have enough words of praise and gratitude for the incredible work done by Kennedy and his team to manage this situation on the ground. They are processing some of the hardest days of their working lives and continue to care for the remaining lions with extraordinary dedication.

We are heartbroken. Lessons will have been learned from this tragedy, which will ultimately safeguard wildlife, and our precious lions, in the future.

I am deeply sorry to be the one to give you this news.

RIP Zulu, Nkoya and Kovu. They are very much loved and will be very much missed by us all 💔

The latest Red List assessment of lions (2025) reveals they remain Vulnerable (VU), with a suspected 34% decline in range over the last 21 years. The Northern Lion (Panthera leo leo) is classified as Endangered (EN) due to a 66% decline in its range over the last 21 years across West and Central Africa. The Southern Lion (Panthera leo melanochaita), found across East and Southern Africa, is also classified as Vulnerable (VU), based on a suspected 33% reduction in its range over the last 21 years:

Established in 1964, the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species has evolved to become the world’s most comprehensive information source on the global conservation status of animal, fungi and plant species.

UPDATE: Our website is fixed! Hurrah! Thank you to the fabulous Paul who gets us up and running on the technical front. Sponsorships should be working as usual. Please let me know if there are any issues. I'm waiting for the developer to provide a date/time for switching us over to the new website, but until then, all should be well (touch wood!) with our current one.

A quick message to all our wonderful sponsors: our website is currently throwing a tantrum as we transition to a new one, and consequently has not been able to process sponsorship payments for a couple of months (aarrgghhhh!). We will be emailing you over the next couple of days to check that you're still happy to sponsor your lion. We'll be transitioning across to a new website. The lions rely on your sponsorship, so we're working as quickly as we can to fix this. Sorry for the technical issue (again!) 🦁❤️###
