Kabayo Muhau Champions Electric Mobility at Solar & Storage Live Africa 2025/ EV & Charge Live Africa 2025
Johannesburg, South Africa – March 27, 2025 – Kabayo Muhau, Co-Founder & President of the Zambian Electric Mobility Innovation Alliance - ZEMIA, played a leading role in two high-level panel discussions at EV & Charge Live Africa 2025, a flagship event held at the Johannesburg Expo Centre (Nasrec) from 25–27 March 2025. The event brought together more than 650 top-tier brands and experts to showcase the latest in electric mobility, charging infrastructure, and clean energy solutions.
On 26 March, Mr. Muhau joined fellow panelists in a dynamic session on “Challenges and Opportunities for Developing Infrastructure for EV Micro-Mobility”, moderated by Vuyi Majola of CityCon. Drawing on Zambia’s experience and regional trends, Mr. Muhau emphasized:
- The urgency of bridging the electricity access and reliability gap for micro-mobility,
- The “chicken-and-egg” conundrum of vehicle adoption vs. infrastructure investment,
- The need for integrated planning, local manufacturing, and renewable-powered mobility hubs.
He highlighted Zambia’s growing momentum, referencing public-private partnerships, localized vehicle solutions, and policy innovations such as duty exemptions for electric taxis.
On 27 March, he participated in a compelling panel discussion on “Renewable-Powered Public Transportation: Opportunities to Electrify Buses and Taxis Using Renewable Energy”, alongside senior leaders from Kenya Power, Business Unity South Africa, City Power, and the Green Energy and Sustainability Association. Moderated by Dr Rod Crompton (Wits University), the discussion covered:
- The role of smart grids and decentralized solar in powering electric transit,
- Benefits of transitioning public fleets to renewables, including cost savings, pollution reduction, and energy independence,
- Regional best practices from Morocco, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Kenya,
- Financing mechanisms such as blended finance, green bonds, and carbon credits.
Mr. Muhau underscored the importance of inclusive, localized, and multi-sectoral approaches to urban mobility electrification, noting that Africa has the potential to leapfrog carbon-intensive transport models and become a global leader in sustainable mobility.
“Electrifying Africa’s transport sector is not just a climate imperative; it’s an economic and social opportunity. We must prioritize local innovation, renewable energy, and infrastructure that serves both people and the planet,” said Kabayo Muhau.
ZEMIA continues to support e-mobility ecosystem growth across Zambia and Africa through policy advocacy, industry partnerships, innovation support, and capacity building.
